Chapter 117: Acceptance Letters (117)
The early spring breeze carried the scent of blooming flowers as Haruto and Aiko sat side by side on the rooftop of their high school. The soft hum of distant conversations from students below was barely noticeable, drowned out by the pounding of their hearts. The anticipation of the moment weighed heavily on them—today was the day their university acceptance letters would arrive.
Haruto clenched his hands into fists, his fingers slightly trembling. He had spent countless sleepless nights preparing for the entrance exams, and now, the results were finally within reach. His dream of studying astronomy in Tokyo hung in the balance.
Aiko, sitting beside him, was equally anxious. Ever since she was young, she had dreamed of attending a prestigious art school in Tokyo, immersing herself in colors and emotions, bringing life to her paintings. But dreams felt fragile, like they could shatter at any moment.
"I can't believe the letters are finally coming today," Aiko murmured, hugging her knees to her chest. Her voice wavered slightly, betraying her nerves.
Haruto took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, trying to steady himself. "Yeah… We've worked so hard for this. But still, it's terrifying."
The school bell rang, signaling the end of the day. The moment they had been dreading had arrived. Without a word, they both stood up, exchanging a glance that held a mixture of excitement and fear. Walking together toward the school gate, they saw a group of students eagerly checking their phones and exchanging congratulatory hugs or words of comfort.
As they neared Aiko's house, they saw the familiar sight of her mailbox. Her hands trembled as she reached out, pulling the stack of mail toward her. Her heart skipped a beat when she spotted a crisp white envelope with the emblem of her chosen art school.
Haruto watched her silently, his own nerves doubling at the sight. He clenched his fists, resisting the urge to grab his phone and check if his results had arrived digitally.
Aiko swallowed hard and turned to him. "Should I… open it now?"
Haruto nodded. "I'll wait for you."
With a deep breath, she carefully tore open the envelope and unfolded the letter. Her eyes darted across the words, and for a moment, her face was unreadable. Then, her lips parted, and she gasped.
"I got in," she whispered, as if saying it out loud would make it disappear. Then, a shaky laugh escaped her, her eyes glistening with tears. "I got in, Haruto!"
Haruto's heart swelled with pride, and without thinking, he pulled her into a tight embrace. "I knew you would! You deserve this, Aiko!"
She clung to him for a moment before pulling away, her expression softening. "Now it's your turn."
His stomach tightened. He pulled out his phone and refreshed his email inbox. The screen loaded slowly, each second stretching unbearably long. Then, he saw it—a new email from his chosen university.
Holding his breath, he tapped on it and began reading.
Aiko anxiously watched his face, trying to decipher his emotions. "Haruto?"
His lips parted slightly, his eyes scanning the letter once, then twice. His throat felt dry, and his hands trembled as he finally spoke.
"I got in," he whispered in disbelief.
Aiko gasped, covering her mouth. "You… You did?!"
Haruto looked up at her, and a grin broke across his face. "I did. I got in!"
The weight of his words finally sank in, and Aiko threw her arms around him, nearly knocking him back. "You did it! We did it! We're both going to Tokyo!"
Laughter and tears mixed as they stood in the golden light of the setting sun, holding onto each other, feeling the reality of their dreams taking shape. For so long, they had worried about what the future held, about whether they would be separated by different paths. But now, they knew—they would face the future together.
That evening, they sat on the swings at the nearby park, their acceptance letters in their hands. The cherry blossoms swayed gently above them, petals drifting down like tiny blessings.
"This feels unreal," Aiko murmured, staring up at the sky. "I thought I would be too scared to leave this town. But now that we're both going… it doesn't feel so scary anymore."
Haruto glanced at her, his expression thoughtful. "We're stepping into a new chapter, Aiko. There will be challenges, but as long as we have each other, we'll be okay."
She smiled, her fingers tightening around his. "Yeah. As long as we have each other."
The stars twinkled above them, as if celebrating their victory, as two dreamers sat side by side, ready to embrace the future together.
