Chapter 69: Hat Bargain
The crowd's enthusiastic whispers covered the venue. The hat on display created an aura that was undeniably wicked and undeniably powerful. Even if for Hikari it wasn't as good as any of her current items, this coveted hat could serve a witchcraft player who made it to level 600 and beyond.
Why would Hikari auction of such a precious item to a world where such levels proved evasive? The answer was a simple one, really. She wanted to see what would happen and watch the sparks fly as several forces tried to acquire the hat. If her guess was correct, auctioning such an item would create an explosive outcome. One could call it irresponsible, but at the same time, Hikari hoped the forces of good and evil would be forced from the shadows.
The first one to take the bait was someone Hikari should have suspected. Ayase—the young witch next to her—flipped a sign up to the local attendant, hoping to start her bid.
"I see 5,000 gold coins!" The auctioneer shouted.
Hikari furrowed her brows at Ayase. "I had no idea you'd be interested in something like this. You could have told me. I have many items just like this one in my inventory. Actually, even better ones!"
"Of course I would want it," Ayase said, pointing at her own pointy hat. "I am still a witch after all."
"Well, you don't need to bid for this one. I have several of them in my inventory."
Ayase chuckled at the silly elven goddess. "So, you were the one who put this one up on display then?"
"Of course, I thought I already mentioned that?"
"With this admission, how could I possibly give up that hat to someone else now?"
"Hm," Trent nodded at the duo, "You two are definitely closer than before. My judgment was spot on as always."
"What are you blabbering about?" Hikari asked. "I still haven't forgotten the rat. And so what? You guessed my secret. Why have you become so bold now? Shouldn't you be wanting to grovel or something?"
"Hah, grovel, even if you are a goddess or an avatar, that doesn't change anything. How much will can you exert on the world? I was of the understanding that it's not much. Am I right?"
"How much are you willing to test your theory? Do you truly believe I have no power here?"
"If you do, then prove it. Strike the rat dead. What would happen if you did such an action, I wonder? Wouldn't you fear the retribution of our goddess?"
Hikari sighed and stood from her seat. "If you want to figure out the answer so badly, I can give it to you here and now." She pointed her staff towards Trent. "Don't worry, this will only hurt for a second."
"Wait! What are you…"
Before anyone could do anything to react, a bolt of white light shot from her staff, piercing through Trent's chest in an instant. Everyone stood in stunned silence.
Hikari bowed to the woman in charge of the bids, then she placed a finger to her lips. "Shh, all will be fixed soon enough."
Once more, she pointed the staff towards Trent, rather his corpse. A purple glow illuminated the staff's tip. The bells chimed and created a calming sound over the venue.
The people altogether wondered where the sound came from. It surrounded them from all directions like a surround sound. To each person it was a different serene experience.
To a man in the front row, it was the gentle voice of his daughter at home. To a woman in the upper row, it was the loving voice of her departed father, and to the witch Ayase, it was the soft voice of Hikari playing in her mind.
"[Revive]," Hikari said. The staff obeyed her command, pushing the purple aura into the man's body.
Trent's eyes shot open as the aura descended on him. His breath hitched, and he grasped at his heart in disbelief. The gaping hole that spelled his end was completely mended, and his life returned from a dark chasm. As his eyes traveled back towards his attacker, his body trembled. Hikari smiled at him and gripped her staff tight. "Do not presume that you have the upper hand. You are already on thin ice. I have already made a vow to myself that I would not let anyone—especially people like you—continue to do as they please. And you must know what mortals say about the promises of a goddess. If not, allow me to bear it upon your heart once more."
Trent shook his head rapidly, waving and flailing his arms around like a fool. "No! I understand it very clearly!"
Hikari nodded in satisfaction before crossing her arms and taking a seat. "Good, your Hope has not yet ran out. See to it that there are no more misunderstandings in the future. I am not bound by any rules your gods may or may not have set here."
The elven goddess turned to the wide-eyed and stunned Ayase. "What's wrong? Did I go too far?"
"Wh-what? No! That was amazing! I was planning to shut that guy up myself, but that was way cooler! You were like a cool anime protagonist just now!"
"Hey! Who's an anime protagonist! Besides...Look at the stage! You're losing your bid."
"...And it's sold for 100 million gold coins to number 42," the auctioneer finished.
"No!" Ayase shouted, reaching her hand out dramatically and desperately towards the stage. "I wanted that hat!"
Hikari sighed. "Like I said, I have much better gear anyway. Besides, it's not like we won't ever see that hat again. Who could even have that many gold coins at the ready in this city? Aren't we sitting in the booth of some of the wealthiest people already." Hikari looked at the rat who was trying and failing to hide his presence. "It seems like this guy's masters have decided to place a bid."
