The Depressed Extra of The Academy

Chapter 7: Ch6 - What Is A Family?

Author's Note:

If you've read the new starting chapter then you know already, but if you haven't. I've realized the chapters are way too short so from Ch5 onwards starting with this chapter they will be much larger.

###

I never really knew what a true family felt like. It was really just me and my mom. I listened to every request as if I was her servant all my life.

So, when I stepped outside of the training grounds after 4 hours, I was shocked to see my new siblings standing in front of me.

"I see little bro has been training. Why don't you spar against me sometime so I can test your skills."

"Mikhail that's the dumbest idea I've ever heard."

She said while putting one hand on her hip and the other on her head.

"Oh, c'mon Clara I'll go easy on him."

"He's a fresh awakened I doubt he can even take a hit from you."

In the midst of this sibling banter, I was just sitting there watching them. My eyes shifted back and forth from Clara to Mikhail.

But for some reason seeing these two idiot siblings I couldn't help but let out a little chuckle.

The moment they heard that they both looked at me.

Mikhail had that same bright smile, and Clara had a soft smirk.

"You've been down in the dumps recently, why don't you come hang out with us?"

I looked at the both of them and gave them a quick nod.

###

A quiet cold night, the dark was just creeping in, but the people were just as bright as day.

The atmosphere was bright, there were people still lighting up the streets and shops hadn't closed for the day.

Mikhail had his hands behind his back and walked forward with no care in the world and Clara was walking beside him.

"Can you stop embarrassing us?"

"How am I embarrassing you guys?! If anyone is embarrassing anybody it's this little loner in the back."

He said while pointing towards me.

'Huh? What'd I do?'

"Sen do you even know where we're going?"

Clara asked clearly expecting a no.

"Uh, no?"

She let out a sigh and explained to me,

"We're going to a nearby boba shop."

"Oh, okay."

She gave me a quick look and turned back around.

"Dad and Mom are out having dinner so we shouldn't get in trouble for sneaking out."

Mikhail explained as he wistfully walked down the crosswalk.

"Anyway, we're almost there."

Clara said as she looked towards something in the distance.

Mikhail suddenly turned back around at me while still walking.

"So, I saw you were practicing the sword. You never had an interest in it when we were young. Why the sudden change?"

"It looked cool."

Mikhail just looked at me blankly for a couple of moments

before bursting out in laughter.

"So then are you going to learn the Karum Style Swordsmanship."

'I had read about how both Clara and Mikhail fought in the novel. The swordsmanship uses an abundance of sources, multiplies their qualities, and enhances the wielder.'

"Maybe I don't think I'm ready for it though."

'I remember that Mikhail broke his legs hundreds of times while mastering it.'

"It can be a little hard for beginners. Unlike Mikhail, I recommend conditioning yourself before attempting it."

"No need to throw shade my way, sis."

"Hopefully our brother didn't inherit your stupidity."

"That hurts, you know."

Throughout the entire walk, these two siblings constantly bantered between themselves yet I never grew tired of it.

"We're here, Sen."

I finally saw the shop they were talking about; it had a sort of cozy vibe to it.

I walked into the store to be greeted by a burly man at the front desk.

"One Taro, One Mango Strawberry, and..."

Clara looked back at me waiting for my order.

"Uh, whatever you'd recommend."

The burly man nodded and went into the back of the store.

We all sat at a nearby table waiting for our orders to come and Mikhail asked me a simple question

"So, Sen what's going on with you?"

"Nothing much just training."

"You must be nervous about the academy. Don't worry if you have any issues you can come to us."

Clara reassured me.

"Thank you."

I simply responded.

'I can sense the conversation has died out. What do I even say?'

"Uh so uh what's going on with you guys?"

Mikhail was about to answer, but Clara immediately cut him off.

"Well, I'm entering senior year next year so it's not all that bad. I heard from past seniors it's not all that bad especially since I have connections. I'm properly just going to become an Awakener and join Dad's guild."

She answered simply as if she had her whole life planned out.

Then I turned to Mikhail expecting something strange to come out of his mouth.

"Well, I'm becoming Student Council President. I don't even know how I got the position. I have no clue how to run things and I'm afraid everybody is gonna see my incompetence from the start, but I still want to try."

The atmosphere had become dead silent as me and Clara just looked at him.

Though he didn't look back at us, he simply stared off as if he saw something in the distance.

'Huh? This is the first time I've ever heard him say anything serious.'

"I'm sure you'll do great."

I could strangely relate to this.

"I remember a time when I felt like that. I was put into a position where I had no clue what I was doing. I thought I was going to make hundreds of mistakes, and I did, but I learned from them. I spent nights correcting myself and eventually I felt like I knew exactly what I was supposed to do."

It was my first case as a lawyer I was talking about. I completely screwed up against an experienced lawyer. I remember spending night after night practicing, having mini-mock trials against my imagination.

Mikhail looked at me so did Clara and for a moment I thought time had stopped.

'Did I say something wrong?'

Then suddenly Mikhail broke the ice and spoke

"I was just joking, Sen. No need to get all serious on me now. I got it, trust in your big bro."

Clara remained silent and so did I.

'I don't know how, but for some reason I know that wasn't a joke.'

###

"What is this weird drink they gave you?"

Mikhail asked while examining the drink I was holding.

It was red, white, and strangely purple with little tapioca pearls at the bottom.

We had just left the store right after we got our drinks.

Clara just walked alongside us sipping on her boba.

"Clara, I'm starvingggg. Won't you treat your dear brothers?"

She looked at us while still drinking her boba.

Not a single word was said, and the straw never left her mouth.

"I'll take that as yes, let's go Sen!"

He grabbed my wrist and dragged me towards what seemed like a fast-food place.

We had just gotten our food; I just ordered some random meal off the menu.

Of course, Mikhail convinced Clara to pay.

Lighthearted banter filled our table as we ate.

'This is nothing like when I spoke to my mother. I guess I always had this sort of fear that I'd disappoint her.'

Laughter, jokes, and stupid comments then I realized,

I realized that I was smiling.

After around an hour Mikhail suddenly looked at his phone.

"Oh crud, it's already 11. We're so cooked when we get home."

"Ah."

We all walked back home with a slightly down mood.

The toughest battle was about to occur.

We had to fend off our mother...

###

"Where were you!? Mikhail, what did you do this time!? Clara, you should've stopped him! Do you know how worried I was!?"

We all just sat there looking guilty as our mother berated our ears.

"Whose idea was this!?"

Me and Clara both pointed at Mikhail with absolutely no shame.

Mikhail just looked at both of us with glistening eyes that screamed "How could you?"

That was the end of our sibling's night out and the next morning I had a sudden urge to get stronger.

Ending Note:

Still a bit shorter than I wanted, but I'll work harder so bare with me for a bit.
