Chapter 9: Ch-9 Dead Mission
Is the Future Really Set in Stone…
Huff… Huff…
"Eren, are you okay?" Mikasa asked, looking at him as he breathed heavily.
"Ah… yeah, it was just a long nightmare," Eren said, trying to recall the details of his dream.
"That's why you shouldn't take on such heavy responsibilities. Look at yourself now—you look so stressed," Carla scolded him.
"Mom, it's alright. It's only been six months, and besides, it's for the best," Eren replied, looking out the window. From there, he could see countless tents covered in snow.
"Many people are going to die if this continues. The food is already running out, and it's only the beginning of winter," Carla said solemnly, also looking outside.
They were currently inside a small wooden house.
"Hmm… I wonder if they'll die from this or from something else," Eren muttered blankly.

Six Months Ago
"So, you're that young man?" Dot Pixis said while sipping his wine.
"Yes, sir! I'm Eren Yeager!" Eren said loudly, standing at attention.
'Hell yeah! I nailed that! Now I just have to impress him more, and that's how I start my journey to becoming Fleet Admiral!' (N/A: This is our protagonist.)
"Haha! Good! I see you've got fighting spirit—you'll make a fine man," Pixis laughed.
"Thank you, sir!" Eren shouted again, doing his best to behave like a proper soldier.
"Is the commander already drunk? He's clearly just a kid, no older than ten," one sergeant whispered to another.
"This is why you're still a sergeant in the Garrison Regiment. That boy is using the fastest technique to get promoted—sucking up to higher-ups," the second sergeant said in a serious tone, studying Eren's every move.
"Oh, damn it… so this is the cheat code?" The first sergeant looked at Eren, dumbfounded.
"Wait, then why are you still stuck here?" he asked his comrade, who had been in the same position for five years.
"Cough It's not easy to master. That guy over there hasn't managed it, and he's already fifty years old," the older sergeant muttered.
The old sergeant's mouth twitched as he overheard the whispers. 'Damn kids these days have no respect for their seniors.'
Pixis, meanwhile, looked at Eren seriously. "Good. Seeing you like this, I know you can handle this responsibility."
"Huh?" Eren had a big question mark over his head. He thought he was about to receive a reward, but this old man was clearly plotting something.
"You see, the government can't afford to provide food for the refugees for long. All of humanity is now facing a major crisis," Pixis said while drinking his wine as if it were no big deal.
"Ah… but what can I do?" Eren asked, confused.
"Well, you can take charge of the plantations and farming in this area. You know, humanity is suffering from a food shortage," Pixis said, this time setting his wine aside and looking at Eren with sharp eyes.
"Wh-What?" Eren was shocked.
"But isn't this basically a doomed task?" Eren asked with concern.
"It's true—it's a nearly impossible task. But if we can save even one more person, that's our duty as soldiers," Pixis said and resumed drinking his wine.
'But I'm not a soldier!' Eren screamed internally.
Pixis was closely observing Eren, who was deep in thought (or rather, cursing internally). He was actually impressed by how the boy withstood the pressure and still thought rationally. In Eren's eyes, he saw a strong fighting spirit.
This responsibility wasn't just about food—it was a test. A way to nurture Eren, to see his true capabilities.
'What should I do? Damn it… I know I can't do much to help, but if I take this task, at least we won't have to live like refugees.'
Eren couldn't think only about himself. Six months from now, winter would start. Life was already difficult, and it would only get harder.
"Yes, sir! I understand!" Eren finally said, placing his right fist over his heart.
----
Present Time
Eren stood in front of Pixis, who was reviewing the latest reports.
"More than half the refugees have already left and moved to other areas," Eren reported.
"What do you think about it?" Pixis asked, not looking up from the papers.
"It can't be helped," Eren said blankly.
"Well, you're right," Pixis said, standing up. "Good job. From now on, it's on us."
With that, Pixis left.
Eren also returned home and sat near the fireplace, lost in thought.
'What was the point of working so hard? Did it even make a difference? Improving the plantation system, managing food supplies, optimizing resources… only for the refugees to be sent to their deaths.'
Today, Commander Pixis had informed him that the higher-ups had decided to send 15% of humanity's total population—150,000 people—to reclaim Wall Maria. But Eren knew the truth.
It was just a deliberate population control measure—a way to reduce the food shortage crisis caused by the influx of refugees after Wall Maria's fall.
(N/A: In the original series, it was 250,000 people, which was 20% of the population inside Wall Maria—at least, from what I understand.)
"What are you thinking so hard about, Eren?" Armin asked as he sat down beside him.
"I'm thinking about a beautiful blonde girl," Eren replied, causing Armin to look at him in shock.
"Half her face is almost covered by her hair… her figure is childish, but she's got great potential. If only her personality was half as good as mine," Eren sighed dramatically.
Armin didn't know what to say, but suddenly, both boys felt a chill.
Looking back, they saw Mikasa standing there… her face darkened.
"Ah… Mikasa, what's wrong?" Eren asked, a little confused as to why she looked so angry.
Armin's mouth twitched. Even though Eren had changed so much—becoming smarter, more responsible, and socially aware—when it came to this, he was still as dense as ever.
"Eren, I've been with you all this time. Why don't I know about this girl?" Mikasa asked. Her tone was as calm as always, but Eren swore he sensed a bit of killing intent.
"Well… when we go out to collect wood, I happened to meet her a few times. Now we're friends." (At least, that's what he thought.)
"Sorry, I should've introduced you to her. After all, she's only a year older than you two—you'd definitely get along," Eren said like a proud older brother, as if he was helping his socially anxious little sister make friends.
"Oh," Mikasa simply replied and sat down next to him.
'It seems I can't leave him alone… not even when he goes to pee. It's too dangerous.'
Unknown to Eren, the last bit of privacy he had left… was now gone.
To Be Continued…
