Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Occlumency
Wade couldn't let his secrets be exposed in front of Queenie.
Those were things that no one in this world could understand.
He didn't want others to think he was crazy, nor did he want anyone to go insane because of his secrets...
God only knew what would happen when Queenie found out that the world they were in was actually fictional in another world.
Of course, it was also possible that magic was real, but it was written as a novel by an author, and then it really became fictional...
Wade stopped his chaotic thoughts. This was not the time to entertain such musings.
He now urgently needed a solution to the problem.
And he only had a day or two at most!
...
After Wade and Tom got off the carriage, Frank Doyle drove off from Godric's Hollow with the Thestral-drawn carriage.
Professor Hicks stayed behind to look after Wade and Tom until Jacob and his family arrived.
Tom, of course, was extremely excited about this, because it meant he had more time to receive one-on-one tutoring from an excellent professor.
Compared to the eager Tom, Wade seemed a bit too leisurely.
After arriving here, he even spent the daytime "napping" on a recliner...
Of course, this was just on the surface...
On the very day they arrived in Godric's Hollow, Wade secretly called Toby over.
He instructed Toby to go to Diagon Alley and buy every book related to the art of Occlumency that could be found in the bookstores.
Then, find a secret, safe place to store them.
Toby, being an experienced house-elf, had no trouble with this task.
When everyone had just finished dinner, Toby returned.
As the evening darkened, Wade proactively mentioned to Professor Hicks that he was tired and wanted to rest early that night.
Professor Hicks naturally didn't think much of it, especially since she still had to deal with the eager Tom.
Once they returned to their room, Wade locked the door and then instructed Toby to use Apparition to take him to the place where the books were stored.
It was a dry cave, the entrance of which Toby had sealed with stones, leaving just enough of a gap for ventilation. It was unclear how Toby had found this place.
Toby had thoughtfully arranged a full set of tables and chairs inside the cave, along with a bundle of candles. The books that had been bought were placed on the large table.
This large pile of books was a mix of new and old, because Toby had even checked second-hand bookstores.
He had practically bought every book available on the art of Occlumency from the market.
At that moment, Wade was extremely grateful to have such an experienced house-elf helping him.
So, starting that very night, after drinking the Invigoration Draught Toby had helped him buy, Wade urgently began his studies on Occlumency!
Learning the basics of Occlumency within a day and two nights and being able to hide his thoughts from Queenie...
Just thinking about it made him feel the chances of success were slim.
Wade himself had little confidence in this, but he could only try his best.
Of course, because the chances of success were so low, he had already quietly prepared a backup plan.
If he didn't manage to learn Occlumency during this time, he would take Toby and leave temporarily...
After all, coming up with a somewhat plausible excuse for leaving later was better than having Queenie directly probe into his secrets.
...
That night, thanks to his powerful memory, Wade had basically memorized the knowledge of Occlumency after going through the books.
To Wade, the so-called Occlumency was like setting a door in one's mind, locking away the memories one wanted to hide behind that door, preventing others from seeing them.
Then, the door was transformed into a screen, continuously playing false memories.
When a Legilimens attempted to probe the memory, they could only see these false memories, unable to peek behind the door to the real ones.
That was Occlumency.
Of course, if the Legilimens was powerful enough, they could still see through the illusion and directly break down the door.
However, Queenie, who passively triggered Legilimency, wouldn't be able to reach that level.
Well... Unless she had a wand and directly used Legilimency on Wade.
According to the books, there were two methods for practicing Occlumency.
The first method was more effective, and it involved finding a trustworthy wizard who would constantly use Legilimency on you.
The first method was designed to stimulate the mind and magical power, helping the magic build resistance against Legilimency.
When the Legilimency magic was detected, the mind would automatically construct a mental barrier, passively building the door.
The whole process was a bit like stimulating the body's immune system.
Compared to the first method, the second method was much slower.
The learner needed to deliberately control their consciousness.
First, they needed to calm their mind, entering a state of tranquility where they thought of nothing.
Next, in that peaceful state, they would add the prepared false memories...
Finally, when the learner could maintain this state at any time, the Occlumency would be mastered.
Since Wade had no trusted wizard to assist him with the practice, he had to choose the second method.
After choosing his practice method, Wade began his meditation exercises, trying hard to achieve a state of a mind free from distractions.
He didn't even have time to check the system's product refresh that night.
Until the next morning, when Toby brought him back, Wade didn't stop his practice.
Tom saw Wade with his eyes closed, lying on the recliner meditating, and thought he was just napping.
Eager to surpass Wade, Tom was naturally pleased to see Wade slacking off. He hoped Wade would stay lazy like this forever!
As for Professor Hicks, she assumed that Wade was just trying to catch up on sleep after not resting well the night before, so she didn't disturb him.
This allowed Wade to continue practicing Occlumency in peace.
This practice was truly difficult. The first step, simply quieting all the distractions, was enough to deter most people.
Wade persisted all night but still couldn't achieve the first step... he couldn't even manage to calm his mind slightly.
In fact, the more thoughts someone had, the harder it was to find peace, because they were always thinking when they were awake...
And Wade was that type of person—his mind couldn't even calm down when he was asleep, so how could he possibly achieve a state of mental clarity while awake?
As time passed, Wade's mind slowly began to settle.
Perhaps, given enough time, he would eventually be able to achieve a state of no distractions.
But now, he no longer had much time...
As the sun began to set, Wade slowly opened his eyes. In the end, he chose to give up.
Tonight, he would quietly take Toby and make a run for it.
As for the reason for leaving... he'd think of something if he got caught.
...
Wade tiredly stood up from the recliner.
At this moment, Professor Hicks was explaining the basics of Transfiguration to the eager Tom.
"...When you transfigure an object, you don't need to consciously imagine all the details of the object you're transforming into..."
"For example, if you want to turn a goblet into a bird, you don't need to visualize every detail of the bird in your mind."
"If you had to imagine every feather's shape, even a simple Transfiguration spell would exhaust you."
"We only need to imagine the general shape of the bird in our mind during the transformation, and leave everything else to the imagination magic. The magic will naturally help the wizard fulfill their intention."
Professor Hicks was covering the basics of Transfiguration, which Wade had already read in The Complete Guide to Transfiguration, but...
"...Everything else is left to the imagination magic..." These words now struck Wade's mind like a thunderclap!
Wade suddenly realized—of course! I'm a wizard, I have magic, and Occlumency is magic! It's not some form of meditation!
I don't need to force myself to clear my mind like a Muggle—this isn't a state that can be reached in a short amount of time! My approach to practice has been wrong from the start!
In fact, as a wizard, all I need to do is leave everything to the imagination magic. The magic will naturally help the wizard fulfill their wishes!
Because magic is inherently idealistic!
With this thought, Wade, who had just stood up, stretched lazily and then lay back down...
