Chapter 12: Chapter 12: The Forest Tyrant, First Battle Against the Mutation
Upon returning to the Pokémon world, the towering primeval forest of the previous world faded, replaced by a landscape of low shrubbery.
Realizing he was back in the Pokémon world, Su Yi allowed himself to relax a little—at least he no longer had to worry about a monster suddenly lunging at him from around the corner and swallowing him whole.
"Come on out, Rucao, Chansey."
"A new adventure in another world begins, meow!" The feline Pokémon bounced around excitedly.
"Chansey~" Seeing the familiar scenery, Chansey reminisced about the past while also marveling at the incredible journey of the past few days.
Su Yi crouched down, looked Chansey in the eyes, and solemnly invited, "Chansey, come adventure with me."
"Chansey!" Chansey responded with a warm smile.
At first, it had followed Su Yi to the Monster Hunter world out of concern for his injuries and at his request. But in just a few days, it had discovered a new love—traveling.
Evidently, Chansey enjoyed the thrill of exploring different places, seeing new sights, and tasting local delicacies.
Su Yi, on the other hand, greatly valued Chansey's healing abilities. How could such a kind and caring Pokémon ever be called a pink demon?
Just then, a small group of Pokémon gathered around, chirping and chattering as they cried out to Chansey.
Su Yi took a closer look and found that all of them were injured Pokémon.
Recalling how he first met Chansey while it was tending to a group of injured Pokémon, Su Yi couldn't help but wonder, Do Pokémon really get hurt that easily in the wild?
As Chansey treated the wounded, it explained something with a worried expression.
Su Yi scratched his head. I have no idea what it's saying…
Rucao tilted its head while listening, then translated, "Chansey is saying that there's a violent Pokémon in the forest attacking the weak and stealing food, meow."
Su Yi was surprised. "Rucao, you can understand what Chansey is saying?"
Rucao flicked its ear with a paw and hesitantly replied, "I don't fully understand every word, meow, but I get the general idea."
Thinking about it, Su Yi found it reasonable. Rucao was now a Pokémon, and basic communication between Pokémon should be natural.
Watching Chansey tirelessly tend to the wounded, Su Yi realized that as long as Pokémon continued to be harmed, the kind-hearted Chansey wouldn't be at ease leaving for an adventure with him.
That settled it.
"Chansey, let's go deal with this troublemaker."
Chansey hesitated, looking a little worried.
Su Yi gently patted Chansey's head and reassured it, "You've helped me so much. Now that you're in trouble, of course, I won't just stand by and watch."
Following the forest path, a river flowed through the woods, where Magikarp occasionally leaped from the water. A few Drampa floated lazily on the river's surface, their wise eyes surveying the land.
"There are so many creatures I haven't seen before, meow. Are these all Pokémon?" Rucao curiously scanned the area, its ears perked up.
"That's right. This is a world where most Pokémon and humans coexist peacefully." Seeing all the Pokémon around, Su Yi couldn't help but feel excitement bubbling up inside him.
"Chansey." Chansey stopped and pointed ahead.
Amidst a grove of berry-laden bushes, a Scolipede stood, surveying its territory with an air of dominance.
"A Scolipede, huh? A Bug and Poison-type Pokémon."
Despite being called a centipede, Scolipede had four strong legs instead of a hundred tiny ones. Unlike a true centipede that stayed low to the ground, Scolipede held its head high, resembling an ancient arthropod more than a typical centipede.
"This Scolipede is huge! Are you a 'gold crown' as well?" Su Yi muttered in amazement.
The towering Scolipede stood at an impressive 2.8 meters tall and stretched nearly five or six meters long. That size alone would qualify it as a large monster in the Monster Hunter world.
"Since it's a Bug and Poison-type, you're the perfect choice! Go, Yian Kut-Ku! This will be your first real battle!" Su Yi called out his dragon-bird hybrid Pokémon.
"Waah?" Yian Kut-Ku warily glanced around upon materializing.
"Listen, can you follow my commands in battle?" Su Yi gently stroked its beak to calm it down.
"Squawk!" Yian Kut-Ku responded, though it was unclear if it actually understood.
The moment Yian Kut-Ku appeared, Scolipede's attention locked onto it. Although the bird Pokémon appeared slender compared to Scolipede, its impressive nine-meter length couldn't be ignored.
"Gu-gah!" Scolipede turned, lowering its massive horns toward Yian Kut-Ku, sensing an intruder and responding with territorial aggression.
"Gu-gah!" Scolipede charged forward, its horns glowing ominously.
"Yian Kut-Ku, dodge it!"
Squawk! The agile bird leapt nimbly to the side, easily evading the attack.
"Now, use Hardened Stone Strike!" Su Yi commanded.
However, Yian Kut-Ku didn't listen. Instead, it instinctively extended its long neck to peck at Scolipede's exposed flank.
"Gu-gah!" Scolipede reacted swiftly, swinging its twin tail stingers, now glowing a toxic purple—Poison Tail!
"That's Poison Tail!" Su Yi recognized the move immediately.
Yian Kut-Ku, caught off guard by its own reckless attack, took a direct hit to the head. It stumbled back, squawking in frustration.
"Good, no poison effect," Su Yi sighed in relief, seeing no signs of status ailments.
"Yian Kut-Ku! You need to listen to me! Pokémon battles are different from the fights you're used to!" Su Yi shouted.
"Squawk!" Yian Kut-Ku cawed in response, shaking off its irritation.
"Gu-gah!" Scolipede let out a piercing screech, sending a sharp wave of energy that lowered Yian Kut-Ku's defenses.
"Great, it knows Screech too? I can't underestimate this Pokémon, especially one this strong…" Su Yi tensed, realizing the battle wouldn't be as easy as he'd initially thought.
Neither he nor Yian Kut-Ku had experience in Pokémon battles. This was turning out to be far more challenging than expected.
"If we lack strategy and experience, then we'll just rely on brute force! Yian Kut-Ku, Hardened Stone Strike!" Su Yi shook off unnecessary thoughts and focused.
"Squawk!" Yian Kut-Ku responded, its talons scraping the ground. Yellow energy surged into its claws, forming a solid energy-infused stone.
Leaping high into the air, Yian Kut-Ku prepared to smash Scolipede with the hardened stone, but Scolipede swiftly dodged.
"So fast! Could this be its hidden ability—Speed Boost!?" Su Yi exclaimed in surprise.
"Then throw the stone!"
Without hesitation, Yian Kut-Ku hurled the hardened stone. Scolipede, still recovering from its dodge, was struck hard. As a Bug-type, it took super-effective damage.
"Gu-gah!" Scolipede howled in pain, its glare now murderous.
"Again! Hardened Stone Strike!"
Seeing Yian Kut-Ku ready another powerful attack, Scolipede roared: "Gu! Gah!"
The ground cracked, glowing crimson light seeping through. Scolipede's body was suddenly engulfed in a red aura, rapidly growing in size.
The sky darkened, and ominous red storm clouds swirled above its head.
"Dynamax?! This really is Galar?!"
(Note: The size of Yian Kut-Ku in its hunting stance feels smaller than its official listed length. It seems likely that its recorded length measures from beak to tail when fully stretched, whereas something like a Rathalos maintains a straighter posture.)
