Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Fragments of The Past
Fragments of the Past
The demon pursuing Mirajane moved with unnatural speed, its form shifting between solid and vapor as it cut through the air. Despite pushing her Satan Soul transformation to its limits, she could sense it gaining ground.
"I need somewhere to make a stand," she muttered, scanning the landscape below.
The terrain had become increasingly warped by the Convergence—rivers flowed upward, gravity shifted unpredictably, and patches of alien vegetation dotted the landscape. Finally, she spotted a clearing surrounded by crystalline formations that pulsed with magical energy.
Perfect. She could use those formations to amplify her own power.
Mirajane dove sharply, wings tucked tight against her body. At the last possible moment, she flared them open, landing with such force that the ground cracked beneath her feet. She spun to face her pursuer.
"Fragment-bearer," the demon growled as it descended. "Your resistance is futile. The pieces must be reunited."
"These powers aren't pieces of anything," Mirajane replied, dark energy gathering around her fists. "They're part of me now."
The demon's laugh was like breaking glass. "You humans. Always believing yourselves the center of existence." It stalked forward, its elongated limbs moving with fluid grace. "The entities you've absorbed are mere splinters of a cosmic whole—one that existed before your world was even formed."
Mirajane launched her attack without warning, a blast of concentrated darkness striking the demon squarely in the chest. It staggered backward but appeared more surprised than injured.
"Interesting," it mused, examining the scorched mark on its obsidian skin. "You've achieved greater integration with the fragments than anticipated." Its eyes narrowed. "But your control remains incomplete."
Before Mirajane could respond, the demon reached out—not physically, but with a tendril of psychic energy that bypassed her defenses and touched the demonic entities within her. Immediately, she felt them stir, resonating with the intruder's call.
Pain lanced through her body as her transformation wavered, the entities she'd absorbed over the years suddenly fighting against her control. She fell to one knee, struggling to maintain her hold.
"Stop... fighting me," she gasped, speaking not to the demon before her but to the ones within. "We're stronger together!"
"They hear the call of reunion," the demon explained, advancing slowly. "Every fragment yearns to be whole again." It extended a clawed hand. "Surrender them willingly, and your death will be painless."
Mirajane's response was a defiant smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Fairy Tail wizards don't surrender." With supreme effort, she reasserted control over her transformation, rising to her feet as dark energy crackled around her. "And I've never been very good at doing things the easy way."
She launched herself at the demon, moving faster than she ever had before. Her fist connected with its jaw, sending it careening into one of the crystal formations. The impact shattered the crystal, releasing a wave of raw magical energy that washed over both combatants.
Instead of harming them, the energy seemed to intensify their powers. The demon grew larger, its form solidifying into something even more nightmarish. Mirajane felt her own Satan Soul responding, evolving beyond its usual limitations.
"Yes," the demon hissed, its voice deepening. "The convergence energies accelerate the awakening. Soon, all fragments will call to one another across the dying barriers between worlds."
Mirajane felt something change within her—a deepening awareness of the entities she had absorbed. For the first time, she sensed not just their power but fragments of their memories, stretching back to origins in worlds she couldn't comprehend.
"Who are you?" she demanded, both of the demon before her and those within. "What do you want?"
"I am Nexarius, Hunter of Fragments," the demon replied. "As for what I want..." Its mouth stretched into a terrible smile. "The end of separation. The restoration of the Primal Dark."
The name 'Primal Dark' resonated through Mirajane's entire being, causing the entities within her to surge with recognition. Visions flooded her mind—a primordial force that existed before light, before structure, before the division of reality into separate worlds.
"The Primal Dark was sealed away for a reason," she found herself saying, drawing on knowledge she hadn't possessed moments before. "It threatened all existence."
Nexarius tilted its head, regarding her with new interest. "The fragments speak through you already. Good. That will make the reabsorption easier."
It attacked again, not physically but with another psychic assault aimed at the entities within her. This time, however, Mirajane was prepared. Drawing on her newfound awareness, she established a deeper connection with her demonic powers, not just controlling them but harmonizing with them.
"They're not just fragments," she realized aloud. "They're refugees. They broke away from the Primal Dark willingly."
Nexarius snarled. "Traitors. Deserters. They will be reclaimed, as will all fragments across all realities."
The battle intensified, magic and anti-magic clashing in spectacular displays of power. Crystal formations around them continued to shatter, releasing more convergence energy into the area and further warping the local reality.
Despite her enhanced abilities, Mirajane found herself gradually losing ground. Nexarius seemed to grow stronger with each passing moment, drawing power from the very distortions in reality surrounding them.
"You cannot win, fragment-bearer," it taunted as it deflected another of her attacks. "I am connected to the Convergence itself. Each reality that touches another feeds my strength."
Mirajane knew it was right. Even with her newfound understanding and enhanced Satan Soul form, she was fighting a losing battle. But she didn't need to win—she just needed to survive long enough for help to arrive.
Miles away, Kizuna's senses flared with sudden intensity. He stopped mid-stride, causing Natsu to nearly collide with him.
"What is it?" Erza asked, recognizing the look of concentration on his face.
"Mira," Kizuna replied, his voice tight with concern. "Her power just spiked dramatically. She's fighting."
Lucy glanced worriedly between Kizuna and Teilanne. "Can you track her?"
Kizuna nodded, his expression hardening into the determined look that reminded everyone of his Saiyan heritage. "I can sense her energy signature clearly now. It's... different. Evolved somehow."
"Then what are we waiting for?" Natsu demanded, flames already dancing around his fists. "Let's go help her!"
Kizuna was already moving, his speed forcing the others to race to keep up. As he ran, memories flashed through his mind—Mirajane's smile when he'd first asked her to dinner; her quiet strength during their training sessions; the way she understood the burden of power in a way few others could.
"She's not just my girlfriend," he thought fiercely. "She's family now."
The thought of his siblings gave him additional resolve. Uruk would have already calculated a dozen strategic approaches to the situation. Gine would have charged in headfirst, her battle lust rivaling even Natsu's. Young Cumber would be worried but determined, always eager to prove himself worthy of the Saiyan legacy.
They all adored Mirajane. From the moment he'd introduced her to them, the Strauss siblings had been embraced as extended family. Elfman and Uruk had developed a strange friendship based on prolonged debates about the nature of manhood across different cultures. Lisanna and Cumber shared a love of animals and transformations. And Gine—between her training sessions with Laxus and her good-natured rivalry with Erza—had found in Mirajane a kindred spirit who understood what it meant to contain immense power beneath a controlled exterior.
"I'm coming, Mira," Kizuna whispered, pushing himself to move faster than he ever had before. "Hold on."
As if answering her thoughts, a massive bolt of lightning struck Nexarius from behind, followed immediately by a familiar roar:
"Fire Dragon's Roar!"
A torrent of flames engulfed the demon, pushing it away from Mirajane. Looking up, she saw Natsu and the others cresting a ridge nearby, with Kizuna at the lead.
"Mira!" he called out, a green aura beginning to flare around his muscular form. "Hold on!"
Relief flooded through her, but it was short-lived. Nexarius recovered quickly from the surprise attack, its form shifting to absorb and neutralize the magical energies directed at it.
"More interferers," it growled. "This grows tiresome."
Teilanne appeared suddenly beside the demon, moving with speed only a Saiyan warrior could achieve. Her fist connected with Nexarius's chest, the impact creating a shockwave that cleared the surrounding area of debris.
"Go!" she shouted to Mirajane as she continued her assault. "Get to safety while we hold it back!"
But Mirajane shook her head, standing her ground. "It wants the entities I've absorbed. If I leave, it will just follow me."
"Then we face it together," Kizuna said, reaching her side and taking a defensive stance. His eyes widened slightly as he took in her enhanced Satan Soul form. "Mira, your transformation..."
"I know," she replied, feeling the changes herself. Her power had evolved, becoming both stronger and more refined. "The Convergence energy affected it somehow."
Kizuna's hand found hers briefly, their fingers intertwining as his energy resonated with hers. "Whatever happens, we face it as one."
The simple gesture centered her, calming the turmoil of the entities within. Though they had only been officially together for a short time, their connection ran deeper than either could fully express—a recognition between two souls who understood the weight of power and responsibility.
Erza, having requipped into her Heaven's Wheel armor, joined them. "Whatever it did, use it. This creature is unlike anything we've faced before."
Nexarius assessed the newcomers with cold calculation. "Insignificant. None of you possess what I seek." Its gaze returned to Mirajane. "Except her."
"Then you'll have to go through all of us," Lucy declared, golden keys already in hand. "Open, Gate of the Lion! Leo!"
As Loke materialized beside her, Natsu and Happy took up positions on Mirajane's other flank.
"Nobody takes our friends," Natsu growled, flames dancing around his clenched fists. "Especially not some ugly realm-hopping demon!"
Kizuna stepped forward, his aura intensifying, the green energy crackling around him with barely contained power. "You face not just Fairy Tail today," he declared, "but the legacy of worlds you cannot comprehend. My siblings and I have prepared for threats like you our entire lives."
The mention of his siblings brought an unexpected pang of longing. Uruk would have already identified weaknesses in Nexarius's defenses. Gine would have matched Natsu's enthusiasm for battle, potentially dragging Laxus into the fray as well. Cumber, despite his youth, would have offered insights that only his unique perspective could provide.
Narak, who had been observing from a slight distance, finally stepped forward. "It's not just any demon," he said grimly. "It's a Hunter—created specifically to track and reclaim fragments of the Primal Dark."
"You know of us," Nexarius said, its attention briefly shifting to Narak. "Interesting. Few remember our purpose."
"I know more than you realize," Narak replied, his cybernetic eye glowing ominously. "Including how to send you back to your masters."
He raised his hand, revealing a device embedded in his palm that pulsed with the same energy as the breach they had encountered earlier. "Now, Teilanne!"
The Saiyan warrior nodded once, then began channeling her power in a way none of them had seen before. Instead of the familiar golden aura of her race, her energy took on a prismatic quality, seeming to bend light around it.
"Everyone back!" she ordered. "This technique isn't precise!"
As the Fairy Tail wizards retreated to a safer distance, Teilanne completed her power-up. The energy she had gathered compacted itself around her hands, becoming so dense it appeared almost solid.
"Reality Sunder!" she shouted, slamming her palms together.
The resulting blast wasn't directed at Nexarius but at the space behind it. Reality itself seemed to tear open, creating a swirling vortex similar to the breach they had discovered earlier.
Simultaneously, Narak activated the device in his palm. A beam of concentrated energy shot forth, striking Nexarius and surrounding it with bands of light that constricted its movements.
"Now!" he shouted. "Push it through!"
Understanding the plan, Mirajane gathered her power for one final attack. Drawing on her enhanced Satan Soul abilities, she unleashed a blast of pure demonic energy that slammed into the bound Hunter.
Kizuna's body suddenly began to transform, his muscles bulging as his power level skyrocketed. His black hair flickered, then erupted into a brilliant green mane that flowed down his back. His eyes, now pupilless and glowing with the same emerald energy, fixed on Nexarius with primal intensity.
"RAAAAAAHHH!" The roar that tore from his throat wasn't entirely human as the legendary power of his bloodline finally awakened. The ground beneath him cracked and shattered from the pressure of his energy alone.
"The Legendary Super Saiyan," Teilanne whispered, her eyes wide with a mixture of awe and fear.
Without using any named technique, Kizuna simply thrust his hands forward. The raw energy that poured forth merged perfectly with Mirajane's attack, creating a spiral of power that none of them had seen before—demonic energy and legendary Saiyan strength intertwining to create something greater than the sum of its parts.
"Together!" Mirajane shouted, as Kizuna's overwhelming power fused with her own, forcing the demon backward.
The combined efforts of Teilanne's reality breach, Narak's binding technology, and the united attack from Mirajane and Kizuna were enough to send Nexarius tumbling backward into the vortex. As it disappeared, its final words echoed ominously:
"This changes nothing. The fragments will return to the whole. The Primal Dark will rise again!"
The vortex collapsed immediately after, sealing the Hunter away—for now, at least.
Exhausted from the battle and the strain of maintaining her enhanced transformation, Mirajane reverted to her human form, nearly collapsing before Kizuna caught her. His own transformation had receded, though a faint green aura still clung to him like static electricity.
"That was reckless," he said softly, concern evident in his eyes. "Leading it away alone."
"It was necessary," she replied, managing a tired smile. "And it worked, didn't it?"
"Barely," Teilanne remarked, approaching them. The Saiyan warrior looked drained from her reality-manipulation technique, but her expression remained composed. "That was no ordinary demon. Its connection to the Convergence made it far more dangerous than we anticipated."
She cast a wary glance at her son. "And your transformation, Kizuna. We will need to discuss that later."
Narak nodded grimly. "And it won't be the last. The barriers between realities are weakening by the hour. More Hunters will come, seeking the fragments."
"Then we need to understand what these fragments really are," Erza said, her armor disappearing as she returned to her regular attire. "And why they're so important."
All eyes turned to Mirajane, who looked down at her hands, remembering the visions and knowledge that had briefly flowed through her during the battle.
"The entities I've absorbed through my Satan Soul magic," she began slowly, "they're not just random demons. They're pieces of something ancient—something called the Primal Dark." She looked up at the others. "And they broke away from it deliberately, seeking freedom."
"A cosmic prison break," Natsu summarized, plopping down on a nearby rock. "So now the prison wants its inmates back?"
"It's more complicated than that," Narak said. "The Primal Dark isn't just a being or an entity—it's a primordial force that existed before the separation of realities. When the multiverse formed, it was fragmented, with pieces of it scattered across countless worlds."
"Over time," Teilanne continued, "those fragments developed individual consciousness, becoming what your world knows as demons."
Lucy's brow furrowed in thought. "But why try to reassemble now? After all this time?"
"Because someone is manipulating the Convergence," Kizuna answered, his arm still supporting Mirajane. "Deliberately weakening the barriers between realities to allow the fragments to find each other."
"But who would want that?" Happy asked, hovering anxiously nearby. "Who benefits from releasing some super-ancient evil?"
Narak and Teilanne exchanged a look that spoke volumes.
"There are those who believe the Primal Dark isn't evil," Narak explained carefully. "Just primordial. Pre-moral. They see it as a force of pure creation and destruction, necessary for the renewal of a multiverse they consider stagnant and corrupt."
"They call themselves the Harbingers," Teilanne added. "And they've existed across multiple realities for millennia, working toward this moment."
Kizuna's expression darkened. "Uruk mentioned theories about such a group in his research. He's been tracking anomalies in magical frequency patterns across Fiore for months." He turned to his mother. "We should contact him and the others immediately. Gine's sensory abilities might help us track these Harbingers, and Cumber's unique perspective on transformation magic could give us insights into how these fragments operate."
Teilanne nodded, pride evident in her eyes. "Your siblings have already been alerted. Uruk sent a message before we left—he's been coordinating with Levy on translating ancient texts that might contain information about the Primal Dark."
"And Gine?" Kizuna asked, knowing his battle-hungry sister would be furious at missing the confrontation with Nexarius.
A rare smile touched Teilanne's lips. "Currently escorting Laxus and the Thunder Legion on a mission to investigate energy disturbances in the eastern forests. Apparently, they've encountered anomalies similar to what we found here."
"And Cumber is with Master Makarov," Narak added. "His sensitivity to magical fluctuations makes him valuable in reinforcing Fairy Tail's defenses."
Erza's expression hardened. "Then we need to return to Fairy Tail immediately. Master Makarov must be informed of this threat."
"Agreed," Teilanne said. "But we should avoid the direct route. The Convergence distortions are growing more unpredictable, and after that battle, we're all in need of rest."
As the others set about establishing a camp, Mirajane found herself sitting slightly apart, still processing the revelations about her magic and the entities she had absorbed. Kizuna joined her, offering a water flask.
"How are you feeling?" he asked, his voice low enough that only she could hear.
"Changed," she admitted after taking a sip. "During the battle, when my Satan Soul evolved, I could feel the consciousness of the entities I've absorbed. Not just their power, but their... memories. Their fear."
"Fear of this Primal Dark?"
She nodded. "They broke away from it because they wanted individuality. Freedom. Being reabsorbed would mean the end of their separate existence." She looked up at the increasingly strange sky, where multiple realities seemed to bleed into one another. "I always thought my Take-Over magic was about domination—exerting my will over these demonic entities. But now I wonder if it was more of a partnership all along."
Kizuna considered this thoughtfully. "Perhaps that's why your magic is so effective. You don't just control these entities; you work with them. Offer them something they value."
"A symbiosis," Mirajane murmured, the concept resonating deeply. "But what happens when more Hunters come? The fragments within me clearly responded to Nexarius's call. What if next time, I can't maintain control?"
Kizuna's hand found hers, his grip firm and reassuring. "Then we'll face it together. All of us." His dark eyes held hers steadily. "You know my siblings consider you family already. Cumber asks about you constantly—he still wants you to help him develop his own transformation techniques."
A small smile touched Mirajane's lips. "He reminds me of Lisanna at that age. So eager to master every form." Her expression grew more serious. "And Uruk? What will he make of all this theoretical knowledge suddenly becoming very practical?"
"He'll adapt, as he always does," Kizuna replied with confidence. "Probably already has three contingency plans drafted." He paused, his tone softening. "Gine will be furious she missed the fight, though. Especially since it involved protecting you."
"She's always been oddly protective of me," Mirajane observed. "Even while claiming I'm one of the few humans worth sparring with."
"Because she sees in you what I do," Kizuna said simply. "Someone who understands what it means to contain tremendous power and still remain kind." His voice lowered further. "You're not alone in this, Mira. You never will be."
"And your transformation?" she asked softly, finally addressing what everyone had witnessed. "I've never seen anything like it before."
Kizuna looked down at his hands, which still occasionally flickered with green energy. "The Legendary Super Saiyan," he murmured. "A power that appears rarely in our bloodline. Destructive. Overwhelming." He met her gaze. "Terrifying, even to most Saiyans."
"But you controlled it," she said, placing her hand on his.
"For you," he replied simply. "Because you needed me."
Across the camp, Teilanne observed their interaction with knowing eyes before turning back to her conversation with Narak.
"Your son has found a formidable partner," the commander remarked, following her gaze. "The Take-Over mage's potential is extraordinary."
"As is the danger she faces," Teilanne replied, her expression grave. "The Harbingers will target her specifically once they learn how many fragments she carries."
Narak nodded. "Which is why we need to accelerate our plans. The Saiyan artifacts your husband has been tracking—they may be our only hope of stabilizing the Convergence without releasing the Primal Dark."
Teilanne's eyes widened slightly. "Gildarts found the Star Forge?"
"Not yet," Narak admitted. "But he's close. The energy signatures in the western mountains match our predictions."
A small smile touched Teilanne's lips. "That man... always exactly where he needs to be, whether he knows it or not."
"A trait your son seems to have inherited," Narak observed, glancing again at Kizuna and Mirajane. "Along with powers we can only hope he can control when the time comes. The legend of the green-haired destroyer has brought fear to countless worlds."
"He is not just the legend," Teilanne said firmly. "He is my son. The human in him—the part from his father—that may be what saves us all."
As night fell over the transformed landscape, the Fairy Tail wizards and their allies rested as best they could, knowing that the battle with Nexarius was merely the opening skirmish in a war that spanned worlds and threatened the very fabric of reality itself.
In his sleep, Natsu dreamed of dragons—not just the dragons of Earth Land, but strange, mechanical dragons that soared through the red skies they had glimpsed through the breach. Beside him, Happy muttered about fish that swam through air instead of water.
Lucy's celestial keys glowed faintly by her side, resonating with the convergence energies saturating the area. In the Spirit World, the Celestial Spirit King watched with mounting concern as the barriers between realities continued to thin.
And in the mountains to the west, completely unaware of his family's encounter with the Hunter, Gildarts Clive stood before a hidden cave entrance, its walls inscribed with symbols identical to those etched into the medallion Kizuna always wore around his neck. A faint smile crossed his face as he recognized the Saiyan script his wife had taught him years ago.
"Star Forge," he read aloud, his voice echoing in the ancient chamber. "Looks like I found what you were looking for, Teilanne."
His hand passed over a symbol that began to glow at his touch, responding to the trace amounts of Saiyan DNA he carried from years of physical contact with his wife. The mountain rumbled as mechanisms dormant for centuries began to activate.
Deep within Earth Land's core, something ancient stirred in response—something that had arrived with the first Saiyans who had visited this world millennia ago. Something that might hold the key to saving the multiverse... or ensuring its final destruction.
The Convergence continued, and with it, the race to determine which fragments of the past would shape the future of all realities.
