Chapter 20: Chapter 20: The Hunting Ground of Gathered Monsters
At dawn, Su Yi stretched lazily before getting out of bed. Nearby, Rucao breathed onto the goggles attached to her leather cap and polished them with her cat paw.
After washing up, the man and the cat headed into the kitchen.
Having obtained permission from Honey the day before to use the kitchen and its ingredients, Su Yi began preparing breakfast.
"A bowl of plain porridge with an egg—simple and easy." As the porridge simmered, he cracked a herbivorous dragon's egg into the pot and sprinkled in some diced meat.
With that, a large pot of simple yet hearty lean meat and egg porridge was ready.
"You're up early, Su Yi." At that moment, Honey entered the kitchen carrying a Western-style breakfast of bread and other items.
"You don't have to go through the trouble of making breakfast," she said.
Su Yi handed her a bowl of porridge and replied, "Since I'm staying here as a guest and don't have much to offer in return, I want to contribute in any way I can."
"Besides, I'm not a kid anymore." He sat down, grabbed some bread, and began eating.
"I might be back late today, or maybe not at all. But don't worry." After finishing breakfast in just a few bites, Su Yi and Rucao excitedly dashed out the door.
"That boy, Su Yi—sometimes he's as mature as an adult, and other times he's just like a playful child." Honey couldn't help but chuckle, reminded of her old man who was obsessed with video games.
At the Armor Island Station
Riding his mount, Su Yi arrived at the Corviknight Station southwest of Yili Wilds. Travelers frequently used this station to take Corviknight taxis across the sea.
Though called a station, it also functioned as a marketplace where one could buy various trainer supplies, cooking ingredients, and spices. People also came here to sell various items and materials.
Su Yi approached a merchant and sold off some of the materials given to him by the Pokémon in the Focus Forest. These included Big Mushrooms, which collectors sought after, Apricorns that artisans used to craft Poké Balls, and some shiny crystal shards. He even sold a Leaf Stone that he wouldn't need anytime soon.
The money he earned didn't stay in his pocket for long—he spent most of it on potions, revives, and Poké Balls.
"Hmm, I should get some daily necessities too, like seasonings." After another round of picking and choosing, most of his newly earned money was spent.
"Alright, now I'm fully prepared for the journey ahead." Su Yi nodded in satisfaction.
Caw!
The cry of a Corviknight echoed in the sky as it descended, gripping a small passenger car with its strong wings.
Someone had arrived on Armor Island.
"Oh? Who's coming this early in the morning?" Su Yi curiously glanced at the entrance of the station.
A girl dressed in a martial artist's uniform, carrying a simple backpack, leaped out of the car and surveyed her surroundings.
"Hmm? Galar's Fighting-type Gym Leader, Bea?" Su Yi was surprised to recognize her—it was someone he knew, though only from the games.
"You recognized me?" In the nearly empty station, Bea was not surprised to see Su Yi looking at her in astonishment. After all, every Gym Leader had a fanbase and plenty of exposure.
"Here for training?" Su Yi wondered. In the game, if one delved into the characters' backstories, they would learn that Bea was a martial arts prodigy who was strict with herself and often trained alone in uninhabited areas.
It was just a passing encounter, so Su Yi didn't dwell on it. He was more interested in his upcoming adventure.
Back to the Ancient Tree Forest
"Ahh! Ancient Tree Forest, I'm back!"
After leaving the station, Su Yi arrived at the Focus Forest, found a secluded spot, and traveled back to the Monster Hunter world—the New World.
Whoosh~
Unlike the usual sunny weather, today the sky was overcast, and a cool breeze carried a slight chill.
"Is it going to turn cloudy?" Su Yi speculated as he released Rucao.
"We're back, meow!"
At that moment, a Poké Ball on his waist wobbled.
"Larvesta?" Su Yi released the Pokémon.
"Lar!" Larvesta immediately crawled onto Su Yi's head, curiously observing its surroundings.
"You don't like staying in the Poké Ball either, huh?" Su Yi patted the fuzzy little creature's head.
"Vesta!"
"Then hold on tight so you don't get lost."
"If I remember correctly, it should be this way." Su Yi compared the map in the Hunting Guide with the scenery he had observed from atop the ancient tree last time, making his way toward a clearing in the forest.
Larvesta's eyes darted around, taking in the scenery—similar yet distinct from the Focus Forest.
"Keep quiet and hold on tight," Su Yi reminded it, then climbed a tree with Rucao.
From his vantage point, he could see the clearing.
Aptonoths were leisurely grazing, while vines crisscrossed the trees above them, bearing numerous Scattering Walnuts.
Occasionally, a ripe walnut would fall and burst open with a pop, exposing its flesh. The Aptonoths would then approach to eat the exposed fruit.
"If I remember correctly, Scattering Walnuts are one of the Pukei-Pukei's favorite foods. Let's see if we can spot one." Su Yi patiently began his stakeout.
The weather continued to worsen—clouds now fully obscured the sun, and the wind picked up.
The temperature dropped, but luckily, with Larvesta's Flame Body ability, it served as a cozy hand warmer in Su Yi's arms.
"Thank goodness for Larvesta." Su Yi whispered in appreciation.
"Lar~" Larvesta was delighted to be useful.
Whoosh—whoosh!
The sound of wings cutting through the air made them fall silent and tense up.
"It's here!"
A green-scaled, feathered Bird Wyvern slowly descended, its chameleon-like eyes warily scanning the area.
After confirming there was no danger, the Pukei-Pukei remained airborne, using its long, flexible tongue to roll up Scattering Walnuts and store them in its swollen throat pouch.
"Should I act now, or follow it back to its nest and strike there?" Su Yi remained alert, knowing this clearing wasn't the Pukei-Pukei's exclusive feeding ground.
As the creature immersed itself in eating, a sudden thud of heavy footsteps echoed.
"Kwaa?" The Pukei-Pukei snapped its head up, alert.
A black-furred, brute-force predator suddenly charged out, ramming into an unsuspecting Aptonoth. With one bite, its powerful jaws crushed the monster's throat, killing it instantly. Only then did it notice the airborne Pukei-Pukei.
"Roar!" The Anjanath let out a warning growl.
"Anjanath again? Is it the same one from before?" Su Yi muttered.
This behavior matched Anjanath's ecology—it spent its days hunting and patrolling its vast territory, marking it with scent. Since this was a grazing area for Aptonoths, it naturally served as its hunting ground as well.
The Pukei-Pukei, now full, chose not to engage. It flapped its wings, preparing to leave.
But just then—
Whoosh!
A whistling sound sliced through the air as several sharp thorns shot out from the opposite tree line, precisely piercing and tearing through the Pukei-Pukei's wing membrane. The bird let out a shriek and plummeted.
"That's—!" Su Yi's eyes narrowed, and a familiar burning pain flared up in his back.
