Chapter 56
Chapter 56: The Hierarchy
Tap, tap, tap…
The sound of footsteps echoed in the quiet corridor.
After entering the dormitory area, Yukinoshita Yukino, who had appeared quite relaxed earlier, became cautious.
It was as if this place was a world apart from the lobby. Windows along the corridor were somehow covered with wooden planks, allowing only faint light to seep through the cracks. The corridor was enveloped in shadows, giving the feeling that something strange lurked within, sending chills down one’s spine.
As they walked, Yukinoshita Yukino and Hachiman Hikigaya had already searched through several rooms ahead. The furniture inside each room was neatly arranged, showing that the children living there must have been very tidy.
“Strange, aren’t there any cursed spirits here?”
Yukinoshita opened another door and found no cursed spirit as before. Only the items within seemed more disorganized than the other rooms. There was no other anomaly.
She closed the door and continued deeper.
“It’s possible that all the cursed spirits are concentrated elsewhere?” said Hachiman.
“Even so, we need to confirm every part of the residential area. We can’t let any escape,” Yukinoshita frowned slightly, an uneasy feeling growing in her heart. “Let’s speed up our investigation.”
They checked each room one by one but didn’t find anything unusual, not even a single mosquito.
Back to the corridor, floating dust particles illuminated by slender beams of light. They walked through, entering another room.
“This doesn’t feel right,” Yukinoshita furrowed her brows. “Did you notice how increasingly messy the rooms are becoming?”
Tables and chairs were knocked over, things on the desks scattered, bed sheets dragged onto the floor, yellow pillows stained with black spots, and dark red marks on the sheets.
Compared to the neat rooms at the beginning, this room looked like it had been pillaged.
“Really, is it not odd enough for rooms that have probably not been lived in for a while to still be clean?”
Hachiman commented subconsciously, then froze.
Both realized something was amiss, leaving the room and returning to the corridor. Apart from them, the corridor remained empty, silent.
“There are only three rooms left; let’s check them separately.” Yukinoshita clenched her fist, feeling sweaty as the situation grew stranger.
However, when she stood in front of the third-to-last door, she froze.
The wooden door was marked with fine scratches, seemingly gouged out, with bloodstains still visible.
Opening the door revealed a chaotic scene. Bloodstains dotted the white walls, and debris littered throughout. Broken furniture, overturned chairs, torn bedsheets scattered everywhere.
The entire room was engulfed in a bloody madness.
The last three rooms were the same.
“What could have happened…” the black-haired girl’s eyes were filled with shock and confusion.
“These rooms are clearly ranked,” Hachiman whispered. He seemed to have understood something. “Could it be that the deeper one goes, the lower their status within the orphanage?”
“…You mean the lower-status kids are bullied?”
Yukinoshita quickly grasped his meaning and inferred further, “If that’s true, it would be too much.”
From the traces of blood on the floors, the bullying had escalated to criminal behavior.
Considering the good facilities, this orphanage should have been well-funded and caring. It was alarming to find such serious problems.
“It’s just speculation with no proof, and it might also be the work of cursed spirits.” Suddenly, he heard a soft noise.
“Hear that?” asked Hachiman.
“Movement?” Yukinoshita frowned. “I didn’t hear anything… wait, on the wall behind you!”
The girl’s eyes widened. On the blood-splattered wall behind Hachiman, another handprint appeared. Simultaneously, she heard the sound of hands tapping against the wall—the same noise Hachiman mentioned.
Their awareness heightened instantly. The creature responsible seemed to realize it was discovered. Bloodstains rapidly spread across the wall and ground, moving towards them.
“The room is too small, let’s get out!”
Yukinoshita decisively led them out. After fighting alongside Lin Qi, she became more acute and resolute.
They rushed out as doors flew open, like dominoes reversing. Shadows writhed as the building trembled.
“Who’s… coming?”
“Doors open, people in…”
With a crackling sound, hoarse and trembling calls echoed from each room, followed by deformed cursed spirits peering out.
“As expected, they were hiding!” gritted Hachiman, realizing the complexity of their predicament.
Both were trapped at the end of the hallway, facing the cursed spirits cornering them.
In shock, the spirits from the rooms crept forward, one grabbing Yukinoshita’s ankle with a fresh pool of blood.
“Watch your feet, Yukinoshita!”
As Hachiman tried to use a technique to solve the problem, Yukinoshita abruptly lifted her trapped leg, pulling the spirit along with it. She stomped hard, crushing the spirit and cracking the tiles beneath it.
“Ah?” exclaimed the boy with wide eyes.
Before he could react, the girl turned toward the boarded window and burst through it to the outside.
“Come on!”
While internally pondering her identity, Hachiman followed suit, leaping out before the spirits could swarm him.
After some time, crushed against the broken window, a mass of spirits were stuck, forcing a large hole in the wall, filling the area with dust.
Frenzied zombie-like spirits charged out amidst the dust and attacked them mercilessly.
