Chapter 40 - 40 Leukemia
Chapter 40: Chapter 40 Leukemia
“I still have work to do.” Pei Yansi had already bathed and was lying in bed, with Shen Heyu lying beside him, a great distance away as if she were afraid he would get close.
He felt somewhat dissatisfied inside. They had already been intimate, so why was she still so scared?
But thinking of the person on the other end of the call, he softened his tone, “It’s late already. You should rest early. Once I finish my work, I’ll come back to keep you company.”
Bai Sheng’er could tell from his words that he was going to hang up, and in a moment of desperation, she burst into tears and blurted out, “But the doctor said I don’t have much longer to live…”
Pei Yansi frowned. “What nonsense is that?”
“After you left yesterday, the wound on my leg reopened. I went to the hospital for a checkup, and the doctor told me I have leukemia…” Bai Sheng’er lied effortlessly, not caring about anything else. All she wanted was for Pei Yansi to come back and be with her.
The more she talked, the sadder she became, and the more tears streamed down her face. Crying, she said, “I don’t know how much longer I can live, Brother Yan Si, please come back to me…”
Shen Heyu was close enough to Pei Yansi to easily hear the voice on the phone.
She heard Bai Sheng’er’s crying and frowned without a change in expression, knowing it was another one of her acts.
Leukemia, such an outdated plot from novels years ago, and yet Bai Sheng’er was still using it.
It was like seeing Bai Sheng’er as leukemia itself.
And yet some people would believe it. As soon as Pei Yansi heard the sobbing from the other end, he immediately stood up from the bed, grabbed the clothes beside him, and dressed at top speed as if his hand no longer hurt.

At the same time, he said to her, “I’m coming right back.”
He hung up quickly after speaking.
When he was ready to leave, it was as if he only then remembered Shen Heyu by his side. He lowered his eyes and said in a deep voice, “You go to sleep first; I’m leaving.”
With that simple sentence, without any excess words or lingering, he left.
Hearing the door close behind him, Shen Heyu laughed self-deprecatingly.
He had left with such finality, as if their previous intimacy had never happened.
Shen Heyu couldn’t sleep all night.
Pei Yansi made his way back to the city as fast as he could, heading straight for the hotel where he had arranged Bai Sheng’er to stay.
Three hours later, he arrived.
Bai Sheng’er opened the door for him, and upon seeing him, she threw herself into his arms without a word, cooing “Brother Yan Si, you’ve finally come…”
Welcoming her soft and fragrant embrace, Pei Yansi’s heart softened. He reached out to touch her smooth hair and gently said, “Let’s talk inside.”
Bai Sheng’er obediently nodded and pulled him by the hand into the room.
During the three hours it took for him to arrive, she had already prepared a fake medical record and placed it conspicuously on the coffee table.
So that Pei Yansi would see it as soon as he entered.
He saw the diagnosis on it: at most only three months to live.
He frowned, looking towards Bai Sheng’er in the light, her eyebrows and eyes so similar to Shen Fanshuang’s, always unconsciously reminding him of the past.
Shen Fanshuang was dead, and now even the only person who looked like her wouldn’t live long either?
Facing his deep yet icy eyes, Bai Sheng’er felt as if she were sucked into a vast vortex, emotions swirling in her heart as she burrowed back into his embrace, weeping:
“I’m really sad, why didn’t I meet you earlier…”
“I met you too late… Brother Yan Si, if I’m gone, will you be alright?”
She spoke earnestly, word by word, with a shimmer of tears in her eyes, and tears clung to the corners, threatening to fall. Seeing her like this tugged at one’s heartstrings.
Pei Yansi raised his hand to hold her tightly in his arms and said, “I will find someone to treat you.”
He did not wish for a second Shen Fanshuang incident to occur.
He hoped she could live well and continue being Shen Fanshuang’s replacement.
Downstairs at the hotel, in Pei Yansi’s car, his assistant was still waiting but guessed that he would not be coming tonight. After some thought, the assistant left alone.
As soon as dawn broke the next day, he immediately called the old lady.
The call was quickly answered, “How did it go, how are they getting along?”
Ever since Shen Heyu was hospitalized last time, the old lady still felt that their relationship wasn’t as good as Shen Heyu claimed it to be.
Knowing that Shen Heyu was the type who disliked speaking ill of others, she had the assistant secretly observe their interaction and report back to her accurately.
Sure enough, it was exactly as she had suspected.
As soon as she heard that Pei Yansi had left to find Bai Sheng’er, the old lady was fuming. After inquiring about the reason, she immediately ordered an investigation into Bai Sheng’er’s illness.
The old lady still had a few trusted confidants; it took them no more than a couple of days to uncover the truth.
She had guessed that Bai Sheng’er was just feigning illness.
Early the third day, she immediately phoned Pei Yansi.
Pei Yansi, in his office, was remotely accompanying Shen Heyu in reviewing public relations materials. Seeing her call, he felt a hint of irritation but still answered politely.
“Come to the old mansion tonight, I have something to tell you.”
Detecting the seriousness in the old lady’s tone, Pei Yansi thought there was a major issue and said, “What’s happened, what can’t be said over here?”
“Of course it can’t, this matter has to be discussed in person. And bring that, what’s her name, Bai Sheng’er, with you.”
The old lady didn’t give him a chance to ask more and hung up first.
Pei Yansi frowned, feeling that this was uncharacteristically too much; hadn’t she previously disapproved of Bai Sheng’er the most?
But he did not have the time to ponder, overwhelmed by work, he simply instructed his assistant to arrange the evening schedule and then immersed himself back into his tasks.
The busy time flew by, and as the sun set, Pei Yansi left the office and first went to Bai Sheng’er’s office.
It was his first time personally fetching her, which only fueled the gossip among the office staff who were already speculating about their relationship.
Bai Sheng’er was secretly thrilled and quickly followed him out. Together, they entered the elevator before she asked, “Brother Yan Si, is something the matter?”
Only the two of them were in the elevator. Pei Yansi glanced at her and said, “I am taking you to the old mansion.”
“Me?” Bai Sheng’er could hardly believe it. Following behind him, her heart was fluttering with excitement. Was this him taking her to meet his family?
Exiting the company and getting into the car, they soon arrived at the Pei Family’s old mansion.
The house was just as Bai Sheng’er had imagined, luxurious and spacious, with servants bustling to and fro. Entering the small garden was like walking into the Imperial Palace.
Bai Sheng’er’s eyes could not hide her astonishment.
The old lady was sitting in the garden, and upon seeing the two approach, she took in the emotion in Bai Sheng’er’s eyes at a glance.
Almost immediately, she saw through what this young woman desired.
“You’re back?” the old lady spoke first, then turned to someone beside her and said, “Did you bring everything you were told to prepare?”
