Chapter 11: Getting to know Nami pt. 2
Nami's face was still in shock. "Do you know that you're the world's most wanted woman?"
I said nothing but looked away from her. What she said was true to a fault. I am the most wanted woman, its true. Yet, with the bounty of 30,000 berries and growing, bounty hunters will start coming after me. I thought. "Nami, if you really wanna travel with me, there is one thing I will say. Assassins do their missions alone."
Nami looked at me. "I understand. As a thief I know what it's like to live on my own. When my mother died, I was forced to join the Fishmen as their navigator and to draw them maps as they went from village to village, forcing the people to pay them tribute. My sister and people turned their back on me when they discovered what I had done. I was promised my freedom if I offered the leader of the Fishmen a great sum of berries. 1 million to be exact. When I came close to fulfilling my end of the bargain, I soon learned it was a trap. That's when I took this ship and left."
I looked at her. "Do you and your sister talk anymore?"
Nami nodded. "We have made up since then. When she and our people learned that what I was doing was to help our community, they revolted in hopes to allow my freedom." She smiled. "I'm sorry. I'm rambling again. But I think that for us to be friends, we should get to know each other right?"
"Yes you're right." I let out a genuine smile. It felt good to open up somewhat to a girl who understood the type of world that I was forced into.
Luffy and Zoro came over to where Nami and I were. "No, Kat. You don't have to do all your missions alone. I know you don't know very well yet, but I will become a great ally to you." Luffy smiled placing a hand on my shoulder. "We will become great friends."
Zoro just stood there with his arms crossed. All three swords at his side. There was a comforting look in his eyes before he broke the silence. "Luffy, you don't know the suffering that Pretty Kitty has endured in becoming what she is. People at the Assassination Guild abuse up and coming assassins. They break them down in an attempt to brainwash them. All students of this dark art lose their identity."
Nami started at him. "Hold on, is that what Kat meant when she said they becoming hitmen and hitwomen?"
Zoro nodded. "They are taught to give up emotions and become nothing but paid bodyguards for the government. Yet there is a good majority of them that break away from this task."
Nami looked at him. "You can't tell me, that you feel in love with an emotionless killer?"
Zoro shook his head. "Although Pretty Kitty is forced to hide her emotions in public and keep her guard up, with me it's different."
Nami tilted her head. "What do you mean, with you it's different?"
"I mean is that she can be her true self."
Luffy popped back a few hours later. He had disappeared while Zoro and Nami were talking. "I found Nami's boat. "Let's get going."
I nod. "Yes, let's leave this place."
Nami smiled. "Yes, I agree with Kat. This town reeks of idiots."
The four of us boarded the small ship and left the port. It grew smaller and smaller from behind us. I sighed and sat down on the floor and despite being an "emotionless killer" as Nami so gratefully put it. She wasn't wrong but she was wholly right either. I put my head in my hands thinking that there was something about this adventure I was taking with Luffy would hopefully change that.
Nami noticed my face. "Hey, I didn't mean what I said."
"It's fine, Nami. You were right. I am an emotionless killer. I've killed thousands of innocent people to get to my target. I've used all types of weapons. Smoke bombs, paper bombs, poison daggers and swords, and others. There's a girl named Alys Rogders where Zoro and I live. She looked up to me and doubted she still would if she found out that her idol is a monster."
Zoro sat next to me and put his hand on my shoulder. "You're not a monster. I know the real you."
I shook my head. "No Zoro, you don't. Even if you knew the real me, you'd leave."
Zoro smiled. "You know that I wouldn't. Pretty Kitty, I love you. I've always loved you." He lifted my head so that I was facing him. "I made a promise to you and your father. You are my everything."
I smiled and tears started flowing down my cheeks. "And you are mine."
Nami and Luffy looked at each other and smiled, not wanting to interrupt the moment. Nami turned her attention toward the open waters, scanning the East Sea for any signs of other ships, be they Pirate or Marine. A moment, a large island appeared in the distance. "Guys, there's land ahead."
