Chapter 119: The Farewell (119)
The sun cast its golden glow over the small town, illuminating the familiar streets and rooftops where countless memories had been made. The air carried the scent of blooming summer flowers, and the cicadas hummed their endless song, as if bidding them farewell. Today was the day—Haruto and Aiko were leaving their hometown behind to step into a new chapter of their lives in Tokyo.
The morning was filled with a quiet kind of anticipation. Haruto stood in his bedroom, staring at the half-packed suitcase on his bed. His school uniform, now neatly folded away, felt like a relic of the past. The walls of his room, once filled with posters and sketches, were now bare, making the reality of his departure sink in even deeper.
Aiko, on the other hand, sat on the floor of her bedroom, her fingers tracing the strokes of an old painting she had made years ago—one of their childhood playground beneath the cherry blossom tree. She had always dreamed of painting the world beyond their town, and now, that dream was becoming real. Yet, her heart ached at the thought of leaving behind the places that had shaped her.
They had spent the last few weeks visiting all their favorite spots—the quiet bookstore where they spent countless afternoons, the small café near school where Haruto always ordered too much food, and, most importantly, the hill with the lone cherry blossom tree where their friendship had blossomed into something more.
Now, it was time to say goodbye.
Haruto and Aiko met at the train station, their suitcases in hand, their hearts heavy yet hopeful. Their families stood beside them, offering words of encouragement and last-minute advice. Aiko's mother wiped a tear from her eye, while Haruto's father patted him firmly on the back.
"You'll do great things, Haruto," his father said with a proud smile. "Just don't forget where you came from."
Haruto nodded. "I won't, Dad."
Aiko's mother turned to her. "Call often, okay? And don't overwork yourself. Tokyo is big, but you'll always have a home here."
Aiko smiled softly. "I know, Mom. I'll visit whenever I can."
Their friends had also gathered to see them off, laughing and reminiscing about old times. Mei, Aiko's closest friend, pulled her into a tight hug. "I still can't believe you're actually leaving," she murmured. "Tokyo better treat you well, or I'm coming to get you."
Aiko chuckled. "You're always welcome."
Kenji, one of Haruto's childhood friends, clapped him on the back. "Don't forget us when you become a big-shot astronomer in Tokyo."
Haruto grinned. "As if I could. You guys are stuck with me for life."
The moment of departure drew closer. The train rolled into the station, its doors sliding open with a mechanical hum. The finality of it all settled in their chests like a heavy weight.
Haruto turned to Aiko, who met his gaze with an understanding smile. They had talked about this moment many times, yet now that it was here, words felt unnecessary. Instead, Haruto reached for her hand, intertwining his fingers with hers. "Are you ready?" he asked softly.
Aiko squeezed his hand in return. "As long as we're together."
They took a deep breath, stepping onto the train as their families and friends waved goodbye. The doors closed with a quiet hiss, and the train slowly began to move. Haruto and Aiko stood by the window, watching as their hometown—the place that had witnessed their childhood, their dreams, and their love—faded into the distance.
Aiko sighed, resting her head on Haruto's shoulder. "It feels surreal," she admitted. "Leaving everything behind."
Haruto nodded. "I know. But we'll make new memories in Tokyo. And this town... it will always be a part of us."
Aiko smiled, her eyes shimmering with a mixture of sadness and excitement. "Promise me something?"
"Anything."
"No matter how busy life gets, let's always come back here together—at least once a year."
Haruto looked at her, then at the rapidly disappearing landscape of their hometown. He lifted their intertwined hands and pressed a soft kiss to her fingers. "I promise."
The train sped toward Tokyo, carrying their dreams, their love, and the promise of a future they would build together.
