Chapter 11: Attacked
Kai Vale waited until nightfall, went out alone, and tried to lure out the person who had been following him.
Sure enough, before Kai had walked far, he was stopped by several gangsters wearing black leather jackets, tattoos covering their arms.
"Boy, you've been causing trouble for us lately. Now that we've got you, you better be ready for our 'care.' By the way, the King of the Underground wants you to know your place — don't mess with us again."
One of them cracked his knuckles, clearly about to attack.
Kai originally thought about sending a message to Kingpin to warn him off, but hearing their tone changed his mind. He decided to let these gangsters sleep underground instead.
In an instant, the gangsters surrounding Kai vanished from sight. The remaining thugs on the outskirts froze, stunned and too afraid to move forward.
"Go back and tell your boss not to mess with me again," Kai warned. "If I get angry, the consequences won't be pretty."
He turned and walked away, leaving the terrified gangsters behind.
Unfortunately, Kai didn't know that the thugs he'd warned couldn't even reach Kingpin directly. His message only made its way to the leaders of various small gangs — and then stopped.
As Kai continued to deal with more gangsters who tried to confront him in the following days, word eventually reached Kingpin himself.
Meanwhile, despite the gangsters choosing areas without surveillance cameras, SHIELD agents monitoring Kai still noticed the pattern — Kai would return home safely, while the gangsters would simply vanish without a trace.
The unusual circumstances caught Nick Fury's attention. After reviewing the reports, Fury suspected Kai had some kind of special ability — one that could erase people without leaving evidence. Fury believed Kai could be a valuable asset for SHIELD and ordered increased surveillance to track Kai's movements.
After yet another group of thugs tried to jump him, Kai had enough.
"It seems Kingpin didn't get my warning," Kai muttered. "If that's the case, I'll tell him directly. If he still doesn't listen... well, he'll sleep underground too."
Kai went to see Matt and explained the situation. He didn't want to constantly be targeted by these low-level criminals. While Kai himself wasn't in danger, his family and friends were — and he wasn't willing to risk their safety.
Matt, frustrated by Kingpin's recent actions as well, agreed to team up with Kai. The two decided to confront Kingpin directly.
At the Fisk Building...
Boom!
Kingpin slammed his fist down, splitting his desk in half.
"Useless!" he roared. "So many gangs couldn't catch one kid, and more people keep disappearing! Now they're telling me because they can't cover it up anymore?!"
Turning to the man beside him — a sharp-eyed figure with a target tattoo on his forehead — Kingpin growled, "Since they're useless, *you* go deal with that brat."
"Yes, boss," Bullseye replied with a twisted grin before leaving.
Later, as Kai and Matt drove toward Fisk Tower, Kai spoke.
"When we get there, I'll need you to create a distraction while I find Kingpin. Hopefully, I can get through to him."
Just as Kai finished speaking, a man appeared in the middle of the road, pointing a gun directly at their car.
"Get down!" Kai shouted, jerking the wheel hard. The bullet slammed into the car's side.
"That guy's no ordinary thug," Kai muttered as they stopped.
Kai recognized Bullseye's target tattoo. "Matt, hide. This one's dangerous."
Matt took cover while Kai teleported behind Bullseye, hoping to grab him. But Bullseye rolled away the moment Kai vanished.
Now aware of Kai's abilities, Bullseye kept his eyes locked on him. Every time Kai tried to teleport, Bullseye dodged, staying one step ahead.
Hearing the scuffle, Matt emerged from his hiding spot, attempting to draw Bullseye's attention. Bullseye turned and hurled a dart directly at Matt.
Seeing his chance, Kai abandoned subtlety and teleported straight to Bullseye, slicing through him before the dart could hit Matt.
Kai rushed to check on Matt and found a dart stuck in his back.
Without hesitation, Kai teleported Matt to a familiar clinic in Hell's Kitchen.
"Old Jack, Matt's hurt. Help him out."
Old Jack — a trusted but unlicensed doctor who patched up gangsters and vigilantes alike — examined Matt's wound.
"It's nothing serious," Jack reassured Kai after bandaging Matt. "Just make sure to change the dressing in a couple of days."
Kai made sure Matt was comfortable at home before heading out.
On his way back, Kai called Gear.
"Gear, clear all the security footage from tonight. No one can know what happened."
