Chapter 20: Shadows of the Unseen
The wind howled through the crumbling ruins of the valley, carrying with it the scent of blood and ash. Shin's footsteps were steady as he led the group through the wreckage, his mind still clouded by the echoes of the abyss. The whispers had quieted, but their presence lingered, threading through his thoughts like ghosts of a past he couldn't shake.
The others followed in silence. The battle had drained them, but there was no time to rest. Every second they spent here risked exposure.
Kai stepped beside him. "Shin, are you sure you're alright?"
Shin's Abyss Eye flickered as he exhaled. "I'm fine."
Kai didn't seem convinced, but he let it go. "We need to regroup with the others before Tenka sends more of his followers after us. That bastard knew we were coming. He won't let us escape so easily."
Shin nodded. "We move fast. No detours."
Aiko pulled her cloak tighter around her shoulders, glancing over her shoulder. "Feels like we're being watched."
"We are," Daichi muttered. "The cult never leaves loose ends."
Rei adjusted his grip on his blade. "Then we kill them before they kill us."
Shin's gaze swept across the ruins. The Valley of Ash was a graveyard, a place where forgotten battles had been fought, and the dead had been left to decay. The ruins of an ancient temple loomed ahead, its broken pillars stretching toward the storm-ridden sky.
They entered cautiously, their steps muffled by the layers of dust and debris. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of old magic, the walls etched with faded symbols of a forgotten era.
Aiko ran her fingers over one of the markings. "This place… it's older than anything I've ever seen."
Shin studied the glyphs. They were similar to the ones he had seen in the abyss, yet different—etched with a purpose lost to time. He reached out, pressing his palm against one of the symbols. A sharp pulse of energy surged through him.
The room darkened.
The air grew heavy.
A presence awoke.
A shadow materialized at the temple's center, its form shifting like smoke in the wind. "You tread upon hallowed ground, mortals."
The group drew their weapons in unison.
Shin remained still. "Who are you?"
The shadow chuckled—a sound that sent a shiver down Aiko's spine. "A question with no simple answer. I have existed long before your world knew war, before men wielded steel and chakra. I am the keeper of the unseen, the watcher in the dark."
Daichi scowled. "Another one of Tenka's freaks?"
The shadow's form twisted. "Tenka is a fool who seeks to wield what he cannot comprehend. I am not his servant."
Kai kept his sword raised. "Then what do you want?"
The shadow's gaze settled on Shin. "I am here for him."
The group tensed.
Shin met the shadow's eyeless stare. "Why?"
"Because you have seen the abyss. And the abyss has seen you."
A silence stretched between them.
Aiko's fingers tightened around her kunai. "If you're here to fight him, you'll have to go through us."
The shadow chuckled again. "Bravery. Admirable, yet pointless. I am not your enemy—nor your ally. I am simply… a witness."
Shin narrowed his eyes. "A witness to what?"
The temple trembled as the shadow extended a hand. The air grew dense with power, and the ruins around them shifted—the walls fading into a swirling void.
The past unfolded before them.
A battlefield stretched across the horizon, bodies strewn across the bloodied earth. Figures clad in robes of black and gold clashed against warriors wielding power beyond comprehension. Among them, a man stood at the center—a man whose presence sent a shudder through Shin's core.
Tenka.
But this was not the Tenka they knew.
This was before.
The cult leader stood atop a mountain of corpses, his Abyssal Eye burning with unholy power. He faced an opponent—a warrior wreathed in darkness, their very existence crackling with energy.
Shin's breath hitched. The warrior… looked like him.
No, not him. But someone like him.
The shadow spoke. "The abyss has touched many before you, Noragetsu. But only a few have truly mastered it. And fewer still have survived the trials that follow."
The battle unfolded before them—Tenka and the warrior clashing, their attacks shattering the very air. The warrior fought with unmatched skill, wielding the void as both weapon and shield.
But Tenka… changed.
His form twisted, the void consuming him. His strength multiplied, his power transcended the limits of mortality.
And in a single moment, the warrior fell.
The vision shattered.
The ruins returned.
Shin exhaled sharply, his hands clenched into fists.
The shadow watched him. "Do you understand now?"
Shin remained silent.
"This path is one of suffering, Noragetsu. Tenka will not stop. He will evolve. He will become more than what he is now. And if you are not prepared, you will fall like the one before you."
Shin lifted his gaze. "Then I won't fall."
The shadow chuckled. "Time will tell."
The darkness receded.
The ruins fell silent once more.
Kai exhaled. "What the hell was that?"
Rei shook his head. "A warning."
Aiko looked at Shin. "What do we do now?"
Shin's jaw tightened. The vision replayed in his mind—Tenka's transformation, the warrior's fall, the overwhelming power that lay beyond mortal reach.
He would not let history repeat itself.
"We find him," Shin said. "And we end this."
The storm raged outside as they stepped from the ruins, the weight of the abyss heavier than ever before.
