Chapter 11: Brain Activity
"Harry Shadowfang brought you in around yesterday afternoon. It's almost noon now, so you're probably out for around 24 hours. Are you sure you're okay? Your brain was showing incredible activity, even during this morning's rounds." Sheila Shadowbane placed a dainty hand upon Damien Bloodbane's forehead to check his temperature.
There was absolutely no trace of the usual disdain that people have when dealing with him.
Sheila Shadowbane was fully focused on her job as a nurse and did not discriminate who her patient was at all, even if the patient was a beyond useless E ranked trash.
For Damien Bloodbane who was expecting at least some sort of scorn, especially from a Shadowbane, her neutral reaction to him was rather refreshing.
In particular, her cool, soft hand upon his forehead. It felt remarkably good!
"He's probably like all the other perverts, pretending to be sick so that they can come here to be treated by us!" A loud voice filled with disdain suddenly rang out from behind Sheila Shadowfang.
"Exactly. A useless piece of trash lusting after beautiful swans like us. What a retard! What do you think you could achieve by doing this? You think we'll be impressed by the wounds you got while out on your "missions" and fall in love with you? Ridiculous!" Came another scathing voice.
Two beautiful young women around Damien Bloodbane's age appeared behind Sheila Shadowbane and looked at him with scornful eyes.
One had a head of beautiful black hair curled to the latest style, and had the bearing of a princess.
The girl on her side had similar bearings, and had a headful of golden curls which clearly proclaimed her identity as a scion of the powerful Lisky Clan, a clan specializing in the forging of Elemental Weapons.
Both of them were radiating the boundless energy of youth, dazzling everyone who looked at them.
But in Damien Bloodbane's eyes, their beauty paled before Sheila Shadownbane.
Maybe it was because she was the first person he saw after so many years of torture, or maybe she was truly that beautiful. But either way, the two girls' appearance at that moment did not stir his heart in the slightest.
"Sister Sheila, don't waste your time with this trash, let me bring you to the washroom to wash your hands after touching such a vile piece of flesh!" The first young woman with curly black hair whom Damien Bloodbane recognized as Hilda Redcloud said in a gentle voice.
"Yes, indeed. Let us leave this smelly tent and get some afternoon tea. We're only here as a formality to complete our 1st year final exam's practical component anyway, we do not need to actually serve these pieces of trash!" The second young woman, Vivienne Lisky nodded vigorously in agreement with Hilda Redcloud.
"I heard that Gan Brooks, the eldest son of the City Mayor of Highland City is here to test himself before he joins our War God College next month. My cousin told me that he is supremely handsome! Do you want to check him out?" Hilda Redcloud said in a giggly voice.
"Sister Hilda, you're so naughty! Gan Brooks is younger than us! Heehee!" Vivienne Lisky giggled back at her.
"Sisters, why don't you both go and have your tea first? I would like to check on the other patients before I break for lunch later." Sheila Shadowbane smiled at the other two girls gently.
Apparently, her charms were as irresistible to girls as it was to guys, and the other two beauties merely sighed at her in regret and left the medical tent after a few more words of pleasantries.
After they left, an atmosphere of calmness returned to the medical tent, and Sheila Shadowbane turned to look at Damien Bloodbane once more.
"Impressive." Damien Bloodbane said with a quiet smile.
"What is impressive? Your ability to pretend to be unconscious for 24 hours?" Sheila Shadowbane rolled her eyes slightly at him.
She didn't believe it was the case, of course, as she continued to study Damien Bloodbane's charts while frowning slightly to figure out exactly what happened to him.
"You are impressive." Damien Bloodbane said sincerely. "For being able to tolerate such shallow minded people for so long."
"I am dual majoring in Medicine and International Diplomacy." Sheila Shadowbane said sweetly. "Dealing with sick people is my specialty. Now don't move and let me measure your brain activity for abit."
Damien Bloodbane laughed at her words which indirectly agreed with his and got up from the bed. He ripped out the needles that were poked into his arm and smiled at Sheila Shadowbane who was frowning deeply at his actions.
"Hey. I want- I mean I need to measure your brain activity! I haven't determined the cause and effect of your fainting episode yet!" Sheila Shadowbane said indignantly. "It might happen to others and knowing how to deal with it would be critical in a large scale battle!"
"My condition would not happen to anybody else." Damien Bloodbane said wryly.
Of course it wouldn't. Who the hell would be as unlucky as him to get such a strange being in his body torturing him endlessly in the name of "training" him?
"Stop frowning, Sheila Shadowbane. You look prettier when you smile." Damien Bloodbane tapped on Sheila Shadowbane's scrunched up forehead lightly and left the tent in a surge of speed.
"Wha- Hey! Who gave you permission to touch my face?!" Sheila Shadowbane said in a flustered voice before quickly running out of the tent after Damien Bloodbane.
But alas, Damien Bloodbane was nowhere to be seen.
"Damn it. I am one year older than you, you little punk. Just wait till see you again. I will make sure I "get" your brain activity measurements!" Sheila Shadowbane muttered under her breath as she scowled at her surroundings.
Unknown to her, her beautiful face had turned slightly red and her heart rate had increased slightly, even as the slightest hint of a smile touched her lips.
