Chapter 2: Chapter 2: Monster Hunter? Pokémon? A Dream Crossover!
"It's Nargacuga! Damn it! I just escaped from that forest brute (Anjanath), and now I've run into the Crimson Meteor (Nargacuga)!" Su Yi gritted his teeth, enduring the sharp pain in his back.
Once again, this forest showed him the cruel reality of a world overrun by monsters. This wasn't a game. The monsters here didn't scale to his strength—they appeared as they naturally would, regardless of whether he could handle them or not.
If it were Anjanath, a brute with more brawn than brains, a few hunter tricks could probably get rid of it. But Nargacuga? This agile, keen-eyed predator wasn't so easy to fool.
"I'm out of dung bombs, meow!" The Felyne at his side was clearly out of options too.
Nargacuga let out a low growl as it slowly emerged from the shadows, its crimson-ringed eyes exuding pure, merciless killing intent.
Clang!
The Felyne, named Rucao, drew a short bone dagger—not even as long as a watermelon knife—and tossed a small, flat, round bottle to Su Yi, marked with a paw print emblem.
"Drink this potion and run for it, meow! I'll hold it off!"
At that moment, the small-statured Felyne looked incredibly valiant.
"No! I got you into this mess—I won't just run away. Besides, I still have a chance!" Su Yi refused to abandon the cat who had saved his life.
In the game, hunters and Felynes never truly died—it was just game mechanics. But in this world, Rucao was a rookie Felyne, as evident from his simple leather armor. A novice like him stood little chance of outrunning Nargacuga.
"Run, you!" Su Yi activated a Poké Ball, enlarging it to fist-size, and hurled it toward Nargacuga.
Nargacuga, wary of the approaching object, instinctively swiped at it with its claw. But the moment it made contact—click!—the Poké Ball opened, releasing a beam of white light that enveloped the beast and sucked it inside.
Of course, Su Yi wasn't naïve enough to think he could capture Nargacuga in one try.
"W-What just happened, meow?!" Rucao yelped in shock as Nargacuga vanished.
"No time to explain. Rucao, do you trust me?" Su Yi pulled out another Poké Ball. Who better to be his first companion than a Felyne?
Click! The Poké Ball containing Nargacuga suddenly shook violently.
"Su Yi?" The Felyne was confused.
Su Yi gave a wry smile before looking at him with determined eyes. "I may be a terrible hunter right now, but I want to get stronger. Will you help me? Will you be my partner?"
"I will help you!" Rucao saw the sincerity and hope in Su Yi's gaze and nodded firmly.
"Then don't resist—come inside the Poké Ball. Let's become partners, aibo!" Su Yi extended the Poké Ball toward the Felyne.
"Partner? Alright!" Without hesitation, the cat placed his paw on the button. Click! The Poké Ball absorbed Rucao inside.
Boom!
At that moment, the Poké Ball containing Nargacuga suddenly burst open. The beast roared furiously, shaking its head before locking its gaze onto Su Yi.
[Mission complete. Reward has been added to inventory. Return immediately or continue exploring?]
"If I survive this, I swear I'll capture you!" Su Yi, battered and bloodied, grinned as he clutched the Poké Ball that no longer shook.
ROAR! Furious at its prey's defiance, Nargacuga spread its bladed wings and lunged at him with deadly speed.
"Return!" Su Yi shouted.
Whoosh!
Just as the bladed wings were about to cleave him in two, Su Yi vanished in a flash of light.
Grr?
Nargacuga froze, bewildered. It scanned its surroundings, sniffing the air—nothing. No prey in sight. After a brief moment of tension, it cautiously retreated into the forest.
"Wait, this is still a forest?!"
The instant Su Yi selected "return," his vision blurred. When he regained his footing, he found himself standing on solid ground again—but instead of a camp or a base, he was still surrounded by trees. There was no sign of Nargacuga, which meant he had been transported somewhere else.
"I swear, if another monster jumps out at me—" The still-shaken Su Yi tensed up again, hyper-alert to his surroundings.
Click!
The Poké Ball in his hand opened, releasing Rucao, who landed on the ground, gripping his bone dagger tightly.
"Su Yi!"
"I'm here! Don't panic—we're safe for now!" Seeing the anxious Felyne, Su Yi quickly reassured him.
Rucao scanned the area, confirming there were no monsters nearby. He let out a sigh of relief.
"That was amazing, meow! How did you escape, meow?" The Felyne looked at him with admiration.
Su Yi scratched his head awkwardly. "Just lucky, I guess. If I had bet wrong, I'd be dead by now. And I have no idea where we are now."
As he spoke, he realized just how much he had gambled. If the "return" function hadn't worked instantly, he would've been shredded by Nargacuga. Fortunately, this mysterious ability seemed reliable—at least for now.
"If this is the Ancient Forest, I can figure out where we are, meow."
Rucao pulled out a compass and looked around for the Ancient Forest's most distinct landmark—the massive, towering tree at its center.
But there was nothing. The sky was blue, the trees were much smaller than the ones in the Ancient Forest, and the iconic colossal tree was nowhere to be found.
"Su Yi, where are we, meow?!" Rucao was suddenly at a loss.
"I have no idea either," Su Yi replied, scanning their surroundings for clues—until his eyes landed on a peculiar creature peeking at him from behind a tree.
"Ah?!" Su Yi gasped—not because the creature was bizarre, but because he recognized it all too well!
"What's wrong, meow?! A monster?!" Rucao followed his gaze and saw a round, pink creature standing behind a tree, peeking curiously at them with small, beady eyes.
It was unlike anything he had ever seen, its appearance completely different from any monster he knew.
"Chansey?! A Pokémon?! What kind of world am I in? Wait—am I even in the Monster Hunter world anymore?! Did 'return' send me to the Pokémon world instead?!" Su Yi's mind spun.
"This ability... is it a Pokémon system in the Monster Hunter world? Or a Monster Hunter system in the Pokémon world? Or... is it both?"
He unhooked a book from his belt. The cover featured the symbol of the Fifth Fleet from Monster Hunter, confirming his connection to that world. But the Poké Balls in his hand were undeniably from Pokémon.
"Monster Hunter's New World? The Pokémon world? This is—this is a dream crossover!" Su Yi's excitement skyrocketed.
He had always been a massive fan of both Monster Hunter and Pokémon. Now that the two worlds were merging, the possibilities were endless!
"Chansey?"
The Chansey stepped forward hesitantly, looking at him with concern.
"Su Yi, you're bleeding a lot, meow!" Rucao turned to him—his eyes widening in alarm. A large pool of blood had spread beneath him. The Nargacuga's tail spines had left a deep, slashing wound on his back.
Before, his adrenaline had dulled the pain, but now that he was calming down, the full force of his injuries hit him.
"Ugh, I feel dizzy..." His vision blurred as he swayed—then collapsed.
"Chansey!"
"Su Yi!"
