Chapter 3: You dog
"Eight more times it is." Damien Bloodbane thought with a confident smile as he prepared to swerve completely to his left to avoid the next round of shots.
However at that moment…
"Damien Bloodbane you fucking retard! What the hell are you doing?!" A completely pissed off voice suddenly sounded from his earpiece.
Crack! Booom!!!
The familiar sound of a small explosion sounded from behind him and Damien Bloodbane's smile widened slightly as he bid Death farewell yet again.
He didn't have to turn around to know that at that moment, a thick mist had formed around the enemy camp and effectively prevented the snipers from targeting him.
He was saved.
His good buddy, Harry Shadowfang was his only friend in Blackthorn City.
Damien had accidentally saved Harry's life when he assassinated a European Lieutenant who had captured Harry and was about to execute him.
Ever since then, Harry had stuck to Damien like a leech and they had come to an unspoken agreement that they would help each other with their missions.
The only problem for Harry was, Damien was a madman. He undertook wildly dangerous five man missions… alone!
"Maybe next time, old friend." He whispered ruefully to Death. He could almost see Death smiling back at him and retracting his bony arms, releasing him from their near-embrace.
"You reckless lunatic! Stop talking to your fucking imaginary friend and start talking to ME! Your real fucking friend in the fucking flesh who is currently trying very hard to fucking save you!!" Roared the very angry and vulgar voice in his earpiece. "I will fucking kill you myself when you fucking get back to bas-"
Crackle. Crackle.
The angry voice of his good buddy disappeared suddenly and all at once, his instincts blared loudly once more.
"Comms interference?" Damien Bloodbane's eyes narrowed slightly.
Combined with the fact that there was an ambush awaiting his assassination attempt, he immediately realized one thing.
"I've been betrayed." But there was no fluctuation to his emotions at all. It was as though he was only dealing with a minor revelation, something along the lines of "oh there's an ant in my soup."
His lips remained curled in a cold smile as he considered the small entrance into the concrete forest ahead of him.
There was no doubt in his mind that the traitors had probably prepared a trap for him there.
Maybe they were even standing by over there to kill him themselves.
That was probably why they ran interference on his comms, so that he wouldn't be able to reveal to the group voice channel who were the ones betraying him.
"Let's see what you guys have planned for me." Damien Bloodbane mused fearlessly and decisively entered the small entrance into the concrete forest.
He made his way through the maze of bent steel bars and slabs of half destroyed concrete with great agility, zooming through the obstacles at great speed when suddenly…
Slash!!
The air around him suddenly turned drastically cold as an ice blue sword appeared out of nowhere from his left and slashed horizontally towards his neck!
Damien Bloodbane did not even blink as he swung his left dagger upwards to divert the sword slash safely over his head.
Clang! CRACK!
His left hand and dagger froze upon impact and shattered into a million pieces.
Wincing heavily, Damien Bloodbane ignored the blinding pain as another dagger appeared on his right hand and he leapt to his left with his right dagger leading the way.
Puchi.
Blade found flesh and fresh blood sprayed everywhere.
"Agh… Gh…" His assailant's face was contorted in disbelief and pain as her hands grabbed her own neck to try and stop the blood from leaving her body too quickly.
But it was useless.
Her body crumpled weakly to the ground, her eyes still staring at the useless E Rank Tierless Classless trash that had managed to kill her, a much more powerful B Rank Tier 37 Water Knight!
"Sister Jeslyn?" Damien Bloodbane eyes flashed sharply in surprise at the sight of a familiar face dying amid a growing pool of blood, flowing freely from the gash he inflicted on her neck.
"Gh… Gha…kh." Blood bubbled from Jeslyn Bloodbane's mouth as she took her final breath and died.
Damien Bloodbane grimaced and his expression turned heavy. He didn't expect his own kin to be the ones betraying him and hunting him down.
Jeslyn Bloodbane wasn't his real sister, of course. She was merely a distant cousin, a clan member in the same generation as him.
But Jeslyn Bloodbane had no reason to kill him. If she was taking action, then it means…
"How dare you kill a Bloodbane Clan member?! You useless traitor!" A powerful, self righteous voice sounded from somewhere in front of him.
"Rick Bloodbane." Damien Bloodbane smiled coldly in recognition.
A muscular middle aged man in military uniform appeared from the depths of the concrete forest.
The insignia on his shoulders glowed silver, denoting his high rank as Major of the Bloodbane Army.
Rick Bloodbane was a fiendishly competent officer of the Bloodbane Army.
Even if his C rank was on the lower side of the spectrum, he was an accomplished killer, and his fighting skills were top notch, sharpened through countless combat, baptized by the blood of numerous dead enemies.
As well trained as Damien Bloodbane was, he was still quite a distance away from being a match for Rick Bloodbane.
His fate was more or less sealed. If a miracle did not happen, Damien Bloodbane would die in the next few minutes!
But as before, a fearless aura swirled around him.
He did not fear death.
Not even in the slightest!
"Jeslyn was your cousin, a promising B Ranked powerhouse, a genius that our clan is nurturing. Killing her is treason of the highest level." Rick Bloodbane said in a heavy voice.
Damien Bloodbane merely chuckled at his self righteous argument.
Didn't they expel him from the clan? Why couldn't he kill their clan members then?
And if killing Jeslyn Bloodbane was treason, did that mean that he should just obediently allow her to kill him when she feels like it, without having the right to retaliate?
What sort of warped logic was that?
But he didn't bother saying those words aloud. What use was there in arguing with someone already intent on killing him?
Still, there were some things he wanted to know.
"So grandfather had finally grown tired of having such a humiliating E Rank failure, even just as a former part of the Bloodbane Clan?" Damien Bloodbane said bitterly.
"Your grandfather gave no such command." Rick Bloodbane said calmly as he stepped slowly forward, his powerful C Ranked aura radiating outwards from him and pressed down heavily on Damien Bloodbane.
"Ha." Damien Bloodbane barked out a derisive laugh. "You're just his dog. You wouldn't dare make a move against me if he didn't agree to it."
