Chapter 39: Ch 39 : Father and Daughter
Noel sat on the chair, his fingers interlaced, gazing calmly at Lucy's father. "Well then, before Lucy returns, let's have a talk, Mr. Heartfilia."
Lucy's father looked at Noel with a cold and stern expression, his tone devoid of warmth. "Indeed, we should talk. Name your price. How much do you want to let Lucy come back?"
Hearing this, Noel didn't get angry.
In fact, his expression remained completely unchanged as he stared directly into Lucy's father's eyes.
After a long silence, Noel let out a soft chuckle.
"What are you laughing at?" Lucy's father frowned.
Noel stopped laughing and returned to his usual composed demeanor. "Originally, based on what Lucy told me, I thought you were a man who would sell anything for money. But now, it seems I was completely wrong. You love her more than anyone else in this world."
Lucy's father's hands trembled almost imperceptibly at Noel's words. "I don't know what you're talking about. I want Lucy to return so she can marry the son of the Judeau family and help Heartfilia Railways expand into the south. That's all."
"Heh…" Noel didn't respond directly.
Instead, he turned his gaze to a painting on the wall and spoke as if he was commenting on something unrelated. "She really does look like her mother… Lucy."
"What are you trying to say?"
Noel turned his head back to face Lucy's father. "I think we should stop here. There's no point in keeping up the act any longer. Because… more than anyone, I know what the eyes of a father who truly has no love for his child look like."
He leaned forward slightly, his piercing gaze locking onto Lucy's father. "And from your eyes, I don't see hatred or indifference. What I see is concern and care. Although this is just my speculation… you're simply running away, aren't you? Because Lucy looks too much like her mother. Isn't that right?"
For the first time, Lucy's father truly looked into Noel's eyes, his gaze filled with complex emotions.
Yet Noel continued speaking as if he hadn't noticed.
"You're avoiding Lucy because seeing her reminds you of her mother. So, you chose to immerse yourself completely in your work. Maybe in your mind, this way you could both escape from Lucy and also provide her with the best material life possible. But you made one mistake… Lucy is just a girl, a girl who needs her parents' love. What you're doing won't bring her any happiness. In the end, it will only push the two of you further apart. I think… even Lucy's mother wouldn't want to see things turn out this way."
After a long silence, Lucy's father finally spoke. "Then, in your opinion, what should I do?"
Noel looked at his tired face and said, "Sincerity and honesty. That's what Lucy truly needs, and at this moment, it's the only thing you can give her."
Lucy's father nodded slightly before suddenly asking, "Is Lucy happy in the wizard guild?"
Noel was momentarily stunned before understanding what he meant.
With a gentle smile, he nodded. "Yes, she's very happy."
"I see. I will have a proper talk with her," Lucy's father replied.
"Oh, right," Noel suddenly seemed to remember something and spoke up. "You just mentioned the Judeau family, correct?"
"Yes, that's right. Why?" Lucy's father asked, puzzled.
Noel scratched his cheek and replied, "Although speaking ill of others behind their backs is rather impolite, I still feel the need to say this—the Judeau family is extremely ambitious and rather cunning. Just from what I know, at least a dozen prominent families and financial groups have been deceived by them and ended up bankrupt. My advice to you is to look into them carefully. If you notice anything suspicious, it's best to cut ties with them as soon as possible."
"Is that so? I will make sure to check carefully," Lucy's father nodded, his expression growing noticeably more serious.
Knock, knock.
As Noel and Lucy's father were speaking, a knock on the door interrupted them.
"It's me, Lucy. I'm back, Father," Lucy's voice came from outside.
"Come in," her father replied.
The door opened, and Lucy stepped inside.
She was dressed in a red evening gown adorned with lace, her golden hair elegantly tied up, exuding a noble aura from head to toe.
Upon entering the room, she immediately noticed Noel sitting across from her father and visibly froze for a moment.
"Ahem... Lucy, about earlier—I'm really sorry," Noel said awkwardly, offering an apology.
"Ah… um, it's nothing," Lucy's face flushed slightly as she clearly recalled the earlier incident.
As if escaping, she quickly avoided Noel's gaze and turned to look at her father, offering a small bow. "I sincerely apologize for leaving home without informing you. I have been reflecting deeply on my actions."
Lucy's father looked at her for a long moment before finally speaking.
"You've returned… Traveling must have been tiring."
Lucy was slightly stunned, then nodded.
Her father smiled faintly and said, "Can we have a proper talk, Lucy?"
"Huh?" Lucy looked at her father in astonishment.
In her memory, her father had always been a cold and ruthless man.
Ever since her mother passed away, she had never seen this gentle side of him.
Noel chuckled softly and stood up. "Well then, I'll take my leave." With that, he stepped out of the room.
The rest was for the father and daughter to sort out themselves—after all, he was just an outsider.

"Noel!"
As Noel waited for Lucy in the courtyard, he suddenly saw Erza, Gray, Natsu, and Happy rushing toward him, their faces filled with worry.
"Uh… why are you guys here?" Noel blinked in confusion at the group.
After a flurry of explanations, Noel finally understood what had happened.
The group had gone to Lucy's apartment, seen the letter she had left behind, and mistakenly thought she was quitting the guild.
In a panic, they had rushed over.
Noel chuckled lightly. "No, Lucy just came back to talk with her father. You don't have to worry. She'll be returning to the guild soon."
"Huh?" The group stared at Noel in shock.
At that moment, Lucy walked out of the mansion and, upon seeing her friends, asked in surprise, "Why are you guys here?"
Seeing their embarrassed expressions, unsure of how to respond, Noel stepped in to help. "They came to pick you up. How did the talk with your father go, Lucy?"
Hearing Noel's words, Lucy's face lit up with happiness. "Mm! My father and I talked a lot. This was the first time we've ever sat down and shared our thoughts like this. Noel, thank you."
Noel shook his head. "No, what matters is that your father loves you. I only helped guide things along. As long as you both cleared up the misunderstandings, that's what's important. Now, let's head back to the guild."
"Yeah!" Lucy smiled warmly at her friends and nodded firmly.
"This town is ridiculously huge," Gray suddenly commented as he looked around.
Erza also nodded. "It's so peaceful and pleasant."
"Ah, no, that's not it," Lucy quickly corrected them. "This is just my family's courtyard. Everything up to that mountain over there is still part of my house."
"...What?"
Natsu and Gray froze in place, completely petrified.
"The young lady has appeared!!!!"
"A casual, nonchalant flex has appeared!!!!"
Happy flew over to Erza, saluted, and reported, "Natsu and Gray have been taken down! Captain Erza, please say something!"
"Ahaha, the sky… is so blue," Erza said calmly, gazing at the sky, which was tinted red by the sunset.
"Medic! Captain Erza has malfunctioned!!!" Happy immediately reported.
"Uh…"
Noel and Lucy watched the scene unfold before them, and finally, they couldn't hold back their laughter anymore.
"Hahahaha!"
