Chapter 8: Ch-8 Annie Leonhart
"So it's really true," Dot Pixis said, looking at the report.
"I can't believe that we adults have become so incompetent."
"Has a hundred years of peace inside the walls made us like this?" he asked the soldiers around him.
In response, they only lowered their heads in shame.
"Commander, what should we do?" a female soldier asked.
"We must start growing these plants. The current food supply won't last long," Pixis said, looking out the window at the refugees.
"I'm afraid if that happens..." Pixis paused, turning around with a sharp gaze.
"Right, you said the boy's name was Eren Yeager?"
"Yes, Commander."
Rubbing his chin with his right hand, he said, "Very well. Since he is so good at this, let him take care of the food problem."
"But Commander, he's just a child!" the female soldier said in shock.
"Huh, a normal child wouldn't do something like this," Pixis replied.
Hearing this, everyone in the room was shocked, sweat forming on their foreheads.
"Commander, can a child even bear such a burden?" a middle-aged soldier asked.
"We have no choice. If we don't do something, I wonder how many of these people will be sent to their deaths because of us."
"Actually, you're right. Pushing a child into a situation where success is measured by how many people die... that's something only a devil would do."
Pixis sighed and sat back in his chair. "And we are those devils."
----
"Shit, shit, shit! Why have I gotten myself into such a mess?" a girl with yellow hair, partially covering the right side of her face, muttered.
She walked away from the refugee area, approaching a lake to wash her face.
"I have to go... I have to."
"Hmm? Where do you have to go?"
"Huh?" The girl quickly turned her head and saw the boy standing behind her.
She quietly picked up a stone, ready to strike.
"Huh? Why are you so scared? I'm not a Titan." Eren looked at her, confused as always. He had come to collect wood before answering nature's call.
"I'm not scared of you."
"I'd be more convinced if you put down the rock."
She hesitated for a moment before lowering the stone, then stood up, ready to leave.
"What's your name?" Eren asked as she prepared to go.
"Why should I tell you?" she said coldly.
Eren blinked before snapping his fingers.
"Oh! I get it. You're... hungry." He took out a potato and tossed it to her.
She caught the potato and stared at him. "Are you an idiot?"
"Huh? What... Oh! You must be a tsundere. Given your yellow hair, it's normal."
She looked at him with a face that clearly said, What kind of nonsense is this guy saying?
"Come on, eat up. I had an extra one today."
'Well, technically, I did get an extra one... but I already gave that away.'
But kindness isn't always answered with words. Some people use fists instead.
In a flash, the girl pinned Eren to the ground. He couldn't even stop her.
'Damn, is she even a kid?! Where did she get all this strength from?!'
"Do I look like I need your help?" She locked his arms and legs in place.
"Argh! I get it! You don't need help! I'm the one who needs help!" Eren yelled in pain.
"Still in the mood to joke?" She tightened her grip.
"Argh! I'm sorry!" Eren hurriedly said.
She stopped pressing his arms. "Good, you know your place—"
"I should have introduced myself first before asking your name."
"Huh?" She looked confused.
"My name is Eren Yeager. Nice to meet you!" Eren flashed what he thought was a charming smile, but unfortunately, the person in front of him was anything but ladylike.
"Argh! Argh! I'm sorry! Sorry, Mommy! Argh!"
"Who are you calling Mommy, idiot?!" The girl seemed dead set on breaking his arms.
A few minutes later...
"Huff... Huff..." Eren panted heavily.
"I'm still alive... but I can't feel my arms at all."
'Damn, I only wanted to mess around a little…'
Eren just wanted to have fun, but he made a mistake in choosing his target. Well, that's all nonsense—the truth is, he's the real tsundere here.
"You should be grateful I didn't rip your arms off, pervert."
"Hey! I'm not a pervert!"
"Really? I didn't see you struggling to get away." She crossed her arms.
"Seeing a weak woman like me, all alone out here... you must have been planning something bad."
Eren's mouth twisted. "Please, you can drop the 'woman' and 'weak' part, at the very least."
He stood up and looked at her more closely. 'I didn't notice before, but she's actually pretty... It's just a pity her personality is the worst.'
"Looking at you makes me want to beat you up again."
"I'm sorry, Mommy!" Eren immediately surrendered. He was powerless—like a mere mortal standing before a devil.
'No, she is a devil. A cold-blooded one.'
Grumble...
Suddenly, Eren froze. He tried to run, but she pinned him down again.
"You didn't hear that." Her tone was chilling.
"Y-Yes, ma'am."
"Good." She finally let go, sat by the lake, and started eating the potato.
After a few bites, she turned to look at Eren.
"My name is Annie Leonhart."
"Annie... That's a nice name."
To be continued...
