Chapter 45:
Chapter 45: Shameless Person:
Lin Shengnan set down the pen and dialed Lin Shiyan’s number. “Second sister, are you free now? I want to talk to you.”
Lin Shiyan responded quickly, “It just so happens I want to talk to you too. Wait for me at the Four Seasons. I’ll be there in ten minutes.”
Lin Shengnan replied, “I’ve rented a place right next to our unit. I’ll send you the address. Let’s meet there in half an hour.”
There was a brief silence before Lin Shiyan asked, “Fourth sister, are you planning to cut ties with the family like Lin You?”
“Do you realize what kind of impact this would have on us?”
Lin Shengnan chuckled softly. “I’m not cutting ties. I’m just used to living alone and don’t feel suited for the life of a big family anymore.”
“Is it because of Lin You?”
Without hesitation, Lin Shengnan denied it. “No.”
“Then it must be because of Lin Tianyang,” Lin Shiyan pressed.
Sighing deeply, Lin Shengnan evaded the question. “Let’s talk about it when you come over.”
Ending the call, she left the door ajar. When Lin Shiyan arrived, she found her sister seated on the sofa, staring at a whiteboard covered with notes.
Silently stepping closer, Lin Shiyan’s eyes fell on the whiteboard. At the center of it were two large characters: Lin You.
Beneath it was a list:
Lin You ate Lan Lin’s poodle.
Lin You stole Lan Lin’s bracelet.
Lin You peeked at Lin Shiyan while she was showering.
Lin You replaced the watch Lin Xiaotong gave her future boyfriend with a live toad.
Lin You pushed Lin Tianyang into the swimming pool and nearly drowned him.
Lin You stole Lin Tianyang’s Patek Philippe watch.
Lin You sabotaged the cooperation between Lin Yuan and Dingcheng Group.
Lin You’s infant longevity lock was found in Lin Tianyang’s bathtub.
Lin You was present at the explosion site of Sihai Restaurant.
Lin Shiyan read the list with rising anger. “Fourth sister, Lin You is utterly insufferable! Do you think we’ve treated him poorly? He does these outrageous things just to gain favor. He even spied on me in the shower! Someone like him doesn’t deserve the surname Lin.”
Calmly, Lin Shengnan stood, walked to the whiteboard, and crossed out the first item. She then moved down, crossing out the fifth and seventh entries.
While marking the board, she spoke without turning. “Yet, this ‘dirty’ guy saved our lives the other day. Isn’t that ironic?”
“Don’t say Lin Tianyang wanted to save us too,” she added, “but lacked the ability. The truth is, he didn’t even have the intention.”
Turning to face her sister, Lin Shengnan continued firmly, “Yesterday, while investigating the explosion at Sihai Restaurant, I checked with the surrounding businesses. Lin Tianyang arrived on Xiangcheng Street an hour before the incident. He watched as we were humiliated, beaten, and nearly killed, yet did nothing.
“He only showed up when Lin You had resolved everything, hoping to play the hero and steal the spotlight. But he underestimated Lin You. He always has.”
Lin Shengnan’s voice grew colder. “Tianyang thinks he’s smarter and craftier than Lin You. But Lin You has always known exactly what he’s up to. He simply chose not to expose him out of consideration for family ties.
“When that goodwill was gone, it took Lin You just one decisive move to plunge him into despair.”
Lin Shiyan, taken aback, defended Lin Tianyang. “Fourth sister, how can you say that? Tianyang is cautious, yes, but that’s because he’s afraid of being abandoned by the family. He’s our younger brother, hardworking and well-intentioned. Isn’t it unfair to judge him so harshly over one incident?”
“Fair?” Lin Shengnan stepped closer, her tone icy. “Second sister, you’re a lawyer. You should understand fairness better than anyone.
“From the day Lin You joined our family to the day he left, we bought him exactly one set of clothes worth less than a hundred yuan. Meanwhile, Tianyang’s toys filled several rooms. Is that fair?
“Lin You’s monthly allowance was 300 yuan, and he didn’t even get breakfast at home. Tianyang’s was 50,000 yuan. Is that fair?
“Lin You walked to school every day while Lao Qin drove Tianyang to and from school in a car. Is that fair?
“Tianyang lived in a 200-square-meter room with full facilities and servants to clean up after him, while Lin You was stuck in a 15-square-meter basement. Is that fair?”
Lin Shiyan, visibly shaken, attempted a feeble defense. “It’s because Lin You had so many bad habits, and the family wanted to help him…”
Watching her sister struggle, Lin Shengnan felt a wave of bitterness. She thought about their eldest sister, Lan Lin, and their father, Lin Yuan—all of them so self-assured in their perceived righteousness.
After a long pause, she let out a weary sigh. “In truth, I’m no different from you or our parents. We’re all shameless. Self-righteous, aloof, and driven by our own biases.
“The saddest part is, I convinced myself I was fighting for truth and justice. But under the guise of doing good, I was just as selfish as the rest.”
Lin Shiyan was stunned, staring at her sister as if seeing a stranger.
For the first time, she realized how much Lin Shengnan resembled Lin You—not in demeanor but in their resolute determination.
The key difference was Lin You’s quiet endurance, his ability to see through things without pointing them out. In contrast, Lin Shengnan despised evil openly, her intensity uncompromising.
Both possessed an unyielding nature, a ferocity that, once unleashed, left no room for retreat. Perhaps it was a rare, dormant trait in the Lin family bloodline.
Lin Shiyan glanced at the crossed-out items on the board.
“What do the crosses mean?” she asked cautiously.
Lin Shengnan, her voice drained of emotion, replied, “What do you think? Are you, like our parents, choosing to bury your head in the sand? Or do you think using your brain is too much effort, so you’d rather not bother?”
