Chapter 42 - 42 Changing Flights
Chapter 42: Chapter 42 Changing Flights
“What exactly happened?” Pei Yansi saw the person in charge come in, his voice low and trembling.
The person showed a look of fear, terribly afraid of Pei Yansi’s current state, and said, “The plane crashed; it’s a disaster that our airline could not have foreseen…”
“Are there any survivors?” Even though he knew there wouldn’t be any, he couldn’t help but ask knowingly.
“There were no survivors in the plane crash…”
Hearing someone confirm it, a chunk of Pei Yansi’s heart felt as if it had been gouged out on the spot, the pain raw and intense.
Unable to imagine how a person who was fine just days ago could suddenly be gone forever, Pei Yansi looked at his assistant with bloodshot eyes and said in a cold voice, “Alive, I want to see the person; dead, I want to see the body.”
The assistant acknowledged the order and quickly turned to leave.
Pei Yansi also took a step to follow, walking out to the airport’s main hall. There, a mixed crowd was waiting; some were crying, while others were comforting.
He stood in a corner of the crowd, silently observing everything.
At that moment, the noisy crowd somehow didn’t seem so irksome.
Pei Yansi didn’t know how long he had stood there, waiting for news from his assistant.
He refused to believe that Shen Heyu was really gone.

He stood until his legs went numb, even as other flights had landed and passengers from those planes had emerged from the airport.
Suddenly, his gaze swept across a very familiar figure.
Shen Heyu, dragging her luggage, walked out from the midst of the crowded throng. Even with a mask that covered only half her face, he recognized her at a glance in the crowd.
The gaping hole that had first been dug out in his chest was instantly filled by something, and before he could even grasp what it was that had filled the void, he was already stepping forward.
As soon as Shen Heyu came out, he walked swiftly towards her and pulled her into his arms, holding her tight.
“President Pei?”
Shen Heyu was startled by this sudden embrace, still somewhat puzzled, but feeling uneasy with so many people at the airport, she began to lightly struggle and twist in his arms.
Pei Yansi frowned, his displeasure evident as he held her even tighter and said coldly, “Don’t move.”
Shen Heyu then became completely still.
She detected the tremor in his voice and felt his tall frame shaking.
Seeing those crying around her, she realized what had happened and asked from within his arms, “You didn’t think I was dead, did you?”
She hadn’t expected her to be so blunt about the situation. The frustration that had enveloped Pei Yansi’s heart upon losing and regaining her exploded out as he pulled her from his embrace and said, “What happened? You changed flights, and your phone was unreachable? Didn’t you think to notify the company?”
Shen Heyu was taken aback, having never seen him like this before, especially like this over her. Although she didn’t fully understand his motives, the real trembling she felt from him made her respond patiently,
“I was supposed to be on that flight, but I got held up by some things and had to change flights. I was in such a rush, I didn’t manage to notify the company.”
Pei Yansi bit his lip and said nothing.
At this moment, the assistant had returned. Normally, there wouldn’t have been information on the deceased so soon, but upon returning, he saw that Shen Heyu was already there.
He paused for a moment before changing his statement, “Madam is safe, oh, that’s really great.”
“Let’s go back first.”
Seeing Shen Heyu safe, Pei Yansi quickly resumed his usual demeanor.
Aloof and unapproachable, Pei Yan turned and began walking in front of Shen Heyu.
The assistant took the luggage from Shen Heyu’s hands, and the two of them followed in silence.
Back in the car, the assistant started the engine and headed for the ancestral home.
But on the way, they received a call that the old lady had heard about the incident with the flight and, becoming nervous and worried, had not gotten over the shock and had fainted.
Shen Heyu felt worried and suddenly thought she really shouldn’t have failed to notify her close ones in time.
Pei Yansi sat next to her the whole way without uttering a word, but the aura he gave off was extremely chilly; she knew he was still angry.
But logically, he should have been the one dying of concern for her, his behavior was quite abnormal, and Shen Heyu didn’t take it to heart.
Nor did she ever consider apologizing to him.
After all, it wasn’t deliberate, and if anyone really ought to apologize, it was him, not her.
Half an hour later, the car arrived at the mansion.
As soon as Shen Heyu got out of the car, she rushed straight to the old lady’s room and before she even got there, she heard the old lady’s angry voice:
“What are you, thinking you can just come into the Pei Mansion with your status?”
Then there was the sound of a porcelain bowl smashing on the floor.
Shen Heyu walked in, surprised, only to see Bai Sheng’er standing on one side, her neck shrunken, saying, “I truly wanted to come and attend to you…”
“I don’t need it!” The old lady didn’t give an inch and cut her off directly.
At the same time, she swept a glance and noticed Shen Heyu entering from the doorway.
Her heart leapt with joy, even forgetting to be surprised, and hastily asked, “Heyu is back?! Are you all right?”
Shen Heyu nodded and approached, saying, “Grandma, I changed flights. I’m sorry to have worried you.”
“As long as you’re alright, that’s all that matters!” The old lady was too happy to even consider blaming her.
Pei Yansi followed behind her into the room, and when he saw Bai Sheng’er, his brow furrowed nearly imperceptibly, but after all, he said nothing.
He only asked the family doctor standing aside, “How is the old lady?”
“There’s no serious issue, she just fainted due to a moment of worry and a rush of anger; her health is fine.”
The doctor, having said this, packed up his medicine box and left.
Bai Sheng’er took the initiative to approach Pei Yan, her eyes and brows drooping, her tone pitiful, “Brother Yan Si… I really wanted to come and care for Grandma, I hadn’t expected that I would still be too clumsy and upset her…”
Pei Yansi frowned, seeming not inclined to engage with her at the moment, and spoke in a deep voice, “You should go back for now. If I don’t bring you with me next time, don’t come on your own.”
Although he treated her differently, he still knew that the Pei Mansion was not like other places, not just anyone could freely come and go.
Bai Sheng’er, dissatisfied in her heart, dared not say anything and just cast a vicious look at Shen Heyu when Pei Yan couldn’t see.
She had thought that after the plane incident, Shen Heyu would undoubtedly be dead, but unexpectedly she had come back. Even in such a situation, she had survived against all odds.
Envy and hate filled her, but she concealed it and followed the assistant out first.
Once they were gone, the old lady’s face visibly relaxed as she looked towards the couple standing by her bedside, “You two should move back home and stay for the next few days. It would also be good to take care of this old bag of bones.”
In reality, she knew that when they lived on their own outside, she couldn’t see what was happening between them and had no idea of the state of their relationship.
Only if they were back in the mansion could she lend a helping hand.
