Chapter 73
Chapter 73 – Don’t Provoking This Woman
“Ooka…”
Hayama looked complicatedly at the huddled boy on the floor, groaning in pain while holding his back with one hand, muttering “my back.”
Before he could speak up, Kaburagi from the side shouted angrily.
“So it was you, Ooka!” He grabbed Ooka’s collar and pulled him up sharply, “Why did you do such a thing? How can we still think of you as a friend!?”
“Cough cough!” The harsh tugging on his collar made Ooka instinctively start to cough.
“…Friend?” He sneered, then struggled free from Kaburagi’s grip, “How could you even say this kind of thing?”
“What!?”
Kaburagi’s eyebrows shot up, staring fiercely at him. Ooka glared right back, his voice cold with mockery, “What friendship? From beginning to end, we were just Hayama’s ‘friends’, right?”
“No wonder you think you’ve become someone as well-liked as he is after being around Hayama.”
“You annoying babbler! You dull and slow bloke! And me, a small and foolish guy… without Hayama, no one would want to deal with us!”
Ooka raised his finger, pointing successively at Kaburagi and Yamato, then himself.
Kaburagi and Yamato were stunned by his sudden outburst, unable to utter a word.
Without Hayama, there was nothing between us! he roared hysterically, “So why should I be wrong if I want to get rid of you guys to stay in the group with Hayama!?”
Facing Ooka’s wild rage, Hachiman Hikigaya lowered his eyes slightly and murmured under his breath, “At the end of it all, what binds you all is nothing but pretense.”
Within the Service Club, although Hachiman tried to lower his voice, Ooka still noticed him.
He turned his head sharply, glaring at Hachiman, his angry gaze meeting Hachiman’s lifeless eyes, “What does a person no one knows the name of understand here!? I did this because I didn’t want to end up like you, ignored and forgotten, nobody cares about!”
Hachiman looked away in silence, filled with disdain for Ooka inside.
So what if you’re ignored? So what if no one cares?
That’s how he got through it, and he’s doing fine.
Relying solely on the group was like a scavenger living on ambiance in society. To Ooka, those people without the courage to embark on their own path are weak.
But he doesn’t even want to argue with someone like Ooka. In fact, Ooka’s pursuit of ambiance may mirror the vast majority of people, just not as exaggerated.
Isn’t Yui the same?
Seemingly having vented all his pent-up emotions, Ooka fell silent, only breathing heavily with each breath.
“Are you done?” Snow之下Yukino, who hadn’t spoken before, crossed her arms, her cold eyes watching the group’s argument, “If you are done, please leave the Service Club.”
“What a boring farce. It was quite a pain to watch this nonsense.”
The fire that had almost died down inside Ooka flared up again.
“What did you say!?” He took a step toward the girl, but recalled being easily thrown out by her before; he hesitated and retracted his leg, “And you, a popular girl would understand…”
“Yes, indeed, I don’t understand.” Snow之下Yukino tilted her head slightly, revealing an arrogance that surpassed everyone, “I don’t understand this kind of behavior, and I don’t comprehend the differences between people so great that they can’t grasp simple concepts. I am even more bewildered at the thought of you sharing human existence.”
“You have lowered our humanity.”
Stern words poured out of her mouth relentlessly, causing doubt over how her lips could possibly speak so chillingly.
“You despicable woman…”
Without giving Ooka a chance to retort, Snow之下Yukino continued her attack mercilessly.
“Because you wanted to fit in by clinging to Hayama Hayato? Because you freely criticize others due to the possibility of not being in the workplace project team with Hayama? Now, attempting to give your pitiful actions a righteous justification?”
“That’s too much.”
“The reason you must curry favor with Hayama, and rely on the group for survival at school, boils down essentially to this: you’re too weak.”
“Your inadequacies, instead of striving to improve yourself, thinking of tricks to achieve goals like what you’ve done, and yet you want to defend yourself?”
“Look at you! I pity you,” She gazed at him, eyes full of pity, “Can’t stand it any longer, huh? Just go ahead and refute me if you must.”
“I will make sure you realize your ugliness.”
“Snow之下, please stop talking…” Hayama decided to intervene, his voice soft.
Snow之下Yukino cast her cold glance towards him, questioning, “Can’t see your own ugliness as well?”
“No, not needed…” Hayama shut his mouth.
Sprayed with no defense, Ooka was left frustrated and speechless, silently clenching his fists until he stormed out of the Service Club, unable to bear his humiliation.
Hayama stretched out to the door, seemingly wanting to stop him but refrained.
Better for him to cool off rather than let Snow之下Yukino keep hammering at him. Hayama himself also needed some time.
He would talk again with Ooka tomorrow.
Even though he had acted that way, Hayama still considered him as a friend. If things could be amended and Kaburagi and Yamato could reconcile, it would be ideal.
If not, Hayama would ensure the whole incident remained undisclosed, not wanting Ooka’s life to turn sour, possibly leading to a transfer.
To tell the truth, Ooka no longer sparked his anger, just left him feeling slightly sorry for Ooka.
