Chapter 11: Chapter 11: Taming, Harvesting, and Setting Out Again!
"Go! Poké Ball!" Su Yi confidently threw the ball. The Kulu-Ya-Ku was already severely injured—it shouldn't have any strength left to resist, right?
Thud!
The Poké Ball absorbed Kulu-Ya-Ku and fell to the ground, while the Great Jagras watched the capture process intently.
Wobble!
The Poké Ball shook once.
Wobble!
A second time.
Pop!
The Poké Ball burst open! Kulu-Ya-Ku, dragging its heavily injured body, let out a weak, defiant cry, unwilling to be captured.
"Why though?" Su Yi couldn't understand what the Kulu-Ya-Ku was holding onto so stubbornly. He released Chansey and said, "Please, use Sing."
"Chanseyyy!" Chansey smiled and waved, singing a soft and soothing melody.
The lullaby was hypnotic, lulling the exhausted and wounded Kulu-Ya-Ku into drowsiness.
"What's the point of this? Just because I took one of your eggs?"
Looking at the Kulu-Ya-Ku, which was fighting off sleep but still resisting stubbornly, Su Yi felt helpless.
The bird Pokémon's gaze remained locked onto the Fire Dragon egg placed beside Su Yi—it refused to look away, no matter what. Su Yi couldn't help but sigh. This thing really loves eggs, huh?
Back in the Great Jagras' den, it had already eaten two or three eggs and still wanted to carry one back to its own nest. Normally, a Kulu-Ya-Ku would just snatch an egg and quickly run home to enjoy it.
Clearly, this particular Kulu-Ya-Ku was an extreme egg lover—even daring to steal a Rathalos egg! The only reason it succeeded was that the Rathalos couple had been distracted by an unknown threat.
"I only have one more chance to throw the ball." Su Yi took out another Poké Ball.
Judging from its current state, even the slightest attack might be the last straw.
Moreover, perhaps due to the differences in power systems between the Monster Hunter world and the Pokémon world, status effects like sleep seemed to have little effect on wary monsters.
Su Yi could only try again.
"Chansey." Just as he was about to throw the ball, Chansey tapped him with its small hand.
"What's up, Chansey?" Su Yi looked down. Chansey patted its belly with a knowing expression.
Under Su Yi's puzzled gaze, Chansey walked up to Kulu-Ya-Ku and took out an egg from the pouch on its belly, then held it out to the struggling Pokémon.
"Wait… are you giving it an egg?" Su Yi was stunned.
"Chansey!" Chansey smiled and offered the egg again.
Kulu-Ya-Ku's eyes lit up, and it eagerly grabbed the egg, pecking at it quickly.
According to the Pokédex, Chansey's eggs are highly nutritious, and once it evolves into Blissey, its eggs can even bring happiness and calmness to those who eat them.
Apparently, Chansey's egg was exactly what Kulu-Ya-Ku wanted. The rugby-ball-sized egg was devoured in just a few bites.
After finally enjoying its favorite food, Kulu-Ya-Ku visibly relaxed.
The exhaustion, injuries, and effects of Sing overwhelmed it all at once. Letting out a contented sigh, it collapsed and fell into a deep sleep, looking as if it had no regrets.
"Did it think we were going to kill it, and just wanted to taste an egg one last time before dying?" Su Yi suddenly had this amusing thought.
He walked over and gently tapped Kulu-Ya-Ku with the Poké Ball. This time, it was absorbed instantly—no resistance at all. The capture was complete.
"That was eye-opening." Su Yi could only sigh. Sometimes, a love for food is motivation enough.
He released Kulu-Ya-Ku again, allowing Chansey to use Heal Pulse on it. Once he confirmed that its injuries were no longer serious, he recalled it back into the ball.
Checking his Hunter's Guide, he saw that the mission Hunt Kulu-Ya-Ku was marked as complete, and he had received five Poké Balls as a reward.
After accounting for his previous usage, he now had nine Poké Balls and two trap tools, giving him more options for future captures.
"It's getting late. Let's head back to the Coastal Forest Camp for the night before returning to the Pokémon world," Su Yi said, closing the guidebook. Carefully collecting materials along the way, he made his way through the forest.
As the sun set, the campfire at the Coastal Forest Camp burned brightly. Su Yi lit an old kerosene lamp left behind at the site, illuminating the ingredients before him.
Wild mushrooms, glow flowers, sunflowers, herbivore meat, herbivore eggs, sashimi fish, and various scattered berries and vegetables—these were tonight's dinner.
Su Yi rubbed his hands together. "The Ancient Tree Forest is really rich in resources."
This untamed land still had so much left to explore.
"My first time making Felyne Food… this feels kinda exciting." He awkwardly handled the ingredients, fumbling with a small knife.
Before this, Su Yi's cooking skills were average at best—he never really put effort into it.
Now, he had no choice but to rely on the knowledge granted by his golden finger, clumsily practicing and familiarizing himself with the techniques.
"Let me help, nya!" Rucao, the Felyne, ran over and joined in, assisting Su Yi in preparing and cooking the food.
As smoke curled upward and delicious aromas filled the air, plates of food were soon placed on the stone table:
Grilled mushrooms, mushroom soup, stir-fried vegetables, grilled meat, roasted fish, egg custard, and a fruit platter.
"Smells amazing!" Su Yi took a deep breath, his appetite immediately stirred.
The Felyne twitched its nose. "Such a feast, nya!"
"Good food is meant to be shared. Come on out, everyone!" Su Yi tossed his Poké Balls into the air, releasing Great Jagras, Kulu-Ya-Ku, and Chansey into the camp.
"Chansey!" Chansey happily sniffed the delicious scents filling the air.
"Rawr?" Great Jagras eyed the food suspiciously, but as the mouthwatering aromas reached its nostrils, its saliva began to drip involuntarily.
"Waah?!" The previously unconscious Kulu-Ya-Ku finally woke up, panicking the moment it saw Su Yi's group.
"Calm down!" Su Yi immediately tried to reassure it.
"Growl!" Great Jagras let out a low warning and raised a claw glowing with green energy, signaling for Kulu-Ya-Ku to behave.
Just as Kulu-Ya-Ku was flailing in fear, Su Yi picked up a large bowl of egg custard and walked toward it.
"We're not going to hurt you. Want to try some?" Su Yi smiled and offered the dish.
The rich scent of eggs wafted into Kulu-Ya-Ku's beak. Its stomach, still empty from its recovery, growled in response.
Seeing this, Great Jagras withdrew its claws and lay down beside Su Yi, watching the bird Pokémon curiously.
Assured by Great Jagras' relaxed stance, Su Yi grinned. "No need to worry."
Kaaao!
Unable to resist the temptation any longer, Kulu-Ya-Ku eagerly scooped up the egg custard and devoured it.
In just a few mouthfuls, the entire bowl was gone. It smacked its beak, savoring the silky, sweet taste.
"Kulu-Ya-Ku, why don't you come adventure with me? You'll get to eat all sorts of egg dishes," Su Yi coaxed.
Kaa!
The bird Pokémon tilted its head, glancing at Su Yi's tent—specifically, at the Rathalos egg wrapped in a bundle.
Su Yi coughed awkwardly and quickly blocked its line of sight.
"Ahem, not that one. Think of it this way—by joining me, you'll get to explore dangerous places and find even better eggs."
Kulu-Ya-Ku chirped softly, seemingly considering it.
"Anyway, we're companions now. Let's work together!" Su Yi reached out to shake its claw.
Kulu-Ya-Ku hesitated, then gently tapped its claw against his hand—perhaps in agreement.
"Rawr." Great Jagras let out a low growl, as if welcoming its new teammate.
Su Yi tossed a large piece of roasted meat toward the Great Jagras.
"Of course, there's also you. I'll be counting on you from now on."
Chomp! The Great Jagras swallowed the meat in one bite, licked its teeth, and seemed to crave more.
"Haha! Don't worry, there's plenty more!" Su Yi took out more Aptonoth meat and eggs, starting to cook again.
The Kulu-Ya-Ku and the Great Jagras eagerly waited for their meal, while Chansey was particularly fond of the Ancient Tree Forest's special mushrooms. Meanwhile, Rucao was busy blowing on the grilled fish to cool it down.
"No need to rush," Su Yi chuckled, watching the feline impatiently trying to take a bite.
This scene reminded him of the "Meowscular Chef" food cutscene from Monster Hunter: World.
Every time a hunter finished eating and got up, the Palico would look at them in shock, then glance at its own unfinished food, and hurriedly speed up to finish its meal.
The Great Jagras slowly chewed on a roasted Aptonoth leg, savoring a taste it had never taken the time to enjoy before.
The Kulu-Ya-Ku pecked at the egg custard, relishing this unfamiliar yet refined way of eating.
Chansey, having a small appetite, finished early and was already gazing at the starry sky, while the feline finally got to enjoy its grilled fish. It meowed happily, its little "white gloves" now covered in grease.
Watching this scene, Su Yi felt a deep sense of satisfaction. Perhaps this was the joy a chef felt when seeing diners enjoy their food.
"It's tiring, but if I get the chance, I should try making more 'Palico Meals'. I should also gather more cookware and seasonings."
A Night of Reflection
As night deepened, the Great Jagras and Kulu-Ya-Ku were returned to their Poké Balls to rest, while the exhausted feline curled up in the tent, already fast asleep.
Su Yi sat on a stone stool outside the tent, gazing up at the clear night sky, feeling both joy and excitement.
Finally, he had time to carefully review his recent gains. Opening the Hunting Guide, he flipped to the Follower Beasts section, where the icons of the Great Jagras and Kulu-Ya-Ku were faintly pulsing.
[Name: Great Jagras]
Species: Great Jagras (Male)
Type: Dragon, Dark
Ability: Powerful Stomach Acid (Removes buffs from swallowed targets, lowers their defense, and defense reduction worsens over time.)
Moves: Bite, Body Slam, Dragon Claw, Devour (Exclusive Move, 40 Power, Dark-type, Special Attack—swallows appropriately sized creatures and deals continuous damage.) Other basic moves like Tackle, Scratch, and Growl are omitted.
Held Item: None
Clearly, the Great Jagras' exclusive move synergized well with its ability, making it a powerful tool for weakening opponents. However, it had two significant drawbacks:
Size Limitation – Due to the Great Jagras' body size, it could swallow most Pokémon, but it would be ineffective against Monster Hunter's larger monsters.
Risk of Counterattack – Pokémon could unleash strong moves even after being swallowed, putting the Great Jagras in danger.
Despite these weaknesses, for now, it remained one of Su Yi's strongest companions.
[Name: Kulu-Ya-Ku]
Species: Kulu-Ya-Ku (Male)
Type: Dragon, Flying
Ability: Resourceful Hunter (Allows Kulu-Ya-Ku to adapt to the battlefield by creating different elemental stone attacks.)
Moves: Peck, Fury Attack, Slash, Rock Smash (Exclusive Move, 95 Power, Rock-type, Physical Attack—Kulu-Ya-Ku grips a hardened stone in its claws to attack and defend, until the stone is discarded or broken.)
The exclusive move and ability of Kulu-Ya-Ku complemented each other well.
Although its move lacked same-type attack bonus (STAB), its high base power made up for it. More importantly, it could counter Ice-types, giving it strategic value.
The Resourceful Hunter ability depended on the battlefield, making it somewhat unpredictable. However, the ability to choose whether to use it gave Kulu-Ya-Ku some flexibility.
An Unexpectedly Fruitful Hunt
Looking at his two newly tamed large monsters—now granted Pokémon-like abilities—along with the vast amount of materials he had gathered, Su Yi couldn't help but reflect.
Initially, his goal had only been to capture small monsters like Aptonoth or Pachycephalosaurus, but an opportunity arose to capture larger monsters instead.
Though it had been a rollercoaster of events, the results far exceeded his expectations, giving him greater confidence for his future journey in the Pokémon world.
"This is hunting. At first, it may seem difficult and the rewards may be few. But as long as you seize opportunities and patiently track your prey, there will always be gains."
Su Yi continued flipping through the Ecology Report, which recorded information on creatures he had encountered—large monsters, small monsters, endemic life, and gathered materials.
Then, he noticed something surprising. The report recorded the sizes of his captured Great Jagras and Kulu-Ya-Ku.
"This Great Jagras is 1,380 cm?! That's a gold crown—a record-sized monster!" Su Yi exclaimed in surprise.
No wonder it had seemed so massive up close.
Meanwhile, Kulu-Ya-Ku's size was quite average—902 cm, neither too big nor too small.
"A good start is half the battle won." Looking at the abundant rewards from this hunt, Su Yi smiled in satisfaction and went to sleep.
A New Adventure Beckons
North of the Coastal Woodland Camp, the dense trees gradually disappeared, replaced by a sea-eroded cliffside. Towering rock pillars stood before the vast ocean. In the game, some monsters would leap between these high pillars to change areas.
"Su Yi, so you're here, nya!" Rucao approached, finding Su Yi staring out over the ocean.
Su Yi pointed toward the sea. The ocean breeze ruffled his hair as he gazed beyond the horizon and said,
"Beyond the sea… lies the Hoarfrost Reach."
Rucao widened its eyes, straining to see through the misty expanse.
"Beyond the ocean… there's another continent, nya?"
"That's right," Su Yi nodded. "But that's not our concern for now."
He took a deep breath of fresh sea air, then smiled.
"Let's head back to camp and pack up. A new world of exploration awaits us!"
Excitedly, the feline cheered, "Time to set off, nya!"
