Chapter 43:
Chapter 43: Awesome:
After Lin You left, Mingtang moved out from behind his desk—revealing he was seated in a wheelchair. The man, despite his powerful presence, was disabled and had lost his legs. Sitting motionless for two minutes, his expression remained unreadable. The long-legged beauty beside him also stood silently, not moving a muscle.
Finally, Mingtang turned toward the screen behind him and spoke, “Mr. Qi, come out and talk.”
The rhythmic tapping of bamboo poles echoed, and a young blind man, impeccably dressed in a suit and leather shoes, emerged from behind the screen. Tall and well-groomed, with neat hair and a calm demeanor, he might have been strikingly handsome if not for his lifeless eyes.
Standing before Mingtang, the blind man, Qi Wushang, said nothing.
Mingtang broke the silence. “Tell me, Wu Shang, if I hadn’t lent him the money, what would he have done?”
Qi Wushang responded quietly, “You already know the answer.”
“But you can foresee the future,” Mingtang pressed.
Qi Wushang shook his head. “Not quite. I merely make judgments about the future based on observable clues.”
“Then share your judgment.”
“He lied.”
“Oh?”
“When he claimed it would take 0.3 seconds to reach you, he lied,” Qi Wushang said calmly. “It would only take him 0.1 seconds. The remaining 0.2 seconds were a buffer, prepared for me if I intervened. He also said there were four men behind the screen, but he knew there were five.”
“What does that mean?” Mingtang asked, his voice low.
“It means he wasn’t bluffing—he was ready to act.”
“But he’s just a high school student!” Mingtang’s right hand trembled slightly. “What level is he?”
“You cannot comprehend it, cannot describe it, and cannot provoke it,” Qi Wushang replied flatly.
Mingtang inhaled deeply. “Does [Weasel Way] have anyone who can handle someone of that level?”
Qi Wushang smiled faintly. “Mr. Ming, you’re joking. No one can handle someone like him. Only someone at his level could.”
“Then what should I do now?” Mingtang asked, frowning.
“Ensure his safety for the rest of your life.”
Understanding Qi Wushang’s words, Mingtang turned to the beauty beside him. “Qingyu, tell Tang Sen to come in.”
A few minutes later, Tang Sen entered the office.
Mingtang instructed him, “Go to [Eagle Way] and find two masters. Have them follow the person you brought earlier.”
Tang Sen raised an eyebrow. “Sir, are you planning to deal with him? If he’s at that level, anyone daring to provoke him would fail.”
Mingtang snapped, tapping his temple. “Use your brain! Do you think someone capable of leaving [Fox Way] unharmed needs protection? This is to show him we’re on his side, that we’ve helped him.”
…
After leaving the Golden Fox Building, Lin You removed the new denim jacket Zhang Xi had bought, wrapping it around his injured left hand. Finding a quiet corner, he used his right hand to straighten his broken finger. He then went to a fast-food restaurant, bought two dumplings, and used the string that tied them to splint his fingers.
Later, he visited a bank to check the black card balance, only to find it held 600,000 yuan instead of the promised million. Typical loan shark behavior—what they called a “dead loan.”
Still, 600,000 was sufficient. Lin You transferred the amount to his personal account and took a bus to No. 16 Middle School. He sat on the playground until the bell rang, then walked into the classroom to find Li Ruochen.
Seeing Lin You without his school uniform, Li Ruochen asked, “Are you going out?”
Lin You nodded. “I’m asking Teacher Yuan for a leave, about ten days. During that time, don’t leave the school. It’s safer that way. If you need anything, ask Zhang Xi to get it for you. Remember that.”
Her eyes turned red. “Then I’ll take leave too. Wherever you go, I’ll go.”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Lin You replied. “The college entrance exams are in a few months. Are you a rich second generation with endless fallback options in state enterprises? Your future matters. Remember, you’re going to be a great male doctor. Keep going, keep pushing.”
Chastised, Li Ruochen said no more.
Lin You headed to the teacher’s office to find Teacher Yuan but, unable to locate him, left the school. He then went to a small Internet café run by a young girl, topped up his Internet card with 2,000 yuan, and booked a private booth meant for couples. The booth had two computers.
Sitting down, Lin You remembered something from the future he had seen before his death—a simple game called Sheep’s Sheep that became wildly popular. In just a few months, it earned its creators tens of millions. Lin You decided to replicate the game but with a twist, renaming it Awesome.
Immersing himself in work, Lin You bought two boxes of instant noodles and some Laotan pickled cabbage (unsponsored, of course). The mention of Laotan reminded him of his childhood at the temple, where he and his siblings pickled vegetables by stomping on them with their feet, then pressing them with heavy stones. Once, a rumor about someone finding jade in their pickling stone inspired Lin You and his siblings to haul their own stone down the mountain, hoping for riches—only to be caught and punished.
The memory made Lin You chuckle as he focused on creating the game. First, he found an online artist to design the characters. Since the original game used sheep, he opted for cows instead.
Lin You wasn’t a gamer himself, but he understood one crucial truth: players don’t play games—games play them. The success of a game depended on its ability to exploit human nature, adding elements like competition, team pride, and the desire to show off.
With this insight, Lin You knew he had grasped the essence of the game. The rest was just technical work. Though he had never studied programming, his mathematical skills—consistently ranking first in his school and even the city—allowed him to pick it up quickly.
The life of a scholar is indeed tough! Lin You thought as he began coding, determined to turn his vision into reality.
