JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Horizons

Chapter 23: Chapter 20: Abyss Waltz

---

Prologue: The Shadow Approaches

The battle with Ayaka was over. The flames had died, the smoke had begun to clear, but the city was still scarred. The air smelled of ash and molten concrete, and the streets were littered with the remains of collapsed buildings.

Akira stood over Ayaka's unconscious body, his breathing heavy. His Stand, Echo Chamber, flickered in and out of existence beside him, its sound-based resonance still subtly disturbing the silence.

Kenji wiped soot from his brow, his body still radiating heat from the battle. "Damn... that was rough."

Hiroshi slid his katana back into its sheath. "She wasn't playing around."

Daisuke leaned against a scorched lamppost, trying to catch his breath. "No. But she wasn't trying to kill us either. Not completely."

Akira's eyes narrowed. That fact had been bothering him too. Ayaka could have gone for the kill multiple times—yet she didn't. Instead, she tested them, measured them, pushed them to their limits.

She wasn't their final enemy.

She was a messenger.

And she had delivered her message loud and clear:

"Takashi 'Void' Nakamura is coming."

The very mention of the name sent a ripple through the group.

Mei adjusted her glasses. "I've heard of him before. But only in whispers."

Daisuke exhaled slowly. "Yeah... I have too. They say he's not just an assassin—he's a phantom. A man who shouldn't exist."

Kenji folded his arms. "Well, he exists enough to be coming for us."

Akira's mind was already calculating their next move. If Void Nakamura was their next enemy, then they had little time to rest. The battle against Ayaka had drained them, but they couldn't afford to be caught off guard.

They had to prepare.

They had to survive.

And they had to face the abyss.

Phase One: The Arrival of the Void

It happened faster than any of them expected.

That night, after securing Ayaka, the group retreated to an abandoned warehouse to recover. The air was tense, their exhaustion palpable, but no one dared to let their guard down.

Then—

The temperature dropped.

Not in a natural way, but in an unnatural, suffocating stillness.

Akira felt it first. A strange distortion in the air, like the world had suddenly lost its balance. The distant hum of the city, the faint buzzing of broken streetlights—all vanished in an instant.

Then came the footsteps.

Soft. Slow. Methodical.

A figure emerged from the shadows, stepping into the dim light of the warehouse.

A man, dressed entirely in black, with a long coat that seemed to swallow the light around him. His hair was slicked back, silver streaks cutting through the jet-black strands. His face was cold, expressionless, like a man who had long since abandoned any trace of humanity.

His eyes, however, were the worst part.

They were empty. Hollow.

Like staring into an abyss.

Mei instinctively reached for her wires. Hiroshi's hand tightened around his katana. Daisuke shifted into a ready stance. Kenji stepped forward, already activating Titan Soul.

Akira, however, didn't move.

Because he realized something terrifying.

He hadn't heard him approach.

Even with Echo Chamber's heightened auditory awareness—Void Nakamura made no sound.

It was as if he simply appeared out of nowhere.

The man's voice was quiet. Too quiet.

"...You're slower than I expected," Void said, tilting his head slightly. "Disappointing."

Hiroshi didn't hesitate. He moved first.

In a single fluid motion, he drew his blade and slashed straight at Void's throat.

But—

He cut through nothing.

Void Nakamura had vanished.

Hiroshi's eyes widened—

Then pain exploded in his chest.

Void reappeared behind him, his fingers barely grazing Hiroshi's back—

Yet the force of the impact sent Hiroshi crashing through three concrete pillars before slamming into the far wall.

Blood splattered the floor.

The group barely had time to process what happened before Void spoke again.

"Abyss Waltz."

The air itself warped.

---

Phase Two: The Stand of Emptiness

The battlefield was no longer the same.

The moment Void activated his Stand, the world around them shifted.

The warehouse darkened unnaturally, as if the very concept of light was being drained. The edges of the room blurred, space itself becoming indistinct.

And worst of all—

Sound vanished.

Akira's eyes widened in horror. Echo Chamber's resonance was gone.

Kenji roared and charged forward, but his own battle cry was silent. Even the impact of his fists slamming into the ground made no noise.

It was as if they had been thrown into a void where sound did not exist.

Void Nakamura watched them with a detached gaze, as if observing insects struggling against an invisible cage.

Then, he moved.

He appeared beside Daisuke—

A single touch to the chest, and Daisuke was sent hurtling through the darkness, blood splattering across the floor.

Mei launched her wires, trying to ensnare him—

But they passed through him like he wasn't even there.

Akira gritted his teeth.

Void Nakamura's Stand—Abyss Waltz—wasn't just an ability. It was a phenomenon.

A Stand that erased presence itself.

No sound. No substance. No reaction.

It was like fighting a ghost.

---

Phase Three: Cracking the Silence

Kenji was the only one who could fight back effectively.

His Stand, Titan Soul, was pure physical power. Even without sound, even without spatial awareness, he relied on instinct.

He swung wildly—

And for the first time, Void Nakamura moved to dodge.

Akira noticed it immediately.

"There it is."

Void's ability wasn't perfect.

It nullified sound and presence, but it wasn't absolute. He still needed to physically evade attacks.

That was the key.

Mei picked up on it too. "We don't need to hear him. We just need to corner him."

Akira activated Echo Chamber again.

Even if sound was blocked, his Stand could still disturb the air itself. He focused, sending out a vibrational pulse—not sound, but a pressure wave.

Void Nakamura twitched.

They felt him now.

Kenji grinned. "Got you."

He swung—

And this time, his fist collided with flesh.

CRACK!

Void staggered backward, the first real expression flickering across his face.

It wasn't pain.

It was mild surprise.

"…Interesting."

He glanced at Akira. "You're not as useless as I thought."

Then, he vanished again.

But this time—

Akira knew how to follow him.

Epilogue: The True Purpose

The battle wasn't over.

Void Nakamura wasn't fighting to kill them.

He was testing them.

And as he disappeared into the abyss once more, his final words echoed in Akira's mind:

"The next time we meet… I won't be holding back."
