My years as a superhero in Marvel

Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Angry Spider

"Thank you, Jason. Peter said that if it weren't for you, Ben would probably be in trouble this time," Aunt May said to Jason with tears in her eyes.

"Aunt May, it's okay. Don't get too excited," Jason comforted her. Jason had already called home and informed his family of Uncle Ben's situation. He was now accompanying Aunt May and Peter outside the hospital's operating room.

Peter was still mumbling and blaming himself. Earlier, the police had come and shown the three of them a portrait of the murderer. Peter recognized at a glance that the criminal who had hurt his uncle was the middle-aged man he had let go.

He clearly had the ability to stop him easily, but because of his own fault, he had let the man hurt Uncle Ben. Uncle Ben was now receiving treatment in the operating room. Thinking of this, Peter felt as if his heart was burning with guilt.

After the operation, a nurse came out to inform the three of them. "Luckily, the bullet did not hit any internal organs but only broke two ribs. The doctor has removed the bullet. The patient will stay in the intensive care unit tonight. When he wakes up tomorrow, he can be transferred to the general ward."

"Thank God!" Aunt May felt much more relaxed after hearing the news. Peter finally felt a little better, though the guilt in his heart remained.

Jason, Peter, and Aunt May stood outside the ICU door, looking through the glass at Ben Parker, who was sleeping soundly. They all felt a sense of relief.

Aunt May was determined not to go home. She wanted to see Uncle Ben wake up the next morning, so Jason and Peter let her rest in the family lounge.

---

"What are you thinking about?" Jason bought two bottles of coffee from the hospital's vending machine, found Peter, who was in a daze in the corridor, and asked.

"Oh~ nothing," Peter replied, taking the coffee Jason handed him but not drinking it.

"I saw the criminal. He was stealing in the convenience store at that time, but I didn't stop him. I clearly had the ability to stop him. If I had caught him then, Uncle Ben wouldn't be in the hospital."

"No one can predict what will happen in the future, so people need to choose every step carefully," Jason said. Since Uncle Ben wasn't dead, the responsibility of being Spider-Man's life mentor now fell on Jason. He had to use his ability to talk nonsense to guide Peter.

"Because every step you take will change the fate of many people," Jason continued, channeling his inner motivational speaker.

"Peter, think about your idol, Captain America. He must have faced many important moments of choice in his life, but he always made the right choice. He knew how much power he had, and with that great power came great responsibility."

"That's why he became a hero. He changed the course of World War II and saved thousands of innocent people." Jason wasn't sure if his words were having any effect. After all, he was just Peter's friend, not Ben Parker. These words might not carry the same weight.

---

The next morning, Ben Parker woke up smoothly. Jason, Peter, and Aunt May finally felt at ease. "Uncle Ben, I'm really sorry. If I hadn't missed the appointment to pick up Aunt May, this wouldn't have happened," Peter said guiltily.

"Silly boy, you're just like your father, working day and night," Uncle Ben comforted him. "And every boy goes through a rebellious phase when he doesn't want to listen to his parents or family. I've been there too."

Uncle Ben's words had some effect, and Peter didn't seem as burdened. At noon, Harry, who had just learned about Uncle Ben being shot, rushed over. For Harry, Uncle Ben was also an important elder.

Having grown up with Peter, Harry had always liked Uncle Ben. Because his father, Norman Osborn, was often busy with work, Uncle Ben had played a fatherly role in Harry's life when he was young.

"Does the police have any clues about the criminal?" Harry asked Jason and the others after visiting Ben Parker.

"No, there's only a sketch of the suspect. I also remember there was a star-shaped mark on the man's left arm. Apart from that, there are no other clues. But no matter where this man runs, I will make him pay the price!" Peter's eyes burned with anger.

12:00 a.m., 30th Block of Brooklyn

This was the most chaotic district in New York, home to a large number of illegal immigrants from Africa and Mexico. A significant portion of the population was low-income or unemployed, roaming the streets all day. Drug dealers were rampant here, and even near government buildings, people were secretly buying and selling cocaine.

The public security here was so bad that even homicides didn't make the news. In other districts, homicides were news, but in Brooklyn, they were a daily occurrence. If there were no homicides in Brooklyn, *that* would be news worth reporting.

"Fuck! Is this all the money you have today?" a white man with blond hair asked a woman who looked like a street prostitute.

"Let go of my hand, you're hurting me," the streetwalker said, shaking off the man's grip.

"Business is bad today, so I don't have much money." She chewed bubble gum and handed the man two hundred dollars.

"I don't believe it!" The man didn't take the money but instead reached into the woman's bag, clearly intending to rob her.

"What are you doing! This is my money!" the woman protested anxiously as her bag was snatched.

"Let go of that lady's purse, you bastard!" A strange man wearing sunglasses and a mask appeared out of nowhere.

"Who are you? A new Mexican wrestler?" the white man sneered, pulling out a switchblade. "You may not know the rules of Brooklyn yet!"

With that, the white man lunged at the masked man with the knife. But the masked man reacted quickly, dodging the attack and delivering a powerful punch to the man's abdomen.

"Ugh~~" The white man collapsed to the ground, clutching his stomach and retching. The masked man lifted the man's left sleeve, checking for a star-shaped mark. It wasn't the person he was looking for.

The prostitute, seeing the white man knocked down, ran to a nearby bar for help. A group of burly men rushed out, clearly associates of the man.

The masked man, realizing the situation was turning dangerous, quickly fled. This masked man was Peter Parker, who had been tracking the murderer who shot his uncle.

But finding one man in a city of 25 million was like searching for a needle in a haystack. Peter had been wearing a ridiculous mask and sunglasses, using this clumsy method to search for days. Unbeknownst to him, Jason had been following him, dressed as night walker.

Jason had been observing Peter for days, watching him search for the murderer as if to vent his anger. Sometimes, Peter would beat up suspects for no apparent reason. Fortunately, he managed to control his strength; otherwise, with Spider-Man's power, a single punch could kill an ordinary person.

In Jason's opinion, Peter wasn't really searching for the murderer. He was just trying to vent his guilt. The unlucky ones were those who vaguely resembled the criminal from that day. Now, another unlucky man had appeared.

It was another white man with blond hair, who had just bought a few bottles of beer from a convenience store and was heading home. Suddenly, a masked man jumped out from the shadows.

The masked man didn't say a word but checked the man's left arm. This action startled the man, but the masked man simply left after confirming it wasn't the person he was looking for.

Jason, watching from the shadows, shook his head. If Spider-Man continued down this path, it would be a miracle if he didn't become the Black Spider instead of the hero he was meant to be.

Peter found nothing again that day. He wanted to find the criminal to avenge his uncle, but New York was too vast for one person to locate a single criminal among 25 million people.

Peter was about to go home after climbing over a low wall when a hoarse voice called out from behind him.

"Are you looking for me?" A man wearing a gray hoodie, his face obscured, appeared not far behind. He raised his left arm, revealing a star-shaped mark.

Peter Parker's pupils contracted violently.
