Chapter 162: 162. Appointing Subordinates
When converted to modern currency, the amount would be nearly 200 million RMB.
Of course, compared to the great houses like the Starks of Winterfell, it's not much.
Even though the North is not particularly wealthy, the Stark family, with their history spanning thousands of years, likely has over 100,000 gold dragons in cash reserves.
And then there's the Lannisters, the richest house in Westeros, ruling the Westerlands.
For years, Tywin Lannister, the head of the family, has been lending his son-in-law, King Robert Baratheon, millions of gold dragons. Even after all that, the Lannisters still have vast wealth. The Westerlands are, after all, rich with gold mines.
Some even joke that Tywin Lannister spends his days counting gold!
The only house that can rival the Lannisters' wealth is House Tyrell of Highgarden in the Reach.
The Tyrells are immensely wealthy. If King Robert ever allowed Mace Tyrell, the head of House Tyrell, to join the Small Council as Master of Works (in charge of construction projects), the Tyrells would gladly lend him millions of gold dragons to spend.
But King Robert knows how influential and powerful the Tyrells are. He'd rather borrow from the Iron Bank of Braavos than let the Tyrells gain any foothold in politics.
This leaves the Tyrells constantly watching King's Landing, desperate for power but unable to get it.
Compared to houses like the Lannisters and Tyrells, Jason Liu's fortune is modest, similar to a small noble family with only a few centuries of history.
However, the Westeros market has great potential, and the money Jason Liu has made so far is just the beginning.
There's still a lot more to achieve.
Jason decided to focus on promoting his products, like four-wheeled carriages and solar-powered lighting, to make an even bigger mark on Westeros.
Lina informed him that the Starks had sent him an invitation to a harvest banquet. Jason planned to attend, using the occasion to formally meet the Northern lords and introduce his carriages and solar lighting systems.
The next day, Lina followed his orders and spread the word about hiring workers. This caused a stir in Market Town, with many townsfolk eager to send their children for the job.
The 20 positions were quickly filled.
Lina asked Jason how he planned to use these new recruits since the store didn't need that many people.
Jason looked at the group of young boys, their faces a mix of nervousness and curiosity. Nodding slightly, he told Barron, "Take them to get a proper bath first, give them clean clothes, and then have you and the other six teach them how to work with the solar lighting systems."
Barron, though surprised by the number of recruits, didn't question the decision. He replied respectfully, "Yes, my lord. I'll make sure they're trained to install solar lighting equipment."
Barron had spent the previous night practicing how to say "solar lighting" correctly. By now, he could say it fluently.
As Barron and the others led the boys to bathe, Jason turned to dicken, his bodyguard captain, and asked, "Has Jon returned from Winterfell yet?"
After two months of training his soldiers, Jason had finalized his appointments.
He promoted dk, a towering 17-year-old nearly 2 meters tall, to the position of captain of his bodyguard. With access to good food and training, dk had become even stronger. Just standing still, he exuded an intimidating presence.
Though dk was simple-minded and slow to react, his loyalty, strength, and honesty made him a perfect choice. Wearing stab-proof armor and wielding a sword, dk was a force to be reckoned with—even Jon, skilled in swordsmanship, couldn't defeat him.
Alongside dk, Jason appointed Kent, Rubin, and another boy, Chris, as part of his personal guard. Together, Jason now had a four-man bodyguard team: Sir dk, Sir Kent, Sir Rubin, and Chris.
As for his soldiers, Jon, Bud, McCann, and Marb were made captains, each responsible for leading 25 men in his 100-man army.
Hearing Jason's question about Jon, dicken smiled sheepishly and replied in his deep, gentle voice, "No, my lord. Jon hasn't returned yet."
Despite his intimidating size, dicken's slow and gentle demeanor often made him seem harmless, almost silly.
It was a strange contrast—someone so massive and strong, yet so mild in manner. This had led to him being teased by others in Market Town when he was younger.
His father, Old Rhode, often scolded him, claiming, "This big fool can't be my son! He's as stupid as an ox!"
But Jason saw dk's potential. With his size, strength, and stab-proof armor, dk was practically a walking tank. Jason was already planning to get him upgraded armor that covered his entire body and a modern riot helmet.
With such equipment, dk would be unstoppable. Even against someone like Gregor Clegane, known as "The Mountain," dk would stand a chance.
Although dicken wasn't as strong as The Mountain, his advanced protective gear would give him a significant advantage.
Jason couldn't help but imagine how satisfying it would be to see dicken, his personal "human tank," crushing arrogant knights and earning respect for Starfire City.
Having someone like dicken by his side would not only boost his reputation but also serve as a valuable asset in dangerous situations.
Jason was confident that when his title of Earl of Starfire City was officially recognized, there would be jealous nobles and knights trying to undermine him.
With dicken by his side, Jason was ready to face any challenge.
