Chapter 1580: Two sides of same coin
Village Head Gu knew what Yu Dong meant by saying such things. She also understood that what Yu Dong was saying was indeed correct, after all, women couldn't protect mers all the time.
If a mer was to learn how to protect himself then it would be much better for his safety. Women also would not have to worry about their mers leaving the house alone.
However, the elders of their village were unwilling to understand this. They strictly refused to let a school get built in the village, no matter what.
One of them even claimed that she would die on the very land where the school was going to be constructed.
"Will it be alright?" Village Head Gu asked with a frown settling on her face. "The elders made quite a lot of noise the last time they even threatened to kill themselves."
"Then let them die," Last time Yu Dong was a tad bit kinder to those idiots and they thought that they could do anything that they wanted.
The reason she backed off was that Yu Dong did not want to attract unnecessary trouble. However, now that she thought about it, it was indeed her mistake, since when did she care about what the old farts say?
If she had built the school by now the mers would know little tricks to protect themselves.
Village Head Gu: "…"
"There is no need to get angry——"
"I am not angry," Yu Dong looked at Village Head Gu as if the latter had gone crazy. Angry? She would not waste her energy and breath on irrelevant things.
With an innocent expression, she said, "I am being honest, if they want to die then let them die. Just ask them which kind of coffin they would like, and I will buy it for them."
This time not only Village Head Gu was stunned. Her husbands were equally stunned.
"This…Is this right?"
"Why is it not right?" Yu Dong asked Village Head Gu. "The elders cannot accept that I am doing something different? Then they first need to hand back all the comfort and money they had made from my different ideas."
"There is no such thing as accepting different ideas when they provide you with comfort and rejecting them when they go against the values that you believe!"
"If you are eager to gobble the sweet delights then you might as well be prepared to sip on bitter drinks. Change is the law of nature."
Yu Dong was not going to pamper anyone.
"If they don't like it then they can go ahead and leave the village. Anyway, I am not forcing anyone to attend the school, if they want to they can attend it. Not to mention, I am teaching the mers for free."
Yu Dong heaved herself up from the chair on which she was sitting and said to Village Head Gu, "Just let the villagers know. If the elders have something to say then let them come and see me."
Village Head Gu smiled. She knew that even if the village elders went to say something to Yu Dong, this woman would simply send them back home crying.
But this did not concern her so she might as well leave the matter in the hands of Yu Dong's hands.
The news about the school being built along with additional bonuses handed to those women who sent their mer husbands and sons to study spread throughout the village.
At once the village exploded. Some of the villagers thought that Yu Dong had gone crazy, if not why would she teach mers to study? If they learn how to read and write wouldn't they dance on top of their heads?
The other half of the villagers were interested in the bonus that Yu Dong spoke of. Did this mean that if they were to send their mers to school they would earn more money?
This money was easy to earn!
And just as Village Head Gu expected the elders started to make a fuss again.
One of the women shouted at the top of her lungs, "If you make a school then you might as well make it on my grave! Are the mers getting a chance to study? Oh dear heavens this is simply stupid! How can mers learn to read and write?"
Yu Dong looked at the woman who was crying and nodded, crossed her arms and then said to her, "Okay. You can choose the spot where you want to be buried, I will dig a grave for you."
The elder who was howling choked and looked at Yu Dong in horror. She ——what was she saying? Your journey continues with My Virtual Library Empire
"Madam Yu, you are being too much! If the mers learn to read and write they will certainly elope!" One of the women said to Yu Dong who smiled.
She leaned against the door frame of her house and questioned, "Was your husband literate?"
"No?" The woman replied before she could stop herself. She did not expect Yu Dong to ask such a question to her and blurted out.
"Then where is your husband?" Yu Dong asked again with a little tilt of her head. "I heard that he ran away six months ago, right?"
The woman who spoke turned red in her face.
"But——"
"There are no ifs and no buts," Yu Dong swept her gaze sharply at the villagers. "You all are having fun, right? Aren't you living a wonderful life by following my ideas? Why did I not hear you refuse this hard when I gave you high-paying jobs?"
"Why did none of you come to say to me that the landowner and business owners do not pay such a high salary?"
"Then you all were silent? Why?"
Yu Dong waited for everyone to say something but when they didn't she herself went ahead and continued, "Because it suited you, right? The construction of the school doesn't suit you so you are making a fuss? Should I clap for you all?"
She then clapped twice before straightening up.
"The school is going to be constructed no matter what. You all can do whatever you want! I will see who will stop the construction from happening!"
