Chapter 9: Gang War
---
The next morning, Kai Vale headed straight to Hell's Kitchen to visit Matt Murdock.
As soon as he stepped into the law office, Kai knew something was off. The air felt heavy, and Matt's usually calm demeanor seemed strained. Then Kai noticed the thick bandages wrapped around Matt's arm.
"What happened? Why are you hurt like that?" Kai asked, frowning.
"It's nothing," Matt replied casually, adjusting his sleeve. "Just caught myself on a railing last night. I'll be fine."
Kai's gaze lingered on the bandages. The wound looked too clean, too precise — more like a blade than a rusty railing.
'He was fighting last night.' The realization hit him. Considering Matt's identity as Daredevil, it didn't take much to guess what had really happened.
Matt's mind was still spinning. 'Why did those gangs go crazy last night?' Normally, he could operate unseen, but this time he'd been overwhelmed — outnumbered and outmaneuvered — and the long gash on his arm was the result.
Kai knew better than to push. Instead, he sat down, pretending to focus on his reason for visiting — how to legitimize his newfound cash.
But before he could ask, the news broadcast on a nearby TV stole his attention.
"...a large-scale gang fight erupted in Hell's Kitchen last night, leaving dozens dead. Authorities are urging gang leaders to cease violence and enter peace talks..."
Matt's fists clenched tightly as the report played. His frustration was obvious.
'He blames himself,' Kai thought. And suddenly, the pieces fit — 'This is my fault.'
Kai remembered how he'd panicked during his first attack, leaving behind a bloodbath. That chaos must have drawn too much attention, causing a ripple effect that forced Matt into a dangerous situation.
Now wasn't the time to ask about his cash. Any mention of it now would seem suspicious.
Instead, Kai shifted gears, asked a few basic questions about starting a company, and excused himself.
Before leaving, he turned back.
"Hey... don't push yourself too hard, Matt," Kai said quietly. "Rest up before you go back out there."
Matt blinked. "...Yeah. Thanks."
As Kai walked out, Matt's mind lingered on those final words. 'He knows.'
---
That night, Kai was just about to turn in when he heard a knock — not at his door, but at his window. He glanced outside just in time to see a shadow move toward the rooftop.
'Matt.'
Curious, Kai made his way upstairs.
When he reached the rooftop, there stood Daredevil, clad in dark red, standing near the ledge.
"You're not worried about falling off?" Kai joked, trying to lighten the mood.
Matt didn't smile. "How did you know?" His voice was sharp.
"Relax," Kai said, holding up his hands. "I know who you are, but I'm not gonna tell anyone. And I'm not judging you either. I actually... respect what you do."
Matt didn't relax. His hand drifted toward his baton, ready for a fight.
"Look," Kai continued, "I came to you because I need legal advice, not because I'm trying to mess with your business. I don't care what you do at night — just don't push yourself too hard with that injury."
Matt stayed silent, listening carefully. His senses locked onto Kai's heartbeat — steady and calm. No deception.
Finally, he exhaled and eased his stance. "Alright. I believe you."
Kai grinned. "Good. Now that's settled... I need your advice. I've got some cash to start a company, but let's just say it's... complicated. Any ideas?"
Matt nodded thoughtfully. "I know someone who can help with that, but I've got some... business to take care of tonight. Come back tomorrow."
"Business?" Kai asked. "Mind if I tag along?"
Matt shook his head. "No way. Too dangerous."
Kai smirked. "I think I'll be fine." With a flick of his hand, he opened a portal and appeared right beside Matt.
"See? I've got my own tricks. No one's catching me unless I *want* to get caught."
Matt's expression tightened, but after a moment's thought, he sighed. "Fine. But you stay back — and no getting fancy unless I say so."
---
That night, the two of them swept through Hell's Kitchen, hitting several gang hideouts. Kai didn't even need to use his offensive abilities — Matt's brutal precision handled the combat, and Kai's teleportation let him grab cash stashes with ease.
By the end of the night, they'd collected a significant haul.
"If you trust me," Matt said as they walked back, "I know someone who can help you transfer that cash into a clean account."
"That's exactly what I was hoping for," Kai grinned. He handed the money to Matt, then headed home for some well-earned sleep.
---
The next day, Kai reflected on the night's events. He'd improved his skills — his portal-cutting trick was deadly — but there was a glaring weakness he couldn't ignore.
'Guns.'
No matter how fast his portals were, a bullet could end him before he could react. His body wasn't enhanced like Matt's — one stray shot could be fatal.
'I need better defenses,' Kai thought.
But without enough reputation points to unlock new abilities from the system, he'd have to play it safe for now.
'Until then... I'll just have to stay sharp'.
