Chapter 272: Chapter 269
"Whoosh, whoosh..."
Karl leaned back against the withered tree, panting heavily, his face pale, his eyes fixed on the forest behind him. When he didn't see any movement, he finally relaxed and exhaled in relief.
"Whoosh... My lord, they haven't caught up yet," The fox beastkin gasped, leaning against a tree, his eyes warily scanning the surroundings. They had been on the run for 5 days, constantly being pursued.
"These human bastards, they really are just as relentless as the dog beastkins, chasing us down without stopping," Karl cursed, "And there's no meat or bones to gnaw on, yet they're still chasing us so desperately."
"Uh..." The fox beastkin was stunned for a moment, his eyes filled with a strange expression as he muttered, "My lord, you are also the dog beastkin."
He was wondering if his lord was losing his mind, as it almost seemed like Karl was insulting himself.
"Slap!"
Without raising his head, Karl slapped the fox beastkin on the back of the head, irritated. "You talk too much."
"..." The fox beastkin rolled his eyes. What did he say wrong? He awkwardly sat down to rest.
"Damn it, these people are truly persistent," Karl slowly slid down to sit against the withered tree, his pupils filled with lingering fear.
For the past 5 days, the humans had been relentlessly pursuing them. Every time they thought they had shaken them off, they would be back on their trail soon after. It seemed like they wouldn't stop until they were dead.
"My lord, it seems that the treasure map is real. Otherwise, the Swiftwind Organisation wouldn't have tried to kill us to silence us," The fox beastkin said with concern. "We failed the mission. Do you think His Highness will punish us when we return?"
"..." Karl's breath hitched for a moment before he steadied himself and spoke in a deep voice, "Don't worry. As long as we bring back the information, it's a merit. His Highness won't punish us."
He wasn't entirely sure, though. Prince Santner had been acting more urgently in the last year or two, resorting to all means to get things done. Many beastkins had already been executed, like those slave beastkins outside Blade City—mere pawns used to cover up the prince's movements.
"My lord, eat something. They'll catch up again soon." The fox beastkin pulled out a piece of tough, raw meat from his pouch and handed it to Karl.
It was from a wild rabbit they had encountered a day ago while fleeing. The two of them had been subsisting on this raw rabbit meat to make it this far.
Crack, crack…
Karl took the meat, chewing it with loud crunching sounds. The meat was frozen solid in the cold winter, so he could only hold it in his mouth and let it thaw slowly.
Sigh Karl sighed, biting down on the raw meat. He found himself missing the delicious food from the Drunken Night Restaurant. Once he returned to Blade City, he planned to convince His Highness to take down Sedona City first, and then have the chefs prepare him a full day of exquisite dishes.
Clang, clang!
After resting for more than ten minutes, both Karl and the fox beastkin immediately heard the sound of metal clashing in the distance. They quickly jumped to their feet, turning to look toward the distant trees that were swaying.
"Damn it, they've caught up again, and this time there are more of them," Karl's expression changed as he estimated that at least a hundred people were coming, judging by the shaking trees.
"My lord, could it be the main force of the Swiftwind Organisation?" The fox beastkin asked, his face pale.
"Let's go. Blade City is just one more day away. We can hold on a little longer."
Karl spoke seriously, looking up at the sky to check the direction, before motioning for the fox beastkin to follow him. The two of them quickly resumed their escape.
Five minutes later, the eight members of Chris's team were slowly making their way forward, each dressed in thick animal pelts, carrying backpacks, and holding a combat shovel in hand. They would occasionally use the shovels to tap against trees, camouflaging the sound of armor clanking.
Chris pulled the burlap cloth from around his face, reached into his inner pocket, and took out a ceramic bottle. He removed the oak stopper, took a small sip, and immediately wrinkled his face.
Huff... Chris exhaled deeply, then replaced the oak stopper and tucked the ceramic bottle back into his clothes.
"Captain, this strong liquor is really something, just a sip and it makes me feel so warm," Said number two, also taking a sip.
"Don't drink too much. If you get drunk, you'll just stay behind to feed the beasts," Chris replied sternly.
"Yes, Captain!"
They all understood the importance of this mission. Otherwise, the city lord wouldn't have provided them with so many supplies.
Take the combat shovels they were carrying, for example. They were experimental models, and in order to prepare for this mission, they had been rushed over the night before departure.
And that strong liquor, too — it was reportedly something Miss Nicole had ordered to be made overnight, finished around four in the morning.
Each of these supplies was incredibly valuable, which was why they couldn't afford to be careless.
"Let's go, these two sure know how to run," Chris waved his hand and started chasing after them. Along the way, they had intentionally slowed their pace, allowing the other two to rest occasionally.
"Probably tomorrow, we'll reach our destination," Number two put the ceramic bottle away.
Clink, clink!
"I wonder if deputy Aiden will arrive on time," Number five struck a tree with his shovel.
"They should arrive before us. Don't forget, they're taking the water route," Chris said casually.
"Uh..." The others fell silent!
The War Wolves were closing in again, occasionally threatening Karl and his companion.
….
They had been chasing for another two hours, and the sky started to darken.
"Alright, here's good enough. Don't chase anymore."
Chris put away his binoculars. He saw that Karl and his companion had found a cave, so he decided to stop. If they kept chasing, those two would freeze to death by nightfall, and the mission would fail.
"Start digging the snow cave!" Chris ordered.
"Yes!"
Number two and the others selected a spot with thick snow and began digging the snow cave. This would be their sleeping place for the night. The concept was taught to them by the city lord.
At first, they didn't believe that a snow cave could provide warmth. But after trying it, they found it actually worked. It was at least much warmer inside than outside.
The snow cave worked by utilizing the principle that the temperature inside the snow is higher than outside. First, it provides protection from the wind. Second, snow is a natural insulator, similar to down feathers in jackets. It has many gaps filled with air, which is a poor conductor of heat. As a result, the heat generated by people inside the snow cave is retained.
Chris used a shovel as a pot. He took a bottle of alcohol from his backpack, lit it, and placed it under the shovel. Then, he scooped up some snow and melted it to boil. After that, he added several blocks of compressed military rations and opened a packet of dehydrated vegetables to pour in.
A few minutes later, a shovel full of compressed military meals was ready. After boiling it three times, the entire War Wolves was finally full.
The steaming hot dinner drove away the cold and fatigue they had felt all day, ensuring they would get a good night's rest to face the challenges awaiting them the next day.
