Chapter 2: [2] The World of 'Chivalry of a Failed Knight'
Looking back, it all happened fifteen years ago.
In his previous life, Eiji was an ordinary otaku. As a member of the vast world of Qidian, he naturally grew up in the Qidian Orphanage, spending his days writing web novels. Although his monthly earnings weren't high, he lived a carefree and unrestrained life.
Until one day, a pop-up window appeared on his computer screen. It seemed to be an advertisement for some game, prompting players to create a character template right from the start.
Unable to close the window no matter what he tried, suspecting a virus, he was about to give up on the computer. But driven by curiosity, he decided to give the game a try and created a character template.
The character template had only two main categories: Basic attributes and Talents.
The Basic Attributes had five subcategories: Physique, Intelligence, Magical Power, Charm, and Luck.
The Talent options were rather peculiar—not because of the options themselves, but because of the icons. The talent icons looked like they were made by someone who had only been learning animation for four years, crude and without any text descriptions.
He stared at them for ten minutes before barely managing to identify a dozen or so icons, such as a Sword, Bow, Spear, Fist, Foot, Hammer, Test Tube, and Fishing Rod.
Most of the others were incomprehensible, leaving him utterly baffled, as if he were an old man on the subway staring at a smartphone, wanting to curse the game designer's mother.
Assuming it was some kind of life simulator virus game, Eiji, with a sense of curiosity, allocated his points.
And then.
When he woke up, he found himself crossed over to this world called 'Chivalry of a Failed Knight' (Rakudai Kishi no Eiyuutan).
Why he crossed over after waking up and why he ended up in a 2D world—these were questions he couldn't answer, and he had long since stopped worrying about them.
Rather than obsessing over unanswerable questions, it was better to find ways to adapt to the new world and new life.
Although this world seemed no different from Earth on the surface, it was vastly different in terms of history, culture, geography, and more.
At its core, this was a world where special abilities users dominated the mainstream.
『Blazers』
These were individuals capable of manifesting their souls as weapons—『Devices』—and manipulating them through magic. They were rare, appearing only one in a thousand people.
In ancient times, they were called 『Mages』, 『Witches』, and their weapons were referred to as 『Holy Swords』, 『Magic Bows』, 『Cursed Tools』, 『Treasures』, and so on.
Now, those who wielded special abilities in battle were generally called 『Blazers』.
And the weapons they manifested from their souls were known as 『Devices』.
This was a miraculous power that transcended human limits, a supernatural ability that neither martial arts nor conventional weapons could rival.
The existence of Blazers influenced every aspect of society. Modern police, military—even wars—were built upon the foundation of Blazers.
"This world revolves entirely around Blazers."
Sitting on the train heading to Hagun Academy, Eiji thought to himself.
In his previous life, he was a web novelist, so he had a fairly comprehensive understanding of this world. But over time, even though he had tried to remember, his brain clearly had its own way of forgetting.
If it weren't for his senior sister telling him, he wouldn't have remembered that Hagun Academy was undergoing reforms this year.
But after living in this world for so many years, he had already adapted and understood its common knowledge.
Blazers possessed immense power. Powerful Blazers could even manipulate time and pose a threat to national entities.
But with great power came great responsibility, and thus, the〈Mage-Knight System〉 was established.
The〈Mage-Knight System〉 required Blazers to graduate from internationally recognized, professional Blazer training institutions and obtain a〈License〉 before they could be considered qualified Mage-Knights.
Blazers without a license were not recognized as professional Mage-Knights.
Those like his senior sister, who were still studying at specialized Blazer training institutions, were generally called〈Student Knights〉, serving as candidates for Mage-Knights.
Blazers like Eiji, who neither had a license nor were Student Knights, were, from a societal perspective, just ordinary people.
His master had sent him to Hagun Academy to become a true Mage-Knight.
In Japan, Hagun Academy was one of the seven〈Knight Schools〉 where one could obtain a Magic Knight license—provided, of course, that one could graduate successfully.
***
Hagun Academy was located in the Tokyo area of Japan, just an hour's drive from Tokyo International Airport.
By noon, the two got off at the station closest to Hagun Academy.
This was not a prosperous city.
The city wasn't large, lacking the hustle and bustle of a major metropolis like Tokyo. Although it was modern enough, with many high-rise buildings in the downtown area, it was still just a third-tier city.
Hagun Academy was built in the suburbs of this city, deep within a mountain.
After leaving the station, the two were greeted by a one-kilometer-long uphill road, lined with various plants. Pink cherry blossoms were in full bloom, scattering down before their eyes, creating a breathtaking scene.
About ten minutes later, they reached the top of the slope and arrived at the school gate of Hagun Academy.
"It's so spacious."
Eiji walked through the main gate, looking at the rows of classroom buildings and dormitory buildings on either side, and couldn't help but marvel.
"Of course, it's one of only seven such schools in all of Japan. It can't be shabby. In fact, Hagun Academy covers about 50 hectares of land, roughly the size of ten Tokyo Domes!"
Seeing Eiji's reaction, his senior sister explained with pride.
Indeed.
At a glance, the entire Hagun Academy was so vast that one couldn't see the end. The campus was filled with numerous buildings, forests, and domed arenas. Standing there, one felt a sense of solitary satisfaction, as if in the heart of a city center.
"There don't seem to be many people around."
Eiji looked around, but at the main entrance of the school, there was almost no one in sight.
"There are still a few days before the semester starts. The students and teachers haven't returned yet."
His senior sister gently patted Eiji's shoulder, reminding him, "Let's go. I'll take you to the Director's office first to complete your enrollment procedures, and then we'll celebrate."
Eiji nodded and followed his senior sister.
After entering the main gate, directly ahead was a building over ten stories high, standing out even in the vast campus. This was the administration building, where the school's teachers usually worked.
Entering the administration building, they took the elevator to the top floor. His senior sister stopped in front of the only room on the floor.
Knock! Knock! Knock!
"Come in."
After knocking, a cool female voice came from inside.
"Excuse us."
His senior sister opened the door and motioned for Eiji to follow.
"Director, I am Touka Toudou. As previously reported, I would like to complete the enrollment procedures for my junior brother. The documents have already been sent to your email."
Eiji silently entered the room and closed the door behind him.
It was a lavishly decorated office. The ceiling had a bright yellow chandelier, the floor was covered with expensive carpets, and the desk and chairs were made of polished redwood. Paintings hung on the walls.
"Student Council President, since he's your junior brother, that means he's also a disciple of the『God of War』, right?"
Behind the desk, a woman dressed in a dark black suit was working at her computer. After the two entered, she looked up.
Her gaze paused briefly on Eiji, seemingly surprised, before she turned back to the screen and pulled up the email Touka had sent.
"Eiji Nangou? With this surname... He's actually an E-rank Knight?"
