Chapter 164: Chapter 164 ⤞ An Abnormal Emotional Breakdown
Question: In the vast, cold darkness that surrounds you, if a warm orb of light suddenly appears, what choice would you make?
Most people would reach out to touch it out of curiosity.
That's what Rem thought too. After all, what did she have to fear, being already dead?
She reached out with her right hand and touched the orb of light.
And then she was resurrected.

She opened her eyes.
In her dazed state, she found her right hand touching the cheek of the man before her. With a puzzled tone, she called out his name.
"Adam...?"
"Yes, it's me, Rem. Good morning. Did you sleep well? You must be tired after being away from us for so long. Take your time resting — I'll speak with Ram and Roswaal, so there's no need to rush."
Before she could process what was happening, Adam's continued talking only added to her confusion.
The man gently brushed aside the hair covering her eyes, allowing her to see the people and scenery around her clearly.
"But... wasn't I dead?"
"Yes! But I brought you back to life!"
"Brought back to life?" Hearing these words, Rem's confusion instantly cleared.
She reached out, touching her abdomen. With no clothes in the way, she felt only smooth, warm skin, sensing both the touch of her hand and the feeling in her abdomen.
—Her abdominal wound had healed completely.
"Yes, that's right! Rem has been successfully resurrected — congratulations, congratulations! Let's celebrate!" Adam cheered, transforming the previously somber atmosphere.
The sudden shift from long-held sorrow to unexpected joy was jarring.
"Oh! Celebrate?... Like hell!" Subaru, who had been playing along, suddenly burst out, "What's going on, Adam?! How is Rem alive again when she was dead?!"
Emilia spoke softly, "Indeed. While I can't deny that Rem has been resurrected, it's truly unbelievable. Even witches can't bring back the dead..."
"Yeah! Young man, you've done something extraordinary here." Puck circled around Rem several times to confirm she was truly alive, his voice mixing amazement and surprise, "This is truly remarkable."
Beatrice's eyes widened in disbelief.
A dead person coming back to life?! How could this be possible?!
This was something even Mother couldn't do!
Ram, however, embraced Rem without hesitation, accepting this miracle more readily than the others.
Rem was her sister, her blood relative, her only family in this world! As she held her sister close, breathing in her familiar scent, Ram's tears began flowing once more.
"Sister...?"
"Rem, Rem, my dear sister..."
"There, there, Rem is here. Sister, please don't cry anymore."
The sisters held each other tight — a deeply moving display of sisterly love.
But this tender moment was interrupted by Subaru's urgent question, "Explain quickly, Adam! Why, why is Rem alive again?!"
"Kid, have patience! Let me explain simply: I can resurrect one person." Adam said, choosing his words carefully, "But only once, and only humans! Humans, demi-humans, and beast-people are possible, but not Spirits! That's why I was relieved when I learned Beatrice was alive, and less devastated when Rem died... because I knew I could bring her back. Ram, I apologize for what I said before."
After explaining, he smiled apologetically at Ram.
Beatrice was an Artificial Spirit who would return to the world as mana without leaving a body when killed, so Adam couldn't resurrect her.
That's why she held more weight in his heart.
Ram simply shook her head, indicating it was fine. Her sister's resurrection was enough — she treasured this feeling of regaining something once lost.
"Well then, may I leave for a bit?" Adam asked, seeing that Rem was revived and things had settled.
"Leave..." Emilia asked curiously, "Adam, do you have something to do?"
"Yes! To pick a fight — or perhaps 'revenge' is a better word?" He said with a smile, "Don't let my calm appearance fool you. I'm actually furious right now, almost to the point of losing my reason."
"That constant smile of yours is truly terrifying." Subaru commented, then furrowed his brow gravely, "The earl's mansion is dangerous — we can't act rashly. We don't know what other traps might be waiting. We should leave now."
"No, we can't leave. Those Witch Cult bastards dared to kill Rem — I won't forgive them!" Adam flatly rejected Subaru's suggestion, determined to pursue the Witch Cult.
"As I thought, Adam, you're not acting like yourself. You were talking about being cautious before we came back, so why this recklessness now? At first, I thought it was because of Rem's death, but after what you just said... your emotional swings are extreme!" Subaru stood in front of everyone, watching him warily, "This isn't like you at all, Adam!"
"I am who I am, Adam Carter! The man who defeated the White Whale with a single slash!" Adam said with a light laugh, "People's mindsets change as their power grows, Subaru. Don't worry — just wait here safely for my return. I can handle any difficulties. You don't need to do anything, just leave it all to me!"
His words grew increasingly excessive, rudely belittling those before him while elevating his own importance. Getting more worked up, his face reddened as his emotions spiraled out of control.
Suddenly, a cooling sensation enveloped his heated mind, bringing his nearly lost reason back to clarity.
"...Ah, huh?" He blinked in confusion, and reviewing what he had just said made him shudder.
That villainous attitude wasn't like him at all! An upright young man wouldn't speak to his companions this way!
"Adam...?"
"Adam, are you alright?"
"Adam?"
Adam, whose face had been flushed red moments ago, suddenly turned pale and fell silent, making everyone more worried.
"S-sorry, I seem to have lost my composure." Holding his forehead, he apologized softly while growing suspicious.
Why? Why did his emotions suddenly spiral out of control?
And why so suddenly? Just as Subaru said, he really wasn't acting normal!
How could he have said such things?
Fortunately, no one blamed him for his outburst, assuming his anger over Rem's death had made him speak rashly.
"Adam, are you okay?"
"Sorry, I'm fine. I got too emotional earlier. I apologize for losing my temper with you all."
"It's fine, it's fine. Adam was angry because of Rem — how could we hold it against you when you care so much about your companions?" Subaru stepped forward, speaking softly, "But... I know you're strong, Adam, but we don't know how many enemies there are or where they're hiding. Shouldn't we leave first, just to be safe?"
"Indeed, leaving would be the best choice..." Adam thought for a moment, then said, "However, I still need to find the Witch Cult."
"Why?"
"Subaru, you saw it when we passed through the village. Not a single person remained — I suspect the Witch Cult took them. If word spreads that they massacred the villagers, it would devastate Emilia's reputation. You understand what I mean, right?"
"But shouldn't we ensure our own safety first?"
"Don't worry, I trust in my abilities. As I said, I'm the man who defeated the White Whale with a single slash. Unless we face Reinhard himself, I can at least escape." Adam addressed everyone, "You all stay in the Forbidden Library — with Puck and Beatrice here, you'll be safe."
Even as he spoke these words, he left a magic mark as a medium for Al Shamak.
This mark would serve both as rescue and escape — two purposes in one.
"Alright. But Adam, please be careful."
"I will be, don't worry."
"Safe journey." They called in unison.
"Just wait here safely for my return."
With that, Adam departed the Forbidden Library alone.
