Chapter 6: The portal

In front of me stood my enchanting table, an essential tool for upgrading all my gear and finally progressing, going further.

"Now, time for real magic…" I murmured, taking the crafting table from my inventory.

I placed the table in a strategic corner of my house and immediately set my armor and tools upon it.

I had experience to spend, and I intended to make the most of it. With a confident gesture, I placed my diamond helmet on the table, along with a few pieces of lapis lazuli. A bluish glow danced across the metal, and an enchantment appeared before my eyes.

Protection I. Perfect

I repeated the process with my leggings and boots, getting the same enchantment. Then came the chestplate… Protection II. A satisfied smile stretched across my face. My armor was ready to take some hits.

But I wasn't done yet. I then placed my diamond pickaxe on the enchanting table. Mysterious letters floated around it, and after a brief hesitation, I made my choice. Efficiency II, Unbreaking I. A great start.

Finally, my diamond sword. A shiver ran through me as I watched it charge with magic. Sharpness I. I twirled the weapon in my hand. It wasn't the most powerful enchantment, but it was already a decent advantage in combat.

I straightened up, contemplating my freshly enchanted gear. A deep sense of satisfaction filled me. I was ready to face even greater dangers… but before that, one question lingered. Where should I place my Nether portal?

A chill ran down my spine at the thought. This portal wouldn't just lead to another place… but to a hostile world, with demonic creatures and unpredictable dangers. Especially if I planned to place portals leading to other worlds later. The Nether itself wouldn't be too much of a problem, but the other worlds? What if I brought back monsters, enemies… or even gods?

Precautions were necessary, and for that, I had to plan properly.

I crossed my arms, thinking. The best solution was to isolate the portal. To bury it. To seal it inside a secure underground chamber, controlled and protected.

"I need a room... fully secured and trapped with dispensers, probably dispensing lava into a corridor to trap intruders. Iron doors at a minimum, it's all I can craft for now, but at least it's some security. And since I can't make sticky pistons, I'll have to get creative."

I took a deep breath, scanning the area around my house. I needed a place close enough for easy access, but far enough to prevent hostile creatures from escaping and threatening my home.

After a few minutes of exploration, I settled on a slightly elevated terrain, a few dozen blocks from my house. An ideal spot, discreet, neither too far nor too close.

Wasting no time, I drew my freshly enchanted pickaxe and struck the earth, then the stone, with a firm blow. The sensation was exhilarating, the rock shattered much faster than usual, each strike digging deep. Efficiency II might not be the highest level of enchantment, but it was already a huge advantage, and I was finally starting to have gear worthy of the name.

I carved a straight tunnel, gradually descending into the depths. As I advanced, the daylight behind me faded until it disappeared completely.

Only the flickering glow of my torches lit my path. I had, of course, placed ladders along the wall for a quick ascent.

After several minutes, I judged that I was deep enough to begin the main excavation.

I set my pickaxe down for a moment and pulled a piece of coal from my inventory to craft more torches. I had enough resources to ensure proper lighting, besides, I had no intention of running into creepers or other threats while working.

I got back to work, carving out a vast underground chamber, block by block. My goal was clear: a long, high room, a true stone bunker to contain and protect my portal. But the excavation was long and tedious. Even with my enchanted pickaxe, the work took me several hours.

When I finally cleared enough space, I took a moment to observe my work. A massive cube of raw stone took shape before me, its irregular walls marked by pickaxe strokes. It wasn't perfect yet, but the foundation was set.

Now, I had to think about security. Decoration could wait.

I started by laying down blocks to form a long corridor leading to the portal's future location. For the Nether, I wouldn't need as much distance, just being there was enough of a barrier.

This corridor would act as a defensive airlock. If a threat tried to escape, it would have to cross a path far more dangerous than it seemed.

I placed dispensers on either side, already loaded with buckets of lava. A simple activation via a lever at the entrance, triggered as I exited the portal, would unleash a burning flood, making passage impossible.

I quickly tested the mechanism, linking the dispensers to a redstone line leading to the lever at the corridor's entrance.

One click, and lava poured out, illuminating the walls with a reddish glow. A second click, and it retracted into the buckets. Perfect.

Taking a moment to rest, I marveled at the miracle that is redstone.

"It's amazing... it's just dust that I lay down in lines, and a lever or button next to it activates it. Even dispensers, they can place and retrieve lava... I have to admit, this saves me, considering I have zero electricity here."

After grabbing a quick bite to eat, I refined my plan. Initially, I had considered making just a simple secure room, but if someone ever got inside… they wouldn't know where the ladder to the entrance was. I could easily create fake pathways, a sort of labyrinth leading to traps.

Decision made. I was going to spend more time on this project, but it felt necessary.

Next, I added iron doors throughout the path, each linked to an inverted redstone torch system. When the mechanism activated, the doors would lock automatically, making it even harder for an intruder to progress.

Finally, the last touch, a piston system to seal the chamber's main entrance with stone blocks. I had no slimeballs for sticky pistons, but I found a workaround: by placing blocks strategically, I could force the passage to close, making it impossible to reopen from the outside without redstone. More importantly, it would conceal the true entrance.

The next day, I returned to complete my chamber.

I created several false paths, some with wooden doors, others with locked iron doors, and sometimes just open passages leading nowhere.

I spent the whole day crafting these fake corridors, getting lost multiple times in my own maze.

After a final round of testing, everything was in place.

Stepping back, I observed my work with satisfaction. It had taken time, but at least I was protected.

Now, only one task remained, the reason I had built all this in the first place. Building the Nether portal and stepping through it.

But that was for tomorrow.

Letting out a deep breath, I placed my pickaxe in my inventory and climbed back to the surface, the ladder creaking slightly under my weight.

As soon as my feet touched the grass, I exhaled. The air was fresh, a welcome contrast after hours spent underground.

I glanced at the sky. The sun was setting, painting the horizon in shades of orange and pink.

I had earned a break.

I headed toward my house, pushing the door open with a tired but satisfied gesture. The interior welcomed me with the warm glow of torches and the scent of wood.

My stomach growled, I had barely eaten all day, too absorbed in my project. I opened my chest, grabbing a few pieces of cooked steak. The salty, grilled taste was divine. I let out a pleased sigh, eating more than necessary for once.

After finishing my meal, I decided to step outside for some fresh air. I hadn't checked on my chickens recently; they had probably laid some eggs. Grabbing a handful of seeds, I headed toward their enclosure.

I approached them and scattered the feed. The breeding process was strange… I had fed them multiple times, and I already had baby chicks, just like in the game. I wondered if they would grow gradually or all at once. Either way, they were already quite big.

I enjoyed the simplicity of the moment, appreciating the calm and the routine of my little world. After feeding them, I collected the eggs and threw them on the ground. No chicks this time, but it was worth trying, so far, everything had mirrored the game perfectly. I was a living proof of that.

Since I was outside, I might as well make the most of it before the big and dangerous expedition into the Nether.

I walked toward the beach, where the water met the sand with a soft whisper. The sun was low, casting its last golden rays over the sea.

I removed my boots and let my feet sink slightly into the warm sand. The water lapped at the shore, cool and soothing.

Sitting on a rock, I watched the waves dance to the rhythm of the wind. I had started with nothing, a wooden hut, a few stone tools… And soon… yes, soon, I would set out for the Nether.

If I were lying, I'd say I wasn't afraid. But so far, the monsters had been real. The zombies …. actual zombies. The skeletons, too. And let's not even talk about the terrifying creepers and the eerie Endermen.

Ah, the Endermen… that was a whole other story.

And the Nether, my friend… I could die from a fireball, fall into lava, get blown to bits by Blazes… or even anger the Pigmen.

And that's just the beginning. I would prepare as much as possible, but if I got lost or trapped… it would be game over.

Hell… the Nether. They were practically the same thing. So far, everything had been just like the game, but what if it wasn't?

After all, there were massive fortresses there. Was there an ancient civilization? Were they still around? The last thing I needed was to start a war or something.

Yeah… I had a lot of uncertainties. This could very well be my last night here… the last time I looked at this beautiful landscape.

The sound of the waves, the ocean breeze, the feeling of sand between my fingers… all of it calmed me. I felt at peace here.

After a long while, I stood up, stretched, and dusted off my shorts.

"Ugh… that felt good. But I've got no reason to mope, I'll make it through. And after that? I'll build that damn castle! I want a grand kingdom all to myself, mwahahaha!" I joked to myself.

Slowly, I started heading back, lost in thought. The night was falling gently, stars beginning to shimmer in the dark sky. I opened my door, let out one last sigh, and stored my gear in a chest.

Tomorrow, I would build the portal.

But for now, I just needed rest.

It was time.

It was now or never.

"Come on, Urek! Stay strong !" I urged myself, slapping my cheeks.

Taking a deep breath, I equipped my shield and sword. My face was tense, my body rigid.

Then, I took the step forward, my foot passed through the portal, then my body.

To a new destination.

An adventure that could very well be my last.

Into the Nether.
