Chapter 22: Chapter 22: There Are No Born Heroes
"Hi~ Good morning, Peter." In the cross-species genetics laboratory of the Osborn Group, Gwen gently greeted Peter, who had just arrived at the company.
"Hi Gwen, good morning," Peter replied with a smile.
The past half-month had been the proudest time of Peter's life.
He felt like a fish in water in the Osborn Group's laboratory. Not only had he gained the attention of the lab leader, Dr. Connors, with his decay rate algorithm, but he had also met the goddess of his life, Gwen Stacy. She didn't seem to dislike him and even invited him to dinner at her home next week. This was great news for him, as it meant Gwen accepted him.
"Peter, come to the central control computer lab. We need to find a way to break through the theoretical success rate to 75% today, otherwise, we won't be able to conduct live experiments," Dr. Connors called out as soon as he saw Peter walk into the lab. Dr. Connors seemed a little impatient.
"If we can't conduct live experiments, we won't be able to get more data."
"Okay, Doctor. I'll be there right away. Please wait a moment while I take a call," Peter said apologetically as his phone rang.
"Peter, old George is injured today. I have to take his shift, so I won't be able to pick up your Aunt May from work in the evening. Please help me take her home," the caller was Ben Parker, Peter's uncle.
"Oh, okay, Uncle Ben. I've got it. I have to start working here now, so I'll hang up first," Peter replied, worried about today's research topic, and hurriedly ended the call.
"No, the gene chain is still in an endless loop!" Dr. Connors said wearily in the central control computer lab. This was the ninth simulation test today, but the success rate was still not optimistic.
Peter was so absorbed in his work that he forgot everything else.
The phone rang again, and Dr. Connors looked at Peter's pocket, asking, "Are you going to answer it?"
"No," Peter shook his head. The experiment had reached a critical stage, and he had no time to care about other things.
"What if we remove this Y chromosome and replace it with an X?" Peter suddenly had an idea and started inputting the experimental parameters. "Yes! That's it, Doctor, you see it!"
The results of the computational simulation experiment showed that the test subject accepted the new DNA chain, and his vital signs were intact. Peter and Dr. Connors were thrilled with the results. Peter's experiment was successful, but he had forgotten one important thing.

At night, in the 10th block of Queens, Jason's food truck was parked in front of a butcher shop called Big Guy.
The food truck's business had been booming these days, and all the sausages made earlier had been sold out. Jason now needed to import some meat to prepare for making new sausages and hamburgers. The sausages were made in the back kitchen of his grandfather's restaurant, MR LI.
After settling the payment with the owner of Big Butcher Shop, Jason was about to drive away when he saw an acquaintance from afar—Peter Parker.
Peter looked unhappy and walked listlessly. Jason got out of the car and prepared to greet Peter, wondering if he had quarreled with Gwen.
Peter wasn't quarreling with Gwen, of course, but with his uncle, Ben Parker. Because Uncle Ben had to work overtime that day, Peter was supposed to pick up Aunt May from work. But Peter had been so focused on the experiment that he had forgotten about it. Although he was a little scared
—what if Aunt May encountered danger on her way home at night? After all, New York wasn't very safe at night, especially when crossing two neighborhoods with poor security.
Uncle Ben took this opportunity to lecture Peter. Peter, now an adult with his own ideas, felt that many of Uncle Ben's thoughts were outdated.
Especially when Uncle Ben mentioned Peter's father, it made him even sadder. This era was no longer the same as before, and people weren't as easy to approach as they used to be. Even among neighbors, relationships were rarely as close as they were 20 years ago. This was no longer an era where good people were rewarded.
Peter spoke his mind, had a big fight with Uncle Ben, and was now running away from home. Even though Peter Parker had always been a good boy, he still had a rebellious streak in his youth.
---
"I said this bottle of coffee costs $2.70," the fat salesperson in the convenience store said impatiently, looking at the crumpled banknotes in front of him.
Peter only had $2.50 on him and was still 20 cents short. He took out 20 cents from the coin box prepared by the convenience store to pay the bill.
"Boy, don't you know English? It says here that you need to spend more than $10 to use the cents in the coin box!" The fat salesperson threw the 20 cents back into the coin box without thinking.
"If you don't have money, please don't stop the customers behind you from checking out."
Peter felt terrible. The sense of accomplishment from the successful experiment earlier was gone. "My experiment will change the world! But I can't even afford a $2.70 coffee!" Peter thought indignantly.
Behind Peter, a middle-aged white man with shoulder-length blond hair and big sunglasses came to the counter with a can of beer to pay the bill. Just as the clerk was about to collect the money and give the change, the man accidentally bumped into the candy shelf on the counter.
"Hey, man, can you be more careful?" the fat clerk said to the white man. He had no choice but to pick up the knocked-over shelf and candy first.
At this moment, the white man reached into the register on the counter and took out all the banknotes. Peter saw all this but did nothing to stop him.
"This clerk should be taught a lesson!" Peter thought.
The man saw that Peter neither stopped his theft nor reminded the clerk. He nodded to Peter, threw the bottle of coffee Peter had wanted to buy to him, and then quickly fled from another exit of the convenience store.
---
"Hi~ Peter, why are you still here so late? If you don't go home, your Aunt May and Uncle Ben will be worried. Did you have a fight with Gwen?" Jason asked as he walked towards Peter.
"Hey Jason, nothing, I just want to go out for a walk and get some fresh air," Peter lied. At that moment, the fat clerk ran out of the convenience store, panting, and came to Peter's side.
"Why didn't you stop him just now! Or why didn't you remind me!" the fat clerk questioned Peter.
"Brother, what does that have to do with me?" Peter shrugged and said indifferently.
The fat clerk was trying to catch up with the fleeing white man. "What? What were you talking about?" Jason was confused by their conversation.
"His store was just robbed, but that's none of my business," Peter replied with an indifferent tone. He was in a bad mood today and just wanted to see someone get into trouble.
"Theft? Oh~ Damn~! Damn~! Damn~!" Jason suddenly thought of something and shouted excitedly.
This scene felt so familiar
—wasn't this the moment when Peter let the thief go, and then Uncle Ben stepped forward to stop him, only to be shot dead by the criminal?
Jason had been so busy with his food truck and the Stanich family affairs that he had forgotten about this crucial event, which he should have paid attention to the moment he learned Peter had acquired Spider-Man's abilities.
Ben Parker was a good man. Jason had always found him friendly since their first meeting. He was always willing to help others and treated Jason and Harry, two of Peter's good friends, like his own younger generations.
After two years of contact, Uncle Ben had become one of Jason's most respected people. He and Aunt May were both kind-hearted. Without their careful upbringing, Peter Parker, who had lost his parents at a young age, might have turned out very differently.
How could such a person die? Jason still remembered that not long after meeting Peter, he had set a goal: to save Ben Parker. Uncle Ben shouldn't die at the hands of a thief!
Peter was startled by Jason's sudden shouting. He was afraid something might be wrong with his friend.
At that moment, Jason had no intention of explaining anything to Peter. He quickly scanned the street, remembering that the place where Uncle Ben was killed wasn't far from Peter.
"I see!" Jason growled as he spotted Uncle Ben wrestling with a blond middle-aged white man.
Jason's sharp eyes had already seen the man pull out a black pistol. Without hesitation, Jason sprinted toward Uncle Ben. When he was only thirty meters away, Jason took out his newly bought smartphone and threw it at the man using the technique of throwing a hidden weapon.
However, a cell phone wasn't a hidden weapon like a flying knife. Jason had intended to knock the gun out of the man's hand, but it deviated slightly and hit the man's head instead.
Bang!
As Uncle Ben and the man struggled, the man's pistol fired. Uncle Ben could no longer hold on and fell limply to the ground.
Jason rushed to Uncle Ben's side, no longer caring about the thief who had escaped. He tore open Uncle Ben's clothes to reveal the gunshot wound.
It wasn't until he heard the gunshot that Peter realized what had happened. He saw the familiar figure—it was his uncle, and he had been shot!
"Oh~ No~ No~!" Peter ran to Ben Parker as fast as he could, groaning weakly at the sight of Uncle Ben's bleeding wound.
"It's all my fault~! It's all my fault!"
"Don't just stand there! Hurry up and drive my car over here!" Jason yelled at Peter, tossing him the car keys. At the same time, Jason took out the quick hemostatic spray and trauma bandage awarded by the system.
Jason used nearly one-third of the quick-stop hemostatic spray to stop the bleeding from Uncle Ben's wound. By then, Peter had already driven Jason's fast-food truck to the side.
"Peter, come here! Help me hold Uncle Ben's back. I need to bandage him!" Jason called Peter over to assist.
With their cooperation, Uncle Ben's gunshot wound was quickly bandaged with gauze, preventing further bleeding and providing some stability to avoid secondary injuries.
Jason and Peter carried Uncle Ben into the car. Jason drove the truck while Peter took care of Uncle Ben in the back.

[System Notification: The host has changed Ben Parker's fate, which will affect the growth of Spider-Man Peter Parker. The system issues an emergency task. Please confirm, host.]
Task: There Are No Born Heroes
Peter Parker, who gained the power of Spider-Man, did not realize the responsibility that came with his abilities. It was not until Ben Parker's death that he understood the meaning of "with great power comes great responsibility." If Ben Parker hadn't died, would there still be a Spider-Man Peter Parker? The host's mission is to guide Peter Parker on the path to becoming Spider-Man.
Reward: A random X-gene.
Jason looked at the task and breathed a sigh of relief, but at the same time, he felt annoyed. He was relieved that Uncle Ben wouldn't die, but he was annoyed that he would now have to train Spider-Man himself.
