Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Rucao's First Blade Technique!
At the training ground nestled in the valley behind the dojo, Master Mustard took on the role of referee with great interest upon hearing that Su Yi was going to battle Bea.
Standing on opposite ends of the field, Su Yi was eager and full of energy, while Bea remained expressionless and as steady as a mountain.
It was hard to believe that one of them was a young adult stepping into society, while the other was a teenage athlete. Their mental states seemed almost reversed from what one would expect.
"Bea…" Master Mustard sighed inwardly as he observed her.
The very day Bea arrived on Armor Island, she had challenged Master Mustard to a battle.
As a fellow martial artist, Mustard deeply respected this karate prodigy who had repeatedly challenged Leon. He agreed to a full 6v6 battle using his main team.
The result? Bea suffered a crushing defeat.
Master Mustard had quickly noticed the issue—Bea had sealed her heart away, avoiding any emotional openings. In doing so, however, she also buried her true feelings, making it difficult even for her Pokémon partners to connect with her.
Her obsession with victory seemed to exist for its own sake, as if she were trapped under some invisible pressure, locking her spirit in a cage.
To break free from this cage, she needed an opponent who could fight with unrestrained passion—someone who battled not just with strategy, but with heart.
That's why Mustard thought of Su Yi.
Su Yi was a pure adventurer, brimming with enthusiasm for battles, unbound by rigid strategies, and deeply connected with his Pokémon through enviable bonds. He was also someone destined for greatness in the future.
The cure for Bea was not a crushing defeat but the collision of youthful souls. So, Mustard casually mentioned Su Yi's name to her—and just like that, this battle came to be.
"Let's see how this turns out," Mustard thought.
...
"A Fighting-type Gym Leader… I'm at a bit of a disadvantage," Su Yi muttered.
His team composition wasn't ideal:
Rucao(Normal-type) and Great Jagras (Dark-type) were both weak to Fighting.
Kulu-Ya-Ku had a Flying-type advantage, but it lacked strong Flying-type moves.
Larvesta was essentially unfit for battle.
As for Chansey… well, Su Yi's Chansey had the Healer ability. She was kind and gentle, not some pink demon!
"Su Yi can hold his own against Leon's main team, but according to him, Leon went easy on him. Plus, he still lost, even though he was using his strongest Pokémon against Leon's mid-tier ones," Bea analyzed.
"His experience as a Trainer is still short… I'll go with these three."
She finalized her 3v3 lineup.
"Go, Machop!"
"Machop!" A small, humanoid Pokémon, standing just under a meter tall, leapt onto the battlefield.
"A Machop, huh? Bea clearly isn't using her ace team," Su Yi noted.
Although it felt a bit insulting, he had to admit—his current lineup wouldn't stand much of a chance against Bea's main team anyway.
"Well, in that case… go, Rucao!"
"Meow!" Rucao dashed onto the field, ready for battle.
Thanks to Su Yi's coaching, Rucao was aware that it was at a type disadvantage against this opponent. It would need to be extra cautious.
Master Mustard looked at both sides. "You both know the rules, right? Then… let the battle begin!"
Bea made the first move.
"Brick Break!"
The classic Fighting-type move! Machop dashed forward with agility, its right hand glowing as it struck downward.
"Dodge it!"
"Stay on it!"
Su Yi commanded first, but Bea followed up immediately.
One was a trained martial artist, the other a nimble forest hunter. The two small Pokémon weaved and darted around each other in a fast-paced dance of agility.
Seeing that a simple chase wouldn't break the deadlock, Bea furrowed her brows and changed tactics.
"Brick Break again!"
"Chop!" Machop's hand glowed once more as it struck downward with force.
"A chance! Rucao, dodge and counter with Cat Strike!" Su Yi shouted.
"Meow!" Rucao nimbly sidestepped, avoiding the attack before swiftly drawing its short bone blade to slash back.
"Now! Use your other hand!" Bea commanded.
"Chop!" Machop, having missed with one hand, immediately swung its other in another Brick Break attack.
Thud!
Cat Strike was completely blocked.
"Oh no!" Su Yi realized Bea's strategy.
Just as he feared—
"Low Sweep!" Bea ordered coldly.
While Machop's upper body held off Rucao's attack, its leg shot out in a sweeping kick.
"Meow!" Rucao yowled in pain as it was knocked to the ground.
"Rucao! Are you okay?!" Su Yi called out in concern.
"Ow! So this is what real Pokémon battles are like, meow?" Rucao staggered back to its feet, wincing as pain shot through its right leg the moment it tried to stand properly.
"Rucao's still too inexperienced. Even though Bea's Machop hasn't evolved yet, it has undergone strict training—its overall strength is beyond Rucao's current level," Su Yi thought.
"Should I switch out?"
Before he could decide, Rucao bared its teeth in a grin.
"Su Yi! I can still fight, meow!"
"There will be tougher battles ahead, right? I won't be left behind, meow!" Rucao gripped its bone blade tightly, eyes filled with determination.
Seeing that fierce resolve, Bea's impression of Rucao shifted—it was no mere pet Pokémon.
Rucao stood poised, blade in hand, eyes locked onto its opponent.
Bea remained unfazed. "Brick Break!"
Machop charged in once again with blinding speed.
Su Yi, however, didn't give an immediate command. Instead, he focused intently on Machop's movements.
Rucao, trusting its Trainer, remained still despite the incoming attack.
"Chop!" Machop swung down forcefully—
"Sidestep and counter!"
Rucao twisted its body nimbly, sidestepping just in time while slashing back with its blade.
Su Yi clenched his fist in excitement. This is it!
Because Rucao was a Normal-type, its attack wasn't super effective, but—
"Machop! Double Brick Break!" Bea ramped up the offense.
Machop's small frame moved swiftly, glowing fists coming down in rapid succession.
"Meow!" Rucao dodged desperately, but the pain in its leg caused a misstep—leaving an opening.
"Rucao!" Su Yi tensed.
At that moment—
A sharp glint flashed in Rucaot's eyes. Suddenly, Machop's attacks became clear, every movement visible as if slowed down.
A mysterious power guided Rucao's body—twisting precisely to evade Machop's blows at the last possible moment.
"Oh? That's Detect," Master Mustard's eyes sparkled. "Or rather… Keen Eye."
Su Yi was stunned for a brief second, but quickly snapped back into battle mode.
"Now! Strike back—Precise Slash!"
"Meow!"
Rucao swiftly countered with a clean, precise strike, catching Machop completely off guard.
Slash!
A white streak flashed across Machop's chest, making it yelp in pain as it stumbled backward.
Bea furrowed her brows, about to issue another command—
But Su Yi, grinning wildly, roared, "Ride the momentum! Swing your blade in a full arc!"
"Meow!"
Rucao dashed forward, leaping into Machop's guard, and slashed in a circular motion—
Whoosh!
"Chop!" Machop cried out as it took a heavy hit, crashing to the ground in agony.
