The Sharpest Blade (My Vampire System Fan-Fic)

Chapter 51: When a God Closes a Door, You Must Make A Window

Shiro tapped at the controls. "Stealth engaged. Shields up. We're locked onto the ship's position. Let's do this quiet if we can. Hopefully they don't have some sort of advanced defensive sensors. If they detect us before we get the jump, this rescue mission will be over before it even kicks off."

Jade and Shiro exchanged a glance. "We could use the emergency docking armature." Jade suggested as she scanned the visual of the ship growing before them. "The problem is, where do we dock? We need the least amount of distance between us and the guys or getting back out again may prove troublesome." Jade stepped closer to the control console with her arms crossed. Her brow furrowed as she raised a hand to her chin. "Have you tried to scan the ship again since we closed in on it?" She questioned Shiro.

Sil lifted a brow. He had to admit, Vorden did good to find Jade. She was perfect for him. There were times that she even reminded him of Vorden. It brought a slight smile to his face, immediately followed by a pang of guilt.

Shiro smirked, nodding. "Airtight magnetic seal, laser saw to create our own entry point, pressurized breach. I think you're on the right track." Shiro knew of course, there was no doubt when it came to the planning of a dangerous mission, the military academy's professor of combat strategy may very well have a thing or two to bring to the table.

Cassidy whistled. "Smart."

Shiro was quick to action, he pressed a few buttons on the console, accessing the scanners. "I will run the scans again, hopefully we can find either general power signatures, or at least heat signatures if nothing else. Luckily this place looks mostly abandoned. I doubt there's much life onboard. Of course a vessel this size will have to have some level of crew, albeit a skeleton one."

After his last button press they all held their breath in anticipation. Silent prayers were being sent out into the void as their wide eyes remained glued to the viewscreen. A moment or two passed in total silence, nothing could be heard other than the beeps and whirles of various systems operating.

Sil exhaled when suddenly the screen showed an overlay of the ship in front of them. There were several things to note when the image appeared. The first was a small collection of bright orange and red dots scattered around the top few floors of the ship. Some were slowly moving around but most were completely still. They were sparsely present, gathered in little clusters, mainly around 5-6 each. There were a couple groups of 2-3. Every so often there were the odd single by itself and there were two large groupings with more, even a single group with over 10 as far as they could tell.

They all understood what they were seeing. Each dot represented a heat signature, a life force. They varied in brightness and shade based on the power level of the individual. These dots were the inhabitants of the decrepit vessel.

The next thing to note was the fact that those inhabitants appeared to only be occupying those first several top floors. With a few floors that looked completely abandoned just below them.

The truly interesting thing about the image however were 3 dots, all the way at the bottom, completely at the back of the giant ship, very close to the massive cargo bay doors. They were interesting because first and foremost they were noticable brighter than all the rest. One in particular was so bright and white it nearly made it difficult to look at the screen.

Right next to it were two dots that were vastly less bright than the one they were with, but undoubtedly brighter than the rest of the ship's passengers. Shiro's face brightened as his lips curled up into a smile. "Bingo." He said as he pointed to the dots. " Pretty sure we've found our captive Blades."

The girls both looked at each other, smiling excitedly. "Wait a minute" Jades eyes narrowed. The dots on the bottom of the ship suddenly lit up, surging brighter for a few seconds. They all exchanged glances as the surge continued for another few seconds, and then dimmed back to the way they were before. They all frowned, looking around at each other.

"What--- What does that mean?" Cassidy asked in a shaky tone. Fear written on her face as she looked back and forth at the others.

"I--- I don't know." Shiro stood up and gave Sil a look of deep concern.

Sil's expression grew somber, and in a grave tone he just said "It means nothing good, we can be sure of that." He joined the others standing.

Things were already set into motion.

"Alright. Shiro, see if you can figure out the best place to breach. We don't want to go in exactly where they are being held. At least not with Calyx right there too. Then monitor the three signatures, if he moves to another area, leaving them alone, then we will have a limited window of opportunity."

"We should see if we can still try to go in, under the radar. We must hold out as long as possible though. If any of the three starts to fade or if any separate, we go in immediately closest to whichever two are together at the time." Shiro nodded quickly returning to his seat he began entering commands into the console.

Sil turned to Jade next. "Jade, get the armature prepped. Make sure it's all operational and ready to go, then get yourself geared up and prep the saw. The second Shiro gives the go ahead we are getting on that ship."

Jade gave a single determined nod and almost had to stop herself from saluting. She paused for a fraction of a second and looked like she was going to say something, but ultimately she regained her composure and about faced before breaking into a jog, leaving the command center to complete the tasks.

"What about me Sil?" Cassie asked eagerly.

Sil's mouth turned upwards into a grin. "You, come with me. We have some shopping to do." She was visibly confused, but followed Sil out of the command center all the same.

The Blade ship drifted forward, cloaked and silent, the city ship looming ever larger.

They were outnumbered. Outgunned. They were going in for all intents and purposes, blind. They had only two abilities at their disposal and one completely mundane human, unable to wield any ability at all. Going up against a literal vengeful god as well as possibly any unknown number of his dedicated followers. Their odds were not exactly encouraging. None of that really mattered though.

Because they were coming.
