Fairy Tail Destiny

Chapter 40: Ch 40 : Daily life

Magnolia's eastern coastline, the former site of the Fairy Tail guild—now a makeshift headquarters consisting of scattered piles of lumber and a temporary bar counter.

"Everyone, starting today, we're officially resuming the acceptance of job requests! Even though this is just a temporary reception area, let's all work hard and take on more jobs," Mira said with a gentle smile, standing behind the simple bar counter.

"Ohhh!" Upon hearing Mira's words, the entire guild erupted with excitement as a large group of people rushed toward the request board.

Watching the lively scene, Lucy tilted her head in confusion. "What's up with that? Normally, they're all lazy and don't even want to work."

Hearing Lucy's remark, Noel remained silent.

He couldn't exactly say it was because of Mira's overwhelming influence, could he? In terms of looks, Lucy wasn't any less attractive than Mira, but when it came to sheer charm, Lucy was still far behind Mira's soothing, angelic smile.

"Speaking of which, Loki isn't here," Lucy muttered to herself, scanning the area.

Upon hearing Lucy's comment, Mira flashed a knowing smile, placed her hands on her hips, and teased, "Oh my, so Lucy has finally fallen into Loki's grasp, huh?"

"That's not it at all!" Lucy hurriedly took out her Celestial Spirit keys and refuted, "He helped me find my key, so I just wanted to thank him, that's all!"

"Hmm, if we see him, Noel and I will pass along your message, right, Noel?" Mira said, looking at Noel.

"Yeah. By the way, Lucy, did your Celestial Spirits get mad at you for losing your keys?" Noel nodded at Mira before turning to Lucy with a curious expression.

"Uh..." At Noel's question, Lucy's face stiffened, and she instinctively covered her backside with her hands.

Letting out an awkward laugh, she rested her forehead on the bar counter. "It wasn't just anger… It was way worse. Just thinking about it makes my butt hurt."

"Want me to ice it for you?" Gray, who happened to be passing by, casually offered.

"That's a pretty subtle form of harassment, you know."

"Lucy, show me your red butt!" Happy said, eyes sparkling with anticipation.

"That's just outright harassment!"

"If we spanked her a few more times, I wonder what kind of face she'd make!" Natsu joked with a grin, looking at Happy.

"You're a demon!" Lucy could no longer stay calm.

Boom! A beer barrel suddenly flew across the room, slamming straight into Natsu and knocking him to the ground.

At the same time, a furious female voice rang out, "Say that again!"

Everyone turned toward the source of the voice—Erza, glaring furiously at Laxus.

Laxus smirked mockingly. "Since I've got the chance, I'll just say it straight. This guild doesn't need weaklings." Mid-sentence, his gaze shifted toward two members of Shadow Gear. "You guys are pathetic, getting looked down on by a bunch of Phantom Lord nobodies. Honestly, I don't even know your names."

Jet and Droy lowered their heads.

Although they had been ambushed by Gajeel that night, the undeniable truth was that they had been easily defeated and couldn't even protect Levy.

Because of this, they had no way to refute Laxus's disdain.

After mocking the two, Laxus turned his gaze toward Lucy. "And then there's you, the so-called Celestial Spirit Mage, the real culprit behind all of this. Because of you—"

Before Laxus could finish, Noel interrupted him. "Laxus, it's already over. There's no point in assigning blame now. And besides, no one's holding you accountable for not participating in the fight, so why don't you just keep your comments to yourself?"

"Of course. This had nothing to do with me." Laxus stood up from his chair, crossing his arms. "Noel, I'm not like you. You just keep on cleaning up the messes these useless weaklings leave behind."

"You bastard!" Natsu, unable to tolerate Laxus's taunts any longer, threw a punch at him.

However, before his fist could connect, Laxus's body transformed into a golden bolt of lightning.

In the blink of an eye, before anyone could react, he had already moved to another spot.

"Laxus! Fight me one-on-one! You heartless bastard!" Natsu glared at him, unwilling to back down.

"Hahaha! You can't even touch me, and you want to challenge me?" Laxus sneered.

"When I take over the guild, all weaklings will be eliminated. Anyone who resists will be wiped out as well. I will build the strongest guild in history—one that no one will ever dare to look down on!"

With those words, his body turned into a streak of lightning and disappeared from everyone's sight.

Noel let out a helpless sigh.

There was no doubt that Laxus loved the guild just as much as anyone else—but his personality was just too...

"What does he mean by inheriting the guild? What kind of nonsense is that?" Lucy said angrily, unaware of Laxus's background.

Noel shook his head and explained, "That might not be nonsense. Laxus is actually the grandson of the guild master. So, once Master steps down, Laxus has a high chance of becoming the next guild master."

"W-What?!" Hearing this for the first time, Lucy lowered her head in worry. "I don't want that! There's no way I'd accept someone like him, who treats his comrades like trash, as our guild master."

"That's exactly why there are rumors that Master has been reluctant to retire," Mira said to Lucy. "If there's anyone in Fairy Tail who could compete with Laxus for the position, it would probably be Noel."

Hearing Mira's words, Noel shook his head. "No, I… I can't be the guild master. And besides, you all misunderstand Laxus to some extent."

"Huh? Why?"

Noel simply smiled without explaining.

"That bastard," Natsu gritted his teeth, still glaring in the direction Laxus had disappeared.

Erza shook her head. "Enough. Dealing with him is exhausting. So, how about we take on a job? Of course, we'll bring Noel, Gray, and Lucy along too."

"Hm?" Surprised by Erza's words, Gray and Lucy both turned to look at her.

"Since the Eisenwald incident, we've been working together quite often," Erza continued. "Why don't we take this opportunity to form a team? The five of us—plus Happy—would make a solid six-member group."

"But… would I really be okay in the team?" Lucy asked, both happy and uncertain about the idea.

Noel turned to Lucy and said, "What do you mean by that? Without you, it feels like something is missing. Besides, you're really strong—especially when you use Aquarius."

"Hm." Hearing Noel's words, Lucy blushed slightly, then nodded with a shy smile, regaining her confidence.

"Hurry up and get to work. Our mission is to take down the secretive magic cult operating in Lubinas' castle town. Let's move out!"

"Huh? Right now?" Noel blinked in surprise.

Then, reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a crystal necklace he had found on Galuna Island and handed it to Mirajane. "Mira, take this. This necklace has a defensive magic enchantment. Even though you'll be staying at the guild, I'd feel more at ease if you kept it with you—just in case."

Mirajane looked at the necklace in Noel's hand, a faint blush appearing on her cheeks.

She took it carefully and held it in her palm as if it were something precious. "Mm. Noel, be careful on your journey."

"Ohhh~" Seeing this scene, the guild members started teasing and cheering.

--------------

At night, Makarov sat at a high vantage point, looking down at the construction of the guild, lost in thought.

He was getting old.

After this recent incident, he had started to consider whether it was time for him to retire and enjoy the rest of his days in peace.

However, no matter how he thought about it, there wasn't a suitable candidate to succeed him as the next guild master.

Gildarts had yet to return, and even if he did, he was a walking disaster zone.

Laxus had serious psychological issues and a poor relationship with the guild members.

Mystogan was steady and reliable, but he was too distant and not sociable enough.

As for Noel, while his personality and strength made him an ideal choice, because of that reason, he was actually the least suited to inherit the position.

Mirajane was still too soft, and Erza's personality was just…

As Makarov continued to hesitate, Mirajane's voice suddenly called out, "Master, so you're here."

"Hm?" Makarov looked down and saw Mirajane's smiling face.

"They've caused trouble again!"

"WHAT?!!!"

Mirajane unfolded a document and showed it to Makarov. "It looks like Noel and the others destroyed half of the town during their mission. The Magic Council has already demanded that we submit a formal damage report. Huh? Master, are you okay?"

She looked at Makarov, who seemed to have turned to stone from the sheer impact of the news.

"HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO RETIRE LIKE THIS?!!!"

His furious roar echoed throughout all of Magnolia.
