Chapter 38: Chapter 38: New World Police Force
The Vale of Miasma was perpetually shrouded in a thick, murky haze. The rocks were all dull gray, devoid of any scenic beauty—nothing comparable to the Ancient Forest.
As he traversed the jagged terrain littered with bones and remains, Su Yi remained on high alert, wary of the dimly lit surroundings cloaked in miasma.
The eerie wind howled, carrying with it the lingering echoes of terrifying roars.
Su Yi firmly remembered the lesson of letting others fight while he reaped the rewards—a tactic that had built his fortune. He planned to check out the situation, hoping for an opportunity to scavenge something valuable.
Currently, his team was already strong in terms of Pokémon battles, but when it came to Monster Hunter world's creatures, they were still far from being enough.
Furthermore, if Su Yi wanted to establish himself quickly in the Pokémon world, he needed overwhelming power—and powerful monsters were his shortcut.
Thus, he had to seize every opportunity to recruit strong companion beasts.
When Su Yi passed by the small valley where he had carved up the Legiana corpse, he suddenly noticed something—
The meat and bones he had stripped that day had been completely devoured, leaving behind only scattered remnants.
The scoutflies on his waist hovered uncertainly before settling over the traces.
"These markings..."
Su Yi crouched down and examined the scratch marks. Within the markings, he found a jagged tooth fragment embedded in the ground.
"No doubt about it... That gluttonous king of terror—Deviljho!"
Nearby, Su Yi also discovered three-pronged footprints characteristic of brute wyverns—further solidifying the evidence.
"Alright, Bazelgeuse, Deviljho... the old and new police officers are both here. Are they trying to make a New World Police Force?"
On the other side, Rucao seemed to have found something as well.
"Su Yi, meow! This scale... it looks like it belongs to an Odogaron, meow!"
Luchao picked up several broken, dark-red scales from between the bones and rocks.
Upon closer inspection, Su Yi confirmed it—it was indeed from an Odogaron.
"Deviljho's tracks... Odogaron's shattered scales... Did they clash?"
Knowing Odogaron's fearless nature, which even drove it to lunge at Elder Dragons, it wasn't surprising that it would dare to fight Deviljho.
"ROAAARR!"
"GRAAAAH!"
The sounds of a brutal battle echoed through the valley, carried by the chilling winds.
"Let's go!"
Su Yi immediately called Rucao and rushed toward the source of the battle cries.
But just as they hurried forward, the sounds of the fight abruptly stopped.
Tracking the trail all the way, Su Yi couldn't help but feel concerned—
"Did Odogaron lose? Was it killed?"
After all, he had been planning to capture it.
With no more sounds to follow, he had to rely on the scoutflies' intermittent guidance to continue tracking.
The miasma thickened around him as Su Yi stepped into another valley filled with piles of bones.
However, unlike before, the valley was eerily silent.
No insects, no Girros, no Fanged Wyverns—only the crunching of decayed bones and rotting flesh beneath Su Yi's boots.
THUD!
Suddenly, a dull impact sounded from above the valley.
Su Yi's head snapped up, scanning the cliffside.
THUD!
Another sound—his gaze locked onto the source.
A section of the cliff face crumbled, sending a few loose stones tumbling down.
WHOOSH!
A dark-red figure was suddenly sent flying backward, crashing heavily into a pile of corpses some distance from Su Yi.
"It's Odogaron, meow!" Luchao yelped in alarm.
Su Yi narrowed his eyes.
The Odogaron's abdomen had been torn open, revealing deep wounds exposing its bones. Its dark-red flesh was littered with jagged white tooth fragments.
It lay motionless, barely breathing. Its claws twitched weakly, as if struggling to move—but it was clear it wouldn't last much longer.
"ROOOOAAARR!!!"
A deafening roar shook the valley, forcing Su Yi to look up again.
On the cliff's edge, a massive, dark-green Tyrannosaurus loomed above, its golden dragon eyes scanning the area below—like a top-tier predator staring down weak prey.
"Well, damn…" Su Yi muttered.
THUD!
The 20-meter-long behemoth leaped down from the cliff, slamming into the ground with a thunderous impact. The entire valley trembled, sending bones flying into the air.
THUD. THUD. THUD.
With heavy, earth-shaking footsteps, the Deviljho slowly advanced.
Su Yi unconsciously stepped back, his heart pounding to the rhythm of the tremors.
Rucao pressed tightly against Su Yi, its fur standing on end, trembling as it also backed away.
Can you imagine it?
A colossal beast, less than twenty meters away from you.
Just two or three strides, and it could bite down on you.
You barely reach its shin, and it could swallow you whole—chewing you up like a crispy wafer before gulping you down.
To Deviljho, Su Yi was nothing more than a tiny snack—one that wouldn't even require much chewing.
Without hesitation, Su Yi raised his loaded flash pod launcher, aiming directly at Deviljho's menacing head.
Just as he was about to fire—
ROOOOAAARR!!
A high-pitched roar erupted from behind him, accompanied by the gusting wind of massive flapping wings.
Deviljho's gaze immediately shifted past Su Yi, toward something behind him.
"Oh, crap..."
Su Yi spun around, just in time to see a towering figure descending from the sky—
Bazelgeuse.
The explosive wyvern's wings blotted out the sky as it slowly descended onto the valley floor.
Finally, the two great "police officers" had come face to face.
THUD!
Bazelgeuse landed heavily, blocking Su Yi's only escape route.
With Deviljho in front and Bazelgeuse behind, Su Yi and Rucao were now sandwiched between the two monstrous titans.
"ROOOOOAR!"
Deviljho immediately locked its focus onto its equal rival, while Bazelgeuse retaliated with its own piercing battle cry.
"SKREEEEEECH!"
Between the two giants, Su Yi and Rucao clenched their teeth and pressed their hands over their ears, trying to withstand the ear-splitting noise.
"Rucao, use your small size to escape when there's an opening. I'll cover you if needed."
Su Yi adjusted his launcher, his muscles tense, ready to act at any moment.
And then—
The battle began with Bazelgeuse's signature move.
With wings spread wide, Bazelgeuse charged forward at full speed, its powerful legs pounding against the ground.
Su Yi and Rucao immediately threw themselves to the side.
A gust of wind blasted over them as the wyvern's massive wings swept past.
Deviljho didn't back down.
It lowered its front body, opening its jagged, serrated jaws, and lunged for Bazelgeuse's throat.
THUD!
Bazelgeuse slammed into Deviljho, sending it staggering back.
But Deviljho recovered quickly, digging its clawed feet into the ground before clamping its powerful jaws onto Bazelgeuse's neck.
A hot burst of white breath shot from Deviljho's nostrils.
Its thick, muscular neck tensed, and with a violent twist, it lifted Bazelgeuse off the ground—a monster as large as itself.
Su Yi, who had just gotten back on his feet, stared in shock.
Seeing this in a game was one thing—
But witnessing it in real life?
The sheer power was unbelievable.
The massive wyvern, longer than a city bus, was hoisted into the air by brute force.
A storm-like wind kicked up dust and debris, forcing Su Yi to squint his eyes against the blast.
This was Deviljho's raw, unrelenting ferocity—
The true definition of an apex predator, a beast that disrupted entire ecosystems.
Most large monsters simply could not contend with its wrath.
"This isn't the time to be in awe! Rucao, run!"
Su Yi grabbed Rucao, dashing toward the opening left by Bazelgeuse's charge.
"SKREEEEEEE!!"
But Bazelgeuse wasn't done.
Its scales flickered with an ominous red glow as heat surged through its body.
The explosive scales beneath its belly turned red-hot, priming dozens of volatile projectiles.
In the next instant—
A chain of explosions erupted all at once, detonating right beneath Deviljho.
BOOM!
Deviljho roared in pain, releasing its grip as flames and shrapnel tore into its flesh.
Bazelgeuse flapped its wings, propelling itself backward to regain distance.
THUD!
And then—
Its massive talons came crashing down—right in front of Su Yi.
In an instant, a huge shadow engulfed him.
"SHIT, SHIT, SHIT!"
Su Yi yelled in frustration, yanking Rucao to a sudden stop.
