A Daily Life With My 3 Stepsisters

Chapter 8: Rumor Mill

Monday morning came too fast. After the mall trip, I'd spent Sunday hiding in my room, trying to recover from the whirlwind of my stepsisters and their relentless energy. I thought I'd earned a break—a normal day at school, maybe. But as soon as I stepped through the gates, I realized normal was off the table.

It started with the stares. More of them this time, sharper, like everyone knew something I didn't. Taro and Yuki ambushed me before I even reached my locker, their grins wide enough to split their faces.

"Dude," Taro said, clapping me on the shoulder, "you're famous now. Everyone's talking about your weekend."

"What?" I frowned, shoving my bag into my locker. "What are you talking about?"

"The mall," Yuki said, adjusting his glasses with a smirk. "Someone saw you with your stepsisters on Saturday. Word's out—you're living some kind of harem fantasy."

My stomach dropped. "That's not—It was just shopping!"

"Sure it was," Taro said, waggling his eyebrows. "Shopping with three hot girls who can't keep their hands off you. Totally innocent."

"They didn't—" I started, but then I remembered Mina clinging to me, Aiko's teasing, Reina's soft smiles. Okay, maybe it hadn't looked innocent. "Whatever. It's not a big deal."

"Tell that to the rumor mill," Yuki said, nodding toward a group of girls whispering nearby. "They're saying you're dating one of them—or all of them."

I groaned, slamming my locker shut. "Great. Just what I needed."

The morning only got worse. By second period, I caught snippets of conversations—"Kaito's got a harem," "Those new girls are all over him," "He's such a player"—and every time I walked into a room, heads turned. I kept my eyes down, pretending not to notice, but it was like walking through a minefield.

Lunch was the breaking point. I grabbed my tray and headed for my usual spot, hoping to eat in peace, when Mina materialized out of nowhere, dragging two of her "minions" behind her.

"Kaito!" she chirped, plopping down across from me. "You're eating with us today!"

"No, I'm not," I said, but her freshmen lackeys were already sitting, staring at me like I was some kind of exhibit.

"Too late," she said, stealing a fry from my plate. "Oh, did you hear? People think you're my boyfriend now."

"What?" I nearly choked on my water. "Who said that?"

"Everyone!" she giggled, leaning forward. "They saw us at the mall, and now they're all jealous. Isn't it hilarious?"

"No," I said, shoving my tray away. "It's not hilarious. It's a nightmare."

"Aw, don't be dramatic," she said, patting my hand. "It's fun! Right, guys?"

Her minions nodded like trained puppies, and I buried my face in my hands.

Aiko showed up next, sliding into the seat beside me with her usual smirk. "Heard the rumors, Kaito. You're a real ladies' man now."

"Shut up," I muttered, but she just laughed, her knee brushing mine under the table—again.

"Relax," she said, leaning closer. Her voice dropped, teasing. "If they think you're taken, maybe they'll leave you alone. Or maybe not—I hear some guys want to fight you now."

"Fight me?" I stared at her. "Why?"

"Jealousy," she said, shrugging. "You've got three girls hanging off you. They're pissed."

"Fantastic," I said, sarcasm dripping from every word.

Reina arrived last, her tray trembling slightly as she sat next to Mina. "Kaito-kun, are you okay? I heard… things."

"I'm fine," I lied, though my head was spinning. "Just ignore it. It'll blow over."

"I hope so," she said, her brows furrowing. "Some girls in my class were saying… mean stuff. About you. And us."

"Mean stuff?" I frowned. "Like what?"

She hesitated, glancing down at her food. "They think we're… I don't know, fighting over you or something. It's silly."

"Fighting over me?" I laughed, but it came out strained. "That's ridiculous."

"Is it?" Aiko said, smirking again. She propped her elbow on the table, resting her chin in her hand. "I mean, we could fight over you. Might be fun."

"Aiko, stop," Reina said, her cheeks pink. "You're making it worse."

"I'm just saying," Aiko teased, nudging me. "He's blushing again. Cute."

"I'm not blushing," I snapped, though my face felt like a furnace.

Mina cackled, clapping her hands. "This is the best! Kaito, you're so red!"

Lunch ended with me shoving food into my mouth just to avoid talking, while the three of them bickered and teased like it was a sport. The rumors didn't stop, though—by last period, I caught a guy glaring at me in the hall, his fists clenched like he actually wanted to start something.

After school, I waited by the gates, hoping to slip away before the girls found me. No luck. Mina bounded over first, her usual grin in place.

"Kaito! Ready to walk home?" she asked, linking her arm with mine.

"Not really," I said, but I didn't pull away. What was the point?

Aiko joined us, slinging her bag over her shoulder. "Heard some guy's calling you out tomorrow. Should I bring popcorn?"

"Don't encourage it," I said, rubbing my temples.

Reina caught up last, her steps hesitant. "Kaito-kun, I'm sorry about all this. I didn't think it'd get so… big."

"It's not your fault," I said, softening despite myself. "It's just… a mess."

She nodded, biting her lip. "Still. If you need to talk, I'm here."

"Thanks," I said, and for a second, her quiet sincerity cut through the chaos. Then Mina tugged my arm, Aiko smirked, and the moment was gone.

The walk home was loud—Mina chattering, Aiko poking fun, Reina trying to keep the peace. But as we reached the house, I couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning. Rumors, jealousy, fights—what next?

I collapsed onto the couch the second we got inside, staring at the ceiling. Day seven, and the world was closing in. My stepsisters weren't just a problem at home anymore—they were rewriting my whole life.

And the worst part? A tiny, stupid part of me was starting to like the attention.
