Chapter 6: The Phantom’s Shadow
The weight of his own breath felt heavy in his chest. Shin Noragetsu stood at the edge of Konoha's vast training grounds, his katana gleaming under the dim light of the rising sun. His fingers twitched slightly around the hilt. The events of the past days lingered in his mind like a storm refusing to pass. The mysterious figure, the talk of the Void, the resurgence of the Akatsuki—everything felt as if it was spiraling toward an unknown fate.
Beside him, Naruto Uzumaki stretched with a grin, seemingly unaware of the burden hanging over Shin's shoulders. "So, you ready to show me what a samurai from the Land of Iron can do?" Naruto asked, his excitement evident.
Shin exhaled slowly, steadying himself. "I don't plan on holding back."
Across from them, Sasuke Uchiha stood with his arms crossed, observing the interaction with his usual cold gaze. "Don't underestimate him, Naruto," Sasuke said, his Sharingan spinning to life. "Something tells me he's not an ordinary samurai."
Shikamaru Nara, Choji Akimichi, and Neji Hyuga stood nearby, also drawn by the rumors of the mysterious swordsman who had suddenly appeared in Konoha. Even Sakura Haruno watched with mild interest, though her attention seemed split between the match and Sasuke.
Tsunade had ordered a controlled spar, allowing Shin to test his abilities against some of Konoha's strongest. It was meant as a simple assessment, but Shin felt the weight of something much heavier. He wasn't just proving himself to them—he was proving himself to himself.
Naruto grinned. "Alright then, let's go!"
In an instant, the blond Hokage-in-training surged forward, his speed nearly unpredictable. But Shin had already read the movement. His training in the Land of Iron had honed his reflexes beyond what most shinobi were accustomed to. With a single step, he twisted his body and parried Naruto's punch with the flat of his blade, sending him skidding back.
"Whoa!" Naruto blinked in surprise before laughing. "Okay, you're fast. Let's see how you handle this!"
With a flick of his fingers, Naruto summoned a dozen shadow clones, each of them charging forward with synchronized precision. Shin's eyes flickered with focus. He tightened his grip on his katana and inhaled deeply.
The world slowed.
Shin's body moved instinctively. The first clone came from the left—Shin sidestepped, slashing through it in one fluid motion. The second one lunged from behind, but he spun, striking its knee before slicing through its torso. One by one, the clones popped into wisps of smoke, his blade never stopping, his movements a seamless dance of destruction.
The last clone attempted a feint, but Shin was already in motion, stepping forward and pressing his katana lightly against the real Naruto's neck before he could react.
The crowd watching went silent.
Naruto gulped. "Okay… yeah, that was pretty cool."
Sasuke's eyes narrowed slightly, intrigued. "He doesn't rely on chakra for his speed. That's pure technique."
Shikamaru let out a long sigh. "Troublesome… But impressive."
Tsunade, who had been observing from a distance, finally stepped forward. "That's enough," she announced. "Shin Noragetsu, your skills are evident, but raw talent isn't enough in times like these."
Shin lowered his blade, nodding in understanding. He knew that. He had always known that. But as he sheathed his katana, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was still missing—something deep within him, waiting to be unlocked.
That night, as he sat alone in his quarters, the words of the hooded stranger echoed in his mind.
"The Void will claim you."
His fingers curled into fists. If the Void was truly a part of him, then he needed to understand it. Before it consumed him first.
But the shadows outside his window stirred, unseen eyes watching. And Shin had yet to realize that his journey was only beginning.
